BACKGROUND: Quantitative hepatitis B surface antigen (qHBsAg) is a routine marker for monitoring patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) or Delta (CHD). New commercially available assays require independent evaluation in clinical laboratories before being adopted for routine use. This study assessed the performance of the new Siemens Atellica IM Quantitative HBsAg (QHBs) assay in patients with CHB or CHD.
METHODS: Over a six-month period, all serum specimens from patients with CHB or CHD that were submitted to the laboratory for qHBsAg testing were prospectively analyzed using both the histor

Injectable long-acting cabotegravir plus rilpivirine (CAB+RPV LA) is an effective treatment option for people living with HIV. Unlike regimens containing tenofovir with lamivudine (3TC) or emtricitabine (FTC), it lacks therapeutic activity against the hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for non-immune individuals. We present a case of acute hepatitis B after switching to CAB+RPV LA in a previously vaccinated individual.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic liver inflammation leads to fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Serum alanine aminotransferase is the most widely used indicator of liver inflammatory injury, but it does not accurately reflect the extent of chronic liver inflammation. The role of exosomes in chronic liver inflammation and fibrosis has gained significant interest. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between serum exosome-derived miRNAs and chronic liver inflammation injury in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients with significant fibrosis, and to evaluate their potential c

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis are common viral infections. Given sexual, blood, and perinatal transmission routes, HIV and hepatitis can be expected to be transmitted in similar at-risk populations. Roughly 10%-20% of HIV-infected patients are expected to have hepatitis B virus (HBV) coinfection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This paper uses the data of 17 th round of HIV Sentinel Surveillance 2021 conducted in 5 prisons of Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. The 17 th round of HSS was implemented at 53 surveillance sites in prisons during 2020-21. Almost every distr

BACKGROUND: Mother-to-Child Transmission (MTCT) is a major route of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) transmission, accounting for a substantial proportion of new infections, particularly in highly endemic areas. The timely administration of combined immunoprophylaxis of Hepatitis B Immunoglobulin (HBIG) and hepatitis B vaccine to newborns exposed to hepatitis B virus is a crucial strategy for preventing MTCT. This study investigated the determinants of hepatitis B virus immunoprophylaxis utilization for newborns of HBV-seropositive mothers in the North-East region of Ghana.

Discontinuing antivirals in chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) 'e' antigen negative infection can enhance HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) loss but risks complications. We modelled the clinical impact of discontinuing antivirals in chronic HBV. We developed a Markov state model with Monte Carlo simulation of chronic HBV to compare continuation of antiviral therapy with 3 strategies of cessation and reinitiation for: (1) virologic relapse, (2) clinical relapse, or (3) hepatitis flare. We simulated the probability of virologic relapse as an exponential decay function from the time of antiviral cessation

Acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) is a severe condition with an incidence rate of 5.7 cases per 1,000 person-years. A primary trigger for ACLF is hepatitis B reactivation, which is responsible for 40-60% of cases. Co-infection with hepatitis A can also contribute to its occurrence. This study presents the case of a 58-year-old male patient with a history of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related cirrhosis, presenting with symptoms including confusion, disorientation, worsening jaundice, abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, malaise, muscle pain, and fever. Despite regular trea

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Fowl adenovirus (FAdV) is the etiological agent of inclusion body hepatitis (IBH) and hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome (HHS) in poultry. It is also detected in chickens with runting and stunting syndrome (RSS). FAdV has been detected worldwide, and genotypes 8a, 8b, and 11 have been identified in chickens with enteric problems in Brazil. Nevertheless, none of them have been isolated; therefore, these viruses propagate; thus, the viral behavior and pathogenicity are unknown in Brazil. This study aimed to isolate FAdV from the enteric content of chickens affected by RSS.

SCOPE: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a significant global health issue, impacting both low- and middle-income countries and industrialized nations. HEV genotypes 1 and 2, primarily transmitted through contaminated water, are endemic in low- and middle-income countries, whereas genotypes 3 and 4 are zoonotically transmitted in industrialized regions. Acute HEV infection poses severe risks, particularly to pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals, whereas chronic HEV infection leads to serious complications in those with pre-existing liver disease and transplant recipients. The development

INTRODUCTION: Acute hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is a self-limiting disease, but HEV superinfection in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection may lead to acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) and significantly increase short-term mortality. Diagnosis and comprehensive management of these patients remain in a dilemma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old man with chronic HBV infection for 8 years received entecavir due to abnormal liver function for 4 months. He was admitted for symptomatic hepatitis flare for nearly 2 weeks. Initial investigations did not reveal a cause othe

BACKGROUND: Occult hepatitis C infection (OCI) is characterized by the detection of hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA in hepatocytes and in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) without detection in serum. We aimed to evaluate OCI in drug and no drug users who achieved sustained virological response (SVR) after therapy with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) and with HCV spontaneous resolution.
METHODS: Twenty-four patients in the AVP group (who achieved a SVR after DAAs therapy), 13 in the NAVP group (with HCV spontaneous resolution) and 7 HCV-RNA positive patients (CPP, control positive group)

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) RNA and hepatitis B core-related antigen (HBcrAg), reflecting transcriptional activity of covalently closed circular DNA, are gaining traction as important markers to assess viral activity. Whether their expression differs under viral suppression by HIV co-infection status is unknown. Among adults with chronic HBV on antiviral therapy, we sought to determine if the expression of HBV markers (specialized and well-established) differs between HBV-HIV co-infection vs. HBV mono-infection. We compared HBV marker levels among 105 participants in the Hepatitis B Research Netwo

OBJECTIVES: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is still a major public health problem worldwide. Recently, evidence indicating that serum hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) quantification can be used for monitorization of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been increased. In this study, we evaluated HBsAg levels during the natural course of CHB and identified correlations between HBsAg, HBV DNA levels and liver histopathology.
METHODS: From 6 August 2016 to 7 June 2017, naive patients, who are ≥18 years old, fulfilled the criteria for the diagnosis of CHB and had a liver biopsy within a year befor

Diagnosis of HDV exposure is based on clinical assays of anti-hepatitis D antibody and current infection with hepatitis D RNA PCR. The role of hepatitis D antigen testing is not yet defined. RT-qPCR is the gold standard for measuring HDV RNA viral load, which is used to assess response to the treatment of HDV infection. Gaps in testing include poor sensitivity of antigen testing and quantitative HDV RNA accuracy can be affected by the genotypic variability of the virus and variation in laboratory techniques. There is also a limitation in HDV testing due to access, cost, and limited knowledge o

Hepatitis C virus infection is characterized by chronic liver inflammation and fibrogenesis, leading to end-stage liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma over the course of 20 to 30 years. It seems not only the chronicity of hepatitis C but also the presence of the virus in non-hepatic tissues creates a favorable environment for the potential development of pathogenic impacts on extrahepatic systems and organs. Numerous extra-hepatic manifestations have been reported in association with HCV infection, all of which can substantially affect morbidity, mortality, and quality of life. With the
