The pattern of callosal atrophy might be useful for the differentiation between frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) in advanced cases. However, it is unclear whether the pattern of callosal atrophy differs between patients with FTD and patients with AD in mild to moderate stages. Volumetric MR images were recorded from 48 probands (12 with FTD, 12 with late-onset AD, and 24 controls). All patients were in a mild or in a moderate stage. The corpus callosum was divided into five segments. A repeated-measures analysis of variance showed that there was no difference in the p

The authors performed imaging studies in two children with epilepsy and congenital facial hemangioma. The first patient had dysplastic pericallosal arteries and frontal polymicrogyria. In the second patient, dysplastic arteries and dysplastic cortex lined the interhemispheric fissure, the dysplastic cortex bridging across the midline, which resulted in holoprosencephaly. Abnormal cortical development may underlie epilepsy in children with facial hemangioma.

Striatal learning systems have been implicated in learning relationships between visual stimuli and outcomes. In the present study, the activity of the striatum during visual concept learning in humans was examined by using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Participants performed three concept-learning tasks and a baseline task. The participants were trained to criterion before fMRI scanning on two tasks, verbal and implicit. In the verbal task, classification could be performed on the basis of a simple verbal rule, but in the implicit task, there was no simple verbal rule. The nov

This work reports the use of diffusion tensor magnetic resonance tractography to visualize the three-dimensional (3D) structure of the major white matter fasciculi within living human brain. Specifically, we applied this technique to visualize in vivo (i) the superior longitudinal (arcuate) fasciculus, (ii) the inferior longitudinal fasciculus, (iii) the superior fronto-occipital (subcallosal) fasciculus, (iv) the inferior frontooccipital fasciculus, (v) the uncinate fasciculus, (vi) the cingulum, (vii) the anterior commissure, (viii) the corpus callosum, (ix) the internal capsule, and (x) the

A middle cerebral artery aneurysm, completely enclosed in a large frontotemporal anaplastic astrocytoma, is demonstrated in a 11-month-old girl admitted for intracranial hypertension. Clipping of the aneurysm along with radical resection was successfully performed. Five years later, follow-up neurological examination is normal, aneurysm occlusion and no evidence of tumor recurrence are demonstrated by angiogram and MRI. The association of brain tumor and aneurysm is discussed, and documented with the only two cases of a neoplasm surrounding on aneurysm reported in the literature.

A 52-year-old man with a history of cerebrovascular disease presented with a 3-year history of paroxysmal hemidystonia precipitated by assuming an upright position after sitting or lying down. MRA showed occlusion of the contralateral internal carotid artery (ICA) and near-total occlusion of the ipsilateral ICA. Subtraction single proton emission computed tomography demonstrated decreased perfusion in the contralateral frontoparietal cortex during the typical dystonic spell. We have coined the term "orthostatic paroxysmal dystonia" for this phenomenon.

The reliability of frontal and temporal fMRI activations for the determination of hemisphere language dominance was evaluated in comparison with intracarotid amytal testing (IAT). Twenty-two patients were studied by IAT (bilateral in 13, unilateral in 9 patients) and fMRI using a paradigm requiring semantic decisions. Global and regional (frontal and temporoparietal) lateralisation indices (LI) were calculated from the number of activated (r>0.4) voxels in both hemispheres. Frontolateral activations associated with the language task were seen in all patients, temporoparietal activations in 20

Positron emission tomography (PET) studies have indicated that the in vivo availability of dopamine D(2) -like receptors declines with age in the human brain. Most of the studies have been carried out with healthy male subjects, or with subject groups containing both sexes. The authors have recently demonstrated that the availability of D(2) -like receptors in the frontal cortex is higher in women than in men. The present study was aimed to further examine this phenomenon. Thirty-seven healthy women (age range 22-78 years) were examined with PET and [(11) C]FLB 457, a high-affinity tracer for

Exonic and intronic mutations in Tau cause neurodegenerative syndromes characterized by frontotemporal dementia and filamentous tau protein deposits. We describe a K369I missense mutation in exon 12 of Tau in a patient with a pathology typical of sporadic Pick's disease. The proband presented with severe personality changes, followed by loss of cognitive function. Detailed postmortem examination of the brain showed atrophy, which was most pronounced in the temporal lobes; and numerous tau-immunoreactive Pick bodies and Pick cells in the neocortex and the hippocampal formation, as well as in su

We have investigated the human neural systems for visual working memory using functional magnetic resonance imaging to distinguish sustained activity during memory delays from transient responses related to perceptual and motor operations. These studies have identified six distinct frontal regions that demonstrate sustained activity during memory delays. These regions could be distinguished from brain regions in extrastriate cortex that participate more in perception and from brain regions in medial and lateral frontal cortex that participate more in motor control. Moreover, the working memory

Functional imaging of human sleep has been performed with nuclear medicine methods, but MRI has been difficult to implement, in part because of the noise associated with echo-planar imaging as well as the difficulty in reading physiologic signals in the MRI environment. We describe a silent MR sequence that can record brain activation over many hours with simultaneous acquisition of an EEG. This shows activation of occipital cortex and deactivation of frontal cortex during REM sleep, in agreement with previous studies using other techniques. MRI-Sleep-REM sleep.

INTRODUCTION: In some types of degenerative dementia aphasia is the main disorder. In primary progressive aphasia. (PPA) atrophy is limited to the dominant peri-sylvan region. We present 18 cases of progressive aphasia of degenerative origin, with or without dementia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We describe the clinical and neuro-radiological findings in 3 patients with 'aphasic dementia and motor neuron disease (ADMND)', 7 with 'semantic dementia' (DS), and 4 with 'fronto-temporal dementia' with 'marked non-fluent aphasia' (AFTD). Criteria published in recent years were used.
RESULTS: In patients

Patients with Parkinson's disease have great difficulty in performing sequential and bimanual movements. We used H2(15)O PET to study the regional cerebral blood flow associated with performance of sequential finger movements made unimanually and bimanually in a group of Parkinson's disease patients and a group of control volunteers. In controls, sequential finger movements led to activation of the contralateral motor cortex and inferior parietal cortex (Brodmann area 40), the lateral premotor cortex and bilateral supplementary motor area. No prefrontal activation was seen. Sequential finger m

Free radicals are generated after head injury. These radicals rapidly react with polyunsaturated fatty acids in the cell membrane and cause membrane destruction. This process is called lipid peroxidation. Malondialdehyde (MDA) is one of the end products of lipid peroxidation, and it is a frequently used indicator of lipid peroxidation in biological tissues. Using a diffuse head injury animal model, we studied the time course of lipid peroxidation in different regions of injured rat brains. In the present study, the MDA levels were 36.7%, 41.8%, and 35.1% greater than sham at one hour after inj

Bilateral occipital calcifications associated with epilepsy and sometimes with celiac disease have been described previously. A boy with bilateral frontal and occipital diffuse calcifications accompanied by failure to thrive, nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, developmental delay and seizures, but without celiac disease is presented. Follow-up at 3 years of age disclosed neurodevelopmental delay, height and weight less than expected for age, and seizures controlled with carbamazepine. The uncommon association of these features and the early onset of symptoms is discussed. Although bilateral occip

The brain areas perfused by superselective intra-arterial (i.a.) chemotherapy were assessed using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with technetium-99m-hexamethyl-propyleneamine oxime (99mTc-HMPAO). A superselective catheter was introduced into the anterior, middle, or posterior cerebral artery of patients with malignant glioma for i.a. chemotherapy. 99mTc-HMPAO was subsequently injected via the same catheter used for chemotherapy, and a higher dose of 99mTc-HMPAO was injected intravenously to obtain adequate background brain images. Comparison of the SPECT images with magneti

Abnormalities in the auditory P300 event-related potential are one of the most robust findings in schizophrenia. To investigate the brain source(s) of this major functional abnormality, we combined P300 recordings with the use of a new generation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology to examine specific temporal lobe gray matter regions of interest in schizophrenics and normal controls. In schizophrenics, gray matter volume reductions in the left posterior superior temporal gyrus (STG), which includes Heschl's gyrus and the planum temporale, were highly and specifically associated wit

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and developmental dyslexia (DD) are two prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) that frequently co-occur, resulting in comorbidity (COM), which is associated with significant cognitive and behavioral difficulties. These disorders are characterized by considerable clinical and neurobiological heterogeneity. The functional connectivity (FC) patterns within each disorder may consist of both individual-shared and individual-specific components. Disentangling these patterns may provide more in-depth insights into the neural mechanism

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the incidence and independently associated variables of acute postoperative seizures (APOS) occurring in the first postoperative week after resective epilepsy surgery.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed clinical data from consecutive patients who underwent resective epilepsy surgery in a tertiary hospital. The clinical characteristics of patients with and without APOS were compared, and binary logistic regression was used to identify the independently associated variables of APOS.
RESULTS: Of the 1269 epilepsy surgeries (1261 patients) included in
