In this study we ascertained the proportion and absolute number of T, B and nul cell peripheral lymphocytes from Shigella dysenteriae type I patients and compared these results with those from age matched controls. Single blood samples were collected from 13 Bangladeshi children who complained of symptoms for one or more weeks. Patients were divided into two categories, with and without a leukaemoid response. The results from this study suggest that the large nul cell lymphocyte population seen in patients with Shigella dysentery, does contain a sub-population of cells that will respond in vitro to thymopoietin, a bovine thymic extract, by increased E-rosette formation. For the systematic study of the role of inflammation in the morbidity and mortality associated with bacterial meningitis, techniques for quantitation of the inflammatory reaction in the meninges of rabbits with experimental pneumococcal infection were developed. The brains of 19 infected animals were removed intact, and the area of inflammation in microscopic sections was quantitated by an electronic X-Y plotter connected to a computer. Exudate was maximal along the ventral surface of the brain at the level of the cerebellum. Inflammation increased progressively with time and peaked at 72 hr.

To reproduce the syndrome of overwhelming Escherichia coli bacteremia and shock after pelvic instrumentation, a model was developed by feeding E. coli via drinking water to coliform-free rabbits, injecting nitrogen mustard intravenously, and inserting a temperature probe into the rectum. BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that immune mediator concentrations in the bronchoalveolar fluid (BALF) are predictive of bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS) and demonstrate specific patterns of dysregulation, depending on the presence of acute cellular rejection, BOS, aspiration, and timing of lung transplantation.
