BACKGROUND: The third generation of bisphosphonates is clinically in use for patients of osteoporosis or malignancy-linked hypercalcemia. The agents can also produce anti-tumor effects on bone metastasis of several types of tumors. We recently found that one of the agents achieved cytotoxicity to mesothelioma in vitro and in an orthotopic animal model. Mesothelioma is resistant to a number of chemotherapeutic agents, and suppression of local tumor growth is beneficial to the patients since metastasis to extra-thoracic organs is relatively infrequent until a late stage.

AIM: The levels of serum phosphorus (P) are low or low-normal in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), and there is an inverse relationship between the levels of parathormone (PTH) and P. However, when considering the diagnostic and surgical indication criteria of PHPT, serum P levels are generally ignored. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the association of serum P levels with the clinical outcomes of PHPT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective evaluation was made of the data of 424 consecutive patients (370 females, 54 males) with PHPT who presented at our centre.

In recent years, several series have documented the feasibility of endoscopic approaches for parathyroid diseases. We performed a retrospective study to evaluate the results of endoscopic parathyroidectomy (EP) in the management of our patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). The possible hormonal interactions of parathormone and extracellular calcium level with other endocrine systems were studied. Primary hyperparathyroidism was used first as a clinical model, in which hypercalcemia and normocalcemia occurs before and after surgery, respectively. PURPOSE: This study is an analysis of frequency and relationship regarding two undifferentiated carcinoma of nasopharyngeal type (UCNT)-associated paraneoplastic syndromes (PNS): leukemoid reaction (LR) and fever of unknown origin (FUO) with bone marrow invasion (BMI) and metastatic pattern.
