Colloquial descriptions of body image in older surgical patients.

Major surgery and associated experiences in critical care settings affect patients' perceptions of their body images. This paper discusses several colloquial terms related to body image used in interviews by elderly patients following major surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysm. The terms 'badly failed, and well mended', and 'out of sorts', and 'in tune with my body' recurred. These referred to perceptions related to body weight or strength and bodily competence and control, respectively. Patients had difficulty explaining these colloquial terms in other words, i.e. synonyms were not readily a

Predicting Instability Risk Following Hemiarthroplasty for Femoral Neck Hip Fractures in Geriatric Patients.

BACKGROUND: Although a rare complication, dislocation following hemiarthroplasty (HA) for a femoral neck hip fracture is associated with increased mortality, readmission, and possible revision surgery. To date many of the specific risk factors have been difficult to demonstrate. Patient factors, surgical factors, as well as morphological factors need to be assessed. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to elucidate the risk factors for dislocation of HA following femoral neck hip fractures in the geriatric population. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of 270 patients who had hip fr

Chronic cough, not asthma, is associated with depression in the elderly: a community-based population analysis in South Korea.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Depression and allergic diseases, including asthma, are frequently reported as comorbid conditions. However, their associations have been rarely examined in community-based elderly populations. METHODS: The analyses were performed using the baseline data set of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Health and Aging, which consists of 1,000 elderly participants (aged > 65 years) randomly recruited from an urban community. Depression was assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression. Major a

Lower limb muscle mass is associated with insulin resistance more than lower limb muscle strength in non-diabetic older adults.

AIM: We examined the association of muscle mass and muscle strength with insulin resistance, focusing on lower limb muscles. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study, and participants were registered in 2017 from the Tanno-Sobetsu Study, a population-based cohort study. After excluding individuals aged <64 years or with a history of diabetes mellitus, 272 non-diabetic older adults (116 men, 156 women) met the inclusion criteria. According to the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, the participants were divided into two groups; that is, the insulin resistance group (homeostasi

Evaluation of easily applicable pain measurement tools for the assessment of pain in demented patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Difficulties in communication and lack of suitable pain scales may lead to undertreatment of pain in cognitively impaired patients. We performed a study in this type of patients and evaluated the usefulness of four simple pain scales. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied 41 hospitalized elderly (76-95 years) who suffered from pain with an acute component. Cognitive function was assessed with the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and the degree of depression was assessed on the geriatric depression scale (GDS). Pain intensity was assessed at rest and after a pain-prov

Exploring Symptom Burden, Treatment Bother, Physical Function, and Quality of Life By Frailty Status in Patients with Multiple Myeloma

Introduction: Evidence-based guidelines for patients with Multiple Myeloma (MM) acknowledge the importance of frailty status when deciding on treatment. Frailty status may also influence patient outcomes throughout cancer treatment. Electronic Patient Reported Outcomes (ePROs) effectively capture the real-world patient experience as it relates to frailty status and health outcomes. Using ePROs, this study explored symptom burden, symptom bother, physical function, and quality of life across fit, intermediate, and frail patients with MM. Methods: All consenting adult patients with a MM diagnosi

Levamisole-Adulterated Cocaine-Associated Vasculopathy in a 73-Year-Old Woman: Diagnostic Challenges in Primary Care.

Levamisole, a common cocaine adulterant, can cause a distinctive skin disease combining non-inflammatory microvascular occlusion (vasculopathy) with inflammatory vessel-wall injury (vasculitis), marked by retiform purpura, skin necrosis, and atypical antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) patterns. The condition is frequently misdiagnosed as primary ANCA-associated vasculitis, exposing patients to unnecessary immunosuppression. This study aimed to describe a probable case of levamisole-associated vasculopathy in an older adult diagnosed in primary care and to highlight nonjudgmental substa

Sarcopenia, frailty syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea as elements of the aging phenotype in head and neck cancer and upper airway disorders: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia, frailty syndrome, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are increasingly recognized as age-related conditions with overlapping biological pathways. Their coexistence may be relevant in head and neck cancer and upper airway disorders, but direct evidence integrating OSA with head and neck cancer (HNC) and geriatric vulnerability remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to map the evidence on the relationships among sarcopenia, frailty, and OSA in the context of head and neck cancer and upper airway disorders, and to determine whether the available literature su
