The paper is devoted to the surgical treatment of the children with dysplastic pre- and coxarthroses, namely to the reconstruction of the supraacetabular area of the hip joint by means of incomplete semicircular osteotomy, which has allowed to reduce the terms of the treatment, to exclude a further recurrence of the deformation and to interrupt the phenomena of arthrosis that are present. In all the cases of the 50 patients who had been operated (aged 3 to 14 years with the follow-up period up to 10 years) there were good anatomical and functional results. The average mark according to the CIT

Hip dysplasia is a major cause of osteoarthrosis in adults. Early aggressive osteotomy has the potential of preventing the development of arthritis, but carries with it significant risks. The problem is further complicated because the surgeon has no means of quantifying the dysplastic deformity or of predicting what a particular combination of osteotomies would do to correct the deformity. This study describes methods of quantifying hip-joint geometry in three dimensions based on computed tomography and magnetic resonance studies, and of simulating pelvic osteotomy to correct the deformities.

The treatment of tabetic arthropathy of the hip by prosthetic replacement has been recorded in the literature in 5 cases, of which only 4 were followed up. The authors present 4 more cases in which follow-up showed that the operation was definitely contraindicated in this condition. All the cases developed recurrent subluxation and/or loosening of the prosthesis.

The early stages of degenerative joint disease were investigated in coxofemoral joints from dogs with a hereditary predisposition to hip dysplasia. Alterations observed included mild nonsuppurative synovitis, increased volume of both synovial fluid and the ligamentum teres, and focal degenerative articular cartilage lesions. On radiologic examination, subluxation of the femoral head was seen, but only in the most severely affected joints. Synovial inflammation with increased synovial fluid and ligament volumes were indicators of early degenerative joint disease in dogs. These changes seemed to

BACKGROUND: The results of total hip arthroplasty (THA) with use of Delta ceramic articulation were successful at medium term follow-up. The use of this newest ceramic has markedly reduced the incidence of ceramic head fractures, but not the incidence of ceramic liner fractures. We tested a hypothesis that the ceramic fractures are prevented by use of a metal shell with 18° inner taper angle and a stem design with a reduced neck geometry.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective multicenter study of cementless THA with use of 32/36-mm Delta ceramic bearing, Exceed ABT metal shell and Taperloc stem

AIMS: Displaced, comminuted acetabular fractures in the elderly are increasingly common, but there is no consensus on whether they should be treated non-surgically, surgically with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), or with acute total hip arthroplasty (THA). A combination of ORIF and acute THA, an approach called 'combined hip procedure' (CHP), has been advocated and our aim was to compare the outcome after CHP or ORIF alone.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 27 patients with similar acetabular fractures (severe acetabular impaction with or without concomitant femoral head injury) w

PURPOSE: Highly cross-linked polyethylene has been introduced to decrease osteolysis secondary to polyethylene wear debris generation. However, few long-term data on revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) using highly cross-linked polyethylene liners are available. The objective of this study was to determine long-term outcomes of a highly cross-linked polyethylene liner in revision THA.
MATERIALS & METHODS: We evaluated 63 revision THAs performed in 63 patients using a highly cross-linked polyethylene liner between April 2000 and February 2005. Of these, nine died and four were lost to follow

BACKGROUND: Open and arthroscopic approaches have been described to address femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). Despite good outcomes, there is a subset of patients who subsequently require total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, there is a paucity of data on the outcomes of THA after surgery for FAI. The purpose of this study was to determine whether clinical outcomes of THA are affected by prior open or arthroscopic treatment of FAI.
METHODS: This case-matched retrospective review included 23 patients (24 hips) that underwent THA after previous surgery for FAI (14 arthroscopic and 10 open) a

Dega acetabuloplasty at the time of open reduction is effective in improving the acetabular coverage of the femoral head, hence improving the stability of reduction and preventing possible surgery in the future for residual acetabular dysplasia in older children with Tönnis grade 3 and 4 developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). The aim of this study was to assess the radiological results of open reduction combined with Dega osteotomy in DDH. Twenty-two children's 26 hips were operated on at a mean age of 38±20.4 SD months and followed up for an average of 42 (range 24-108) months. Thirteen hi

BACKGROUND: The Stryker Anatomique Benoist Girard (ABG) hip implant system was a commonly used cementless prosthesis in the early 2000s, which fell from favour after several studies emerged implicating the prosthesis in high rates of revision. This retrospective, single-surgeon clinical study examines the fracture rate, revision rate and reasons for revision in 500 consecutive ABG II primary total conventional hip replacements.
METHODS: Follow-up was conducted by audit of patient notes, patient mailout survey, patient phone contact and audit of the Australian National Joint Replacement Regist

BACKGROUND: The effect of body mass index (BMI) on the outcome of total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to examine whether revision rate and postoperative outcomes following THA were influenced by BMI.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 714 patients (751 hips) who underwent primary THA in our department between March 1991 and April 2006. They were followed prospectively for 5-20 years with 24 deaths (24 hips) and 33 losses (34 hips). Patients were separated into three groups based on BMI: underweight, normal and obese groups. A surv

AIM: The purpose of this study was to survey and to evaluate the first clinical and radiological results with the cementless ZMR taper hip prosthesis.
METHOD: The modular distal-tapered stem was designed with a roughened titanium surface and sharp splines to achieve secure distal fixation and rotational stability. 90 ZMR taper hip prostheses were implanted between October 1999 and July 2002. Out of these, 4 interventions were primary and 86 were revision procedures. In 43 cases a complete hip prosthesis revision and in 43 cases a stem revision was necessary. The mean age of the 90 patients (4

AIMS: Severe acetabular bone loss and pelvic discontinuity (PD) present particular challenges in revision total hip arthroplasty. To deal with such complex situations, cup-cage reconstruction has emerged as an option for treating this situation. We aimed to examine our success in using this technique for these anatomical problems.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We undertook a retrospective, single-centre series of 35 hips in 34 patients (seven male, 27 female) treated with a cup-cage construct using a trabecular metal shell in conjunction with a titanium cage, for severe acetabular bone loss between 2

BACKGROUND: Dislocation remains one of the leading causes for revision following total hip arthroplasty (THA). With the advent of robotic technology allowing more personalized implant positioning, there is the potential to improve stability. The purpose of this study was to evaluate personalized THA postoperative risk of impingement by simulating 12 dynamic activities of daily living (ADLs) with different spinopelvic parameters.
METHODS: A full-body skeletal computer model was used to estimate hip kinematics for 12 ADLs from marker-based motion capture data: walking, stair climbing, stair des

AIMS: Adverse spinal motion or balance (spine mobility) and adverse pelvic mobility, in combination, are often referred to as adverse spinopelvic mobility (SPM). A stiff lumbar spine, large posterior standing pelvic tilt, and severe sagittal spinal deformity have been identified as risk factors for increased hip instability. Adverse SPM can create functional malposition of the acetabular components and hence is an instability risk. Adverse pelvic mobility is often, but not always, associated with abnormal spinal motion parameters. Dislocation rates for dual-mobility articulations (DMAs) have b

BACKGROUND: The incidence of fractures around the femoral prosthesis among patients undergoing hip arthroplasty is increasing and has become the third leading cause of hip revision. While numerous methods for the surgical treatment of periprosthetic femoral fractures (PFFs) have been proposed, only few reports have examined the long-term efficacy of surgical treatment. This study aims to examine the mid-and long-term efficacy of surgical treatment among patients with Vancouver B2 and B3 PFFs.
METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated the surgical outcomes of patients with Vancouver B2 and B

Joint dislocation after total knee arthroplasty is a rare complication. It is described as the result of ligamentous instability. Here we report the case of an 82-year-old women who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for advanced primary grade III gonarthrosis. At 3 post-operative months the joint was stable and painless, with radiographic evidence of good TKA alignment and integration. At 4 months the patient suffered injury to the ankle involving a bimalleolar fracture and damage to knee soft tissues. The fracture was surgically treated. Subsequently, dorsal tibial dislocation w

Disassembly of bipolar cups with a self-centering system occurred in six patients (seven hips; five women, one man) and the cause of the failure was evaluated. The mean age of the patients at the time of arthroplasty was 49.7 years (range, 27-85 years), and mean weight was 48.4 kg (range, 37-65 kg). The mean time to failure was 7.5 years (range, 4.8-9.2 years). Before failure, all implants functioned well and none of the patients had sustained trauma. Retrieval study showed that the cause of failure of the locking mechanism with a self-centering system was severe polyethylene abrasion at the r
