Predictive Factors for the Outcome of Surgical Treatment of Lumbar Spondylolysis in Young Sporting Individuals.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective consecutive case series. OBJECTIVES: Only few sporting individuals with symptomatic lumbar pars injuries require surgical repair and it is often difficult to predict the outcome following surgery. The factors that predict the outcome after direct repair of lumbar pars defect was evaluated clinically and statistically. The preoperative background variables both subjective and objective as well as radiological evaluation were used in a multiple regression model to find the strong predictors of postoperative outcome as measured by VAS (visual analogue scores), ODI (Os

Acculturation and other risk factors of depressive disorders in individuals with Turkish migration backgrounds.

BACKGROUND: Acculturation is a long-term, multi-dimensional process occurring when subjects of different cultures stay in continuous contact. Previous studies have suggested that elevated rates of depression among different migrant groups might be due to patterns of acculturation and migration related risk factors. This paper focused on prevalence rates of depressive disorders and related risk factors among individuals with Turkish migration backgrounds. METHODS: A population-based sample of 662 individuals with Turkish migration backgrounds were interviewed by bilingual interviewers using a

Effort and neuropsychological performance in HIV-infected individuals on stable combination antiretroviral therapy.

The expression of cognitive symptoms associated with HIV varies over time and across individuals. This pattern may reflect transient contextual factors, including the degree of effort exerted by individuals undergoing cognitive testing. The present study examined whether effort corresponds to the expression of persistent HIV-related cognitive impairment among individuals receiving combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). HIV+ individuals (n = 111) averaged 48.2 (14.9) years of age and 13.0 (2.7) years of education and HIV- individuals (n = 92) averaged 34.9 (17.2) years of age and 13.5 (1.9)

Direct-acting Antivirals for HIV/HCV Co-infected Individuals: As Good as it Gets?

Although HIV/HCV co-infected individuals were historically considered a "difficult to treat" population in the era of Interferon (IFN)-based anti-HCV treatment, the introduction of directacting antivirals, characterized by excellent efficacy and good safety profile, has widely revolutionized the HCV treatment scenario. Recent real life studies reported excellent sustained virological response rates in HIV/HCV coinfected subjects, thus confirming data obtained in randomized clinical trials. However, certain issues have recently emerged in this population. In fact, high rates of acute HCV infect

Reading ability reflects individual differences in auditory brainstem function, even into adulthood.

Research with developmental populations suggests that the maturational state of auditory brainstem encoding is linked to reading ability. Specifically, children with poor reading skills resemble biologically younger children with respect to their auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) to speech stimulation. Because ABR development continues into adolescence, it is possible that the link between ABRs and reading ability changes or resolves as the brainstem matures. To examine these possibilities, ABRs were recorded at varying presentation rates in adults with diverse, yet unimpaired reading levels

Post-translational modifications of α-synuclein contribute to neurodegeneration in the colon of elderly individuals.

Synucleinopathies and abnormalities in the nerves of the enteric nervous system are hypothesized to be involved in age-associated motility disorders. The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression of various antigens, including α‑synuclein (Syn) and its post‑translational modified forms, in the human colon at various ages. In addition, the study aimed to correlate the expression of Syn with neurodegeneration. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of neurofilament (NF), Syn, as well as its nitrated (N) form in the healthy colonic tissue of 12 young (34.08±5.12 y

Selected Factors of Innate Immunity in Healthy Individuals with S. aureus Nasal Carriage.

Nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus represents a well-defined factor of risk involving community and hospital-acquired infections. Recently a significance of several host factors has been pointed out and, in particular, of immune determinants in nasal S. aureus colonization. Therefore, this study aimed at analysis of manifestation involving manifestation in the nasal secretions of important components of the host innate immunity - human beta-defensin-2 (HBD-2), lysozyme (Ly), and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) in healthy individuals and in persons with persistent carriage of S. aureus. The studi

Shifting Stakes: Understanding the Dynamic Roles of Individuals and Organizations in Social Media Protests.

In this paper we examine two protests characterized by substantial social media presence and distributed participation frameworks via two core questions: what roles did organizations and individuals play, and how did participants' social interactions change over the course of the protests? To answer these questions, we analyzed a large Twitter activity dataset for the #YoSoy132 student uprising in Mexico and Brazil's "bus rebellion." Results indicate that individuals initially took prominence at the protests but faded in importance as the movements dwindled and organizations took over. Regardi

Prevalence and Subtype Identification of Blastocystis sp. in Healthy Individuals in the Tunis Area, Tunisia.

Blastocystis sp. is currently the most common eukaryotic parasite found in humans. Despite its potential public health impact, epidemiological data regarding its prevalence and molecular subtype (ST) distribution in Maghreb are rarely reported. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of the parasite in a cohort of healthy food handler Tunisian individuals and to acquire the first molecular data regarding the distribution of Blastocystis sp. STs in this country. Therefore, 524 fecal samples were collected, and 68 of them (13%) were identified as positive for the parasit

Individual variability of cerebral autoregulation, posterior cerebral circulation and white matter hyperintensity.

KEY POINTS: Cerebral autoregulation (CA) is a key mechanism to protect brain perfusion in the face of changes in arterial blood pressure, but little is known about individual variability of CA and its relationship to the presence of brain white matter hyperintensity (WMH) in older adults, a type of white matter lesion related to cerebral small vessel disease (SVD). This study demonstrated the presence of large individual variability of CA in healthy older adults during vasoactive drug-induced changes in arterial pressure assessed at the internal carotid and vertebral arteries. We also observed
