Evaluating the Implementation of Home-Based Sexual Health Care Among Men Who Have Sex with Men: Limburg4zero.

Home-based sexual health care (including self-sampling testing) could reduce barriers to clinic-based testing. This study systematically evaluated the implementation of home-based sexual health care ('Limburg4Zero') among men who have sex with men (MSM) in a mixed urban-rural region of the Netherlands. We systematically assessed implementation outcomes (contextual domains, population reached, effectiveness, adoption by health care providers (HCP), implementation fidelity, and maintenance) using the practical, robust implementation and sustainability model. We used a mixed-methods research desi

Retrospective Cohort Study of Financial Incentives for Sexually Transmitted Infection Testing and Treatment in an Outreach Population in Edmonton, Canada, 2018-2019.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STI) continues to increase worldwide. Patient incentives are one proposed intervention to increase STI testing and treatment. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study comparing incentivized versus routine care for STI outreach test and treat services between October 2018 and June 2019. Incentivized care included a $10 gift card for testing visits and an additional $10 gift card for results and/or treatment visits. Incentivized visits were offered to clients with a lack of housing, who were difficult to locate, or had a hi

Direct and Indirect Cost Savings From Sexually Transmitted Infection Testing, Treatment, and Counseling Among Foster Youth.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention programs can decrease the economic burden of STIs. Foster youth have higher rates of STIs compared with their peers; however, information on direct costs and indirect costs averted by STI testing, treatment, and counseling among foster youth is lacking. METHODS: This study used data from a comprehensive medical center for foster youth over a 3-year study period from July 2017 to June 2020. Direct and indirect costs averted by testing and treatment of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis, as well as HIV testing and counseling, were calc

Development of colorimetric sensor array for diagnosis of tuberculosis through detection of urinary volatile organic compounds.

BACKGROUND: Top priorities for tuberculosis control and elimination include a simple, low-cost screening test using sputum and a non-sputum-based test in patients that do not produce sputum. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of a colorimetric sensor array (CSA) test, for analysis of volatile organic compounds in urine, in the diagnosis of pulmonary TB. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Urine samples were collected from individuals suspected of having pulmonary TB in Western Kenya. Reference methods included MGIT culture and/or Xpert MTB/RIF nucleic acid amplification test on sputa. Fr

HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases among correctional inmates: transmission, burden, and an appropriate response.

Correctional inmates engage in drug-related and sexual risk behaviors, and the transmission of HIV, hepatitis, and sexually transmitted diseases occurs in correctional facilities. However, there is uncertainty about the extent of transmission, and hyperbolic descriptions of its extent may further stigmatize inmates and elicit punitive responses. Whether infection was acquired within or outside correctional facilities, the prevalence of HIV and other infectious diseases is much higher among inmates than among those in the general community, and the burden of disease among inmates and releasees

Predictive Factors of HIV-1 Drug Resistance and Its Distribution among Female Sex Workers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The predictive factors of HIV-1 drug resistance and its distribution are poorly documented in female sex workers (FSWs) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). However, the identification of predictive factors can lead to the development of improved and effective antiretroviral therapy (ART). The objective of the current study was to determine the predictive factors of HIV-1 drug resistance and its distribution based on FSWs in the studied regions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). HIV-positive FSWs who were diagnosed as part of the DRC Integrated Biological and Behavioral S

Tuberculosis in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Tuberculosis (TB) is the major opportunistic infection of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected persons worldwide. Human immunodeficiency virus infection is the most potent known risk factor for reactivation of latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, and TB disease appears to increase the rate of HIV progression. Pulmonary disease is seen in most patients, including a large proportion of those with extrapulmonary disease. Failure to suspect TB and to order the appropriate diagnostic tests is the most common reason for diagnostic delays. With advancing HIV infection, tuberculin skin

The Edinburgh cohort of HIV-positive drug users: pattern of cognitive impairment in relation to progression of disease.

To examine the neuropsychiatric effects of infection with HIV, 220 drug users (27 HIV negative, 193 HIV positive) completed tests evaluating premorbid intelligence, memory, non-verbal performance, information processing speed, and mood. When these measures were compared cross-sectionally by the severity of HIV illness, symptomatic patients (in CDC stage IV) were impaired on Trails B, two-choice decision time, delayed recall of the Wechsler Logical Memory Test and most components of the Auditory Verbal Learning Test. These findings imply reduced capacity for concentration, speed of thought and

Assessment of asymptomatic Leishmania infection in people living with HIV: a long-term follow-up study in Northeastern Brazil.

In people living with HIV (PLWH), surveillance for Leishmania infection is crucial for identify those at risk of developing visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Leishmania-HIV coinfection worsens patient outcomes and increases mortality and relapse rates. We conducted a prospective study (2017-2023) in Northeast Brazil to assess the long-term outcomes of asymptomatic Leishmania-HIV coinfected outpatients and Leishmania-negative PLWH. Participants were drawn from a cross-sectional study performed in 2017, which identified both Leishmania-HIV coinfected and Leishmania-negative PLWH. Epidemiological, cli

Screening for HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis on dried blood spots: A promising method to better reach hidden high-risk populations with self-collected sampling.

INTRODUCTION: Many people at high risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), e.g., men who have sex with men (MSM), are not optimally reached by current sexual health care systems with testing. To facilitate testing by home-based sampling or sampling in outreach setting we evaluated dried blood spots (DBS), a method for self-collected blood sampling for serological screening of HIV, hepatitis B (HBV) and syphilis. The aims of this study were to assess the acceptability and feasibility of self-collected DBS and to compare the test results for screening of HIV, HBV and syphilis from DBS wi
