To know whether the insulin resistance is improved by delaying carbohydrate absorption from the small intestine, we studied the effect of a disaccharidase inhibitor, AO-128, on insulin resistance of Wistar fatty rats. Rats were kept on standard laboratory chow with and without 10 ppm of AO-128 for 4 weeks, and then subjected to the glucose clamp. At the end of the 4-week treatment, plasma glucose level at 14:00 to 16:00 of AO-128 treated rats was 121 +/- 14 mg/100 ml (mean +/- S.D.), significantly lower than 226 +/- 72 mg/100 ml of the rats without AO-128. During clamp steady state under 20 mU

BACKGROUND: Diabetogenic loss of visual acuity is very rare in juvenile onset diabetics.
PATIENT: A 14-year-old adolescent with type-I diabetes mellitus since 7 years is reported. She experienced an episode of ketoacidotic diabetic coma after one year of very bad glycemic control. Even two weeks before onset of the diabetic coma her visual acuity decreased to 8/200 in both eyes. The perimetry revealed central and paracentral socotomas, the examination of the fundi showed only some microaneurysms and a normal optic disc. Electrophysiological results (normal ERG and EOG, pathologic pattern-VECP

An insulin-deficient 51-year-old man was put on dietary therapy and sulfonylurea (SU). Although there was good glycemic control for 2 years, the fasting blood glucose (FBG) level increased gradually over the subsequent 4-year period, and there was a marked increase in body weight. Secondary failure of SU therapy 20 years after the initial diagnosis led to insulin therapy. The FBG became unstable, and the C-peptide response disappeared. The patient died of nonketotic hyperosmolar coma and pneumonia at the age of 87. At autopsy, the pancreas showed marked atrophy (32 g) with extensive fatty dege

SGLT-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2i) are linked to a higher risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). However, it is still unclear whether the severity of SGLT-2i associated DKA is higher. This is a retrospective cohort study with patients admitted for DKA at a tertiary hospital (2013-2024). Patients were matched by propensity score for age, sex, diabetes duration, type, and ischemic heart disease. ICU admission risk and clinical severity were compared between SGLT-2i users and controls. The matched sample included 105 subjects (35 SGLT-2i users, 70 controls). The average age was 63.1 ± 15.4 years, and 40 (

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists are widely used for glycemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and are primarily indicated for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). GLP-1 receptor agonists have also been shown to have neuroprotective and antidepressant properties. Replicated evidence suggests that individuals with DM are significantly more likely to develop depression. Herein, we aim to investigate whether GLP-1 receptor agonists can be used prophylactically on patients with DM to lower the risk of incident depression. We conducted a systematic search for English-lan

Background and Objectives: Vitamin D is involved in pancreatic beta-cell function, insulin sensitivity, and inflammation. Further, elevation in branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) has been implicated in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) pathology. However, the relationship between vitamin D and BCAAs in T2DM remains unclear. The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between vitamin D and BCAAs in T2DM. Materials and Methods: In total, 230 participants (137 with T2DM and 93 healthy controls) were recruited in a cross-sectional study. Furthermore, an additional follow-up study was performed, i

Almond intake may be correlated with improvements in several cardiometabolic parameters, but its effects are controversial in the published literature, and it needs to be comprehensively summarized. We conducted a systematic search in several international electronic databases, including MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and ClinicalTrials.gov until April 2021 to identify randomized controlled trials that examined the effects of almond consumption on cardiometabolic risk factors, inflammatory markers, and liver enzymes. Data were pooled us

A better baseline renal function is associated with a better response to sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors in patients with type 2 diabetes. Low serum adiponectin is associated with visceral fat accumulation and hepatic steatosis. We investigated the relationship between baseline serum adiponectin and glycemic response to dapagliflozin in patients with type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In a randomized, active-controlled, open-label trial, 57 patients with type 2 diabetes and NAFLD were randomized to either the dapagliflozin (5 mg/d) group or the control gr

INTRODUCTION: Adult women with Turner syndrome (TS) have a high prevalence of diabetes and β-cell dysfunction that increases morbidity and mortality, but it is unknown if there is β-cell dysfunction present in youth with TS. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of β-cell dysfunction in youth with TS and the impact of traditional therapies on insulin sensitivity (SI) and insulin secretion.
METHODS: Cross-sectional, observational study recruited 60 girls with TS and 60 healthy controls (HC) matched on pubertal status. Each subject had a history, physical exam, and oral glucose tolerance

OBJECTIVE: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has been associated with an increased risk of metabolic disturbances and cardiovascular disease. Intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery (CIMT) represents a valid surrogate marker of early systemic atherosclerosis. This study aimed to investigate if CIMT is increased in PCOS patients compared to healthy controls and if there is an association with hormone and metabolic profiles.
METHODS: In this prospective cross-sectional study, past medical history, anthropometrical measurements and hormonal, lipidemic and glycemic parameters were obta

Glycogen hepatopathy (GH) is a rare complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus that leads to an abnormal accumulation of glycogen in the hepatocytes. The exact mechanism of GH remains unknown, but fluctuations in blood glucose and insulin levels play important roles in promoting glycogen accumulation. We report a case of a 16-year-old female diagnosed with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes mellitus with hepatomegaly and elevated liver enzymes. The patient experienced multiple admissions for diabetic ketoacidosis, and she also had celiac disease diagnosed 2 years previously based on serology and
