Digital imaging in the assessment of facial deformity.

A combination of digital imaging and conventional radiographic techniques has been used to obtain a life-size composite image of the facial soft tissue profile, the skull, and the teeth, anatomically superimposed on each other. The system overcomes major problems associated with assessment of facial deformity such as magnification, the exposure of photographs and radiographs from different positions, radiographs with overexposed soft tissue profiles, lengthy procedures in photographic studios, and, in addition, enables a degree of partial automation in the management of patients.

Usefulness of per-rectal portal scintigraphy with Tc-99m pertechnetate for galactosemia in infants.

Galactosemia discovered by newborn screening is rarely caused by enzyme deficiency. It has recently been reported that among patients without enzyme deficiency portosystemic shunting may be a cause of galactosemia in some patients. We did per-rectal portal scintigraphy in patients with such galactosemia detected during screening of newborns to examine the usefulness of this method for the diagnosis of portosystemic shunts via the inferior mesenteric vein. The subjects were eight neonates with galactosemia without enzyme deficiency detected during screening. A solution containing technetium-99m

Sexual dimorphism of the developing human brain.

1. Sexual dimorphism of human brain anatomy has not been well-studied between 4 and 18 years of age, a time of emerging sex differences in behavior and the sexually specific hormonal changes of adrenarche (the predominantly androgenic augmentation of adrenal cortex function occurring at approximately age 8) and puberty. 2. To assess sex differences in brain structures during this developmental period volumes of the cerebrum, lateral ventricles, caudate, putamen, globus pallidus temporal lobe, amygdala, and hippocampus, and midsagittal area measurements of the corpus callosum were quantified fr

Upper airway and soft tissue structural changes induced by CPAP in normal subjects.

Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the treatment of choice for adults with obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP is known to increase upper airway size; however, the direct effects of CPAP on soft tissue structures surrounding the upper airway are less well understood. Magnetic resonance imaging was used to study the effect of incremental levels (0, 5, 10, and 15 cm H2O) of CPAP on the upper airway and surrounding soft tissue structures in 10 normal subjects. Progressive increases in CPAP resulted in the following major findings: (1) airway volume and airway area (measured at several

[Dacryocystography in digital subtraction technique].

The authors emphasize the usefulness of dacryography to approach patients affected by epiphora. Digital dacryocystography had improved the anatomic and functional assessment of lacrimal apparatus. The methodology allowed in all patients an accurate visualization of the lacrimal system and the identification, in twenty cases, of pathological causes of epiphora. One patient was examined after dacryocystorinostomy. Digital dacryocystography is a very valuable technique for better contrast resolution, the subtraction of images, and continuous acquisition.

High-resolution T2-weighted MR imaging of the inner ear using a long echo-train-length 3D fast spin-echo sequence.

The purpose of this study was to assess the value of a long echo-train-length 3D fast spin-echo (3D-FSE) sequence in visualizing the inner ear structures. Ten normal ears and 50 patient ears were imaged on a 1.5T MR unit using a head coil. Axial high-resolution T2-weighted images of the inner ear and the internal auditory canal (IAC) were obtained in 15 min. In normal ears the reliability of the visualization for the inner ear structures was evaluated on original images and the targeted maximum intensity projection (MIP) images of the labyrinth. In ten normal ears, 3D surface display (3D) imag

[Traumatic lesions of the occipitocervical transition].

The availability of better and quicker resuscitation means that more patients with occipitocervical injuries survive. In view of the complex anatomy and functional capabilities of the upper part of the spine it makes sense to discuss injuries to this part separately from any to the lower cervical and thoracolumbar vertebral column. Computerized tomography with additional multiplanar reconstructions, digital radiography and magnetic resonance imaging early in the diagnostic workup improves the likelihood of a quick and satisfactory diagnosis. Our classification of injuries should enable the rad

Value of T1 and T2 relaxation times from echoplanar MR imaging in the characterization of focal hepatic lesions.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the value of echoplanar imaging in characterizing focal hepatic lesions on the basis of image-derived T1 and T2 relaxation times. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Forty-six proven hepatic lesions were analyzed: 24 solid (21 metastases, three primary liver tumors) and 22 nonsolid (11 hemangiomas and 11 cysts). Mean lesion size (maximal length) was 4.0 (+/- 3.2) cm, and 16 of 46 lesions were less than 2.0 cm. A commercially available 1.5-T echoplanar-equipped MR scanner was used to obtain fat-suppressed, single-excitation (TR essentially infinite) axia

A Lightweight Diabetic Retinopathy Detection Model Using a Deep-Learning Technique.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a severe complication of diabetes. It affects a large portion of the population of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Existing systems assist clinicians in treating DR patients. However, these systems entail significantly high computational costs. In addition, dataset imbalances may lead existing DR detection systems to produce false positive outcomes. Therefore, the author intended to develop a lightweight deep-learning (DL)-based DR-severity grading system that could be used with limited computational resources. The proposed model followed an image pre-processing appro

Pilot Study for Validation of Stereophotogrammetric and Mobile LiDAR Facial Scanning Against Vernier Caliper Measurements.

Facial scanning devices are widely used in dentistry, but their accuracy needs improvement. This study developed a portable face scanning application (named Face Rebuilder) for iPhone/iPad and compared its accuracy to that of a commercially available handheld 3-dimensional (3D) facial scanner based on stereophotogrammetry (DS-FSCAN, Hangzhou, China). It has not been commercially released. Twenty-two volunteers were recruited. Eighteen markers were affixed to each volunteer's face, and the accuracy of the facial scanning systems was evaluated by measuring the distances between these markers. Di

Longitudinal analysis of hippocampal subfield atrophy and network centrality associated with cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease progression.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by structural degeneration of the hippocampus. Previous studies have demonstrated that specific hippocampal subfields, such as the cornu ammonis (CA)1 and the subiculum, are susceptible to AD-related atrophy. However, most previous studies have focused on cross-sectional volumetric changes without investigating the interrelationships between subfields or their network-level functions throughout the disease progression. PURPOSE: To examine the longitudinal volumetric changes in the hippocampal subfie

Intrinsic network static and dynamic functional connectivity associated with induced affect.

The examination of the neural mechanisms of affect has shifted from a functional localization approach towards a distributed network neuroscience approach. The present study examined the topology of brain networks relevant to affective processing [i.e. the salience (SN), default mode (DMN), ventral attention (VAN), dorsal attention (DAN), and frontoparietal (FPN) networks] during a novel fMRI-based affect-induction task in which participants (N = 73) mentally visualized neutral, positive, and negative self-nominated acquaintances. We used graph-theory metrics to compute the static (i.e. mean)

Evaluation of signal enhancement techniques for motion correction for high temporal resolution functional PET.

Functional Positron Emission Tomography (fPET) data offers novel insights into brain energy demands and molecular connectivity. Recent advances in improving temporal resolutions for this imaging technique have opened up new research possibilities. However, lower signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) inherent to short PET frames bring into question whether current realignment approaches still provide appropriate motion correction or whether additional processing steps might be required to improve correction outcomes. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a standard motion correction procedure

Neural bias to social feedback moderates link between childhood abuse and subsequent harsh parenting.

Childhood abuse is often transmitted intergenerationally, leaving many families trapped in cycles of abuse. Because child abuse is transmitted through social interactions, developing effective intervention targets to disrupt these cycles may require understanding the mechanisms that support processing social feedback. This study examines whether neural biases in processing positive or negative social feedback moderate the link between history of childhood abuse and current expression of harsh parenting. Using fMRI and well-matched social and monetary feedback tasks, we studied female caregiver

Bridging TG-116 and TG-232: A retrospective multi-vendor evaluation of deviation index re-centering and process control in digital radiography.

BACKGROUND: The deviation index (DI) is a vendor-neutral indicator of detector exposure relative to the configured target exposure index (TEI). Because TEI is a protocol value rather than a calibrated physical quantity, poorly aligned TEI settings can create systematic DI offsets, obscure protocol problems, and prevent meaningful statistical process control. OBJECTIVE: This retrospective multi-vendor study evaluated whether routine DICOM metadata can identify biased DI distributions, separate fixed TEI-setting offsets from protocol-adherence variation, estimate candidate TEI updates, and supp

NucVerse3D: generalizable 3D nuclear instance segmentation across heterogeneous microscopy modalities.

Accurate three-dimensional (3D) nuclear instance segmentation is a prerequisite for quantitative phenotyping in volumetric microscopy, yet remains challenging in densely packed tissues, irregular nuclear morphologies, and across heterogeneous imaging modalities. Here we present NucVerse3D, a deep-learning framework for generalized 3D nuclei instance segmentation that combines a residual attention 3D U-Net architecture with a reversible gradient-field representation for robust centroid-aware instance reconstruction. NucVerse3D is trained end to end in 3D using modality-agnostic preprocessing an

A pipeline for quantifying cell damage in whole-slide fluorescence images of skeletal muscle.

Quantitative fluorescence imaging of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue is often limited by intensity heterogeneity, endogenous autofluorescence, and fixation-induced artifacts. Together, these factors reduce analytic accuracy and reproducibility. In murine skeletal muscle, dyes such as Procion Yellow (ProY) are used to identify membrane-compromised cells following injury; however, overlapping autofluorescence and uneven staining hinder reliable quantification. Existing segmentation workflows, including ImageJ-based approaches, are sensitive to these variations, and standard prepro

Deep Learning-Based Reconstruction Improves Image Quality in Canine Cranial Abdominal MRI: A Prospective Pilot Study.

The application of deep learning-based reconstruction (DLR) to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been recently introduced in human and veterinary medicine to improve image quality without prolonging acquisition time. We hypothesized that cranial abdominal MRI with DLR would have superior image quality than conventional MRI. This prospective comparative pilot study aimed to compare cranial abdominal MR image quality with versus without DLR application in dogs. Transverse T2-weighted and T1-weighted images with and without contrast enhancement of the cranial abdomen region were performed in 1

Tractographic description of the course of cortico-facial fibers in healthy humans: evidence for a dorsal pathway in the brainstem.

The precise anatomical course of the human corticofacial tract (CFT) in the brainstem is debated. Classical anatomy indicates that CFT trajectory overlaps with the corticospinal tract in the ventral brainstem, but clinical evidence suggests the co-existence of a dorsal paralemniscal pathway. This study aims to delineate the CFT trajectory in vivo by means of diffusion-MR tractography in a population of healthy humans and to compare it with the anatomy of individual brainstem lesions known to cause central facial palsy. We applied multi-shell diffusion imaging with constrained spherical deconvo
