Dyslexia is a specific learning disorder related to school failure. Detection is both crucial and challenging, especially in languages with transparent orthographies, such as Spanish. To make detecting dyslexia easier, we designed an online gamified test and a predictive machine learning model. In a study with more than 3,600 participants, our model correctly detected over 80% of the participants with dyslexia. To check the robustness of the method we tested our method using a new data set with over 1,300 participants with age customized tests in a different environment -a tablet instead of a

Waardenburg syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic disorder that is further divided into four subtypes with distinguishing clinical manifestations, categorized by phenotypic variations based on activation or deactivation of six specific gene types. The criteria for clinical diagnosis are established based on these phenotypic variants. While key clinical features may cause suspicion of WS, genetic testing confirms the diagnosis. Pigmentary defects are one of the hallmark features of WS while some individuals may exhibit sensorineural hearing loss, which can be progressive. Audiological treatment is es

INTRODUCTION: Gaucher disease is a genetic lysosomal storage disorder due to a glucocerebrosidase deficiency. Type 3, including neurological impairment, may have a specific phenotype in the context of the D409H mutation.
OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 22-year-old woman who presented with Gaucher disease. Enzyme replacement therapy by imiglucerase was followed by rapid clinical and biological improvement. However, communication difficulties, which were initially attributed to the language barrier, revealed neurological impairment. After complementary assessment, the diagnosis of type 3 G

Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a complex neurodevelopmental heritable disorder. Among DD candidate genes, DCDC2 is one of the most replicated, with rs793862, READ1 and rs793842 likely contribute to phenotypic variability in reading (dis)ability. In this study, we tested the effects of these genetic variants on DD as a categorical trait and on quantitative reading-related measures in a sample of 555 Italian nuclear families with 930 offspring, of which 687 were diagnosed with DD. We conducted both single-marker and haplotype analyses, finding that the READ1-deletion was significantly associated

We report a rare case of non-alcoholic Wernicke encephalopathy (WE) with polyneuropathy. A 24-year-old woman who had recently served a 4-month prison sentence and underwent a short period of dieting manifested slow response, weakness, language disorder and amnesia. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed typical lesions of WE. Examination of nerve conduction velocity revealed sensory-motor axonal polyneuropathy. The patient was immediately treated with thiamine. Neurological symptoms were alleviated in a few days and abnormal signals were markedly decreased in a follow-up MRI 1 week la

Persistent müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is a form of disordered sex development in which rudimentary müllerian structures are identified in phenotypically and genotypically normal males. It is caused by defects in the anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) system. Since patients with PMDS present with undescended testes, testosterone production by Leydig cells later in life is often decreased. The role of androgens in prostate cancerogenesis is well known. Cryptorchid testes and diminished testosterone levels in post-pubertal life in patients with PMDS play a protective role against prostate cancer, a

Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopmental genetic disorder with a prevalence of approximately 1 in 7500. It is caused by a hemizygous deletion of approximately 28 genes on the 7th chromosome (7q11.23), including the elastin allele. Individuals with WS have atypical facial characteristics, including medial eyebrow flair, epicanthal folds, upturned nose, elongated philtrum, and full lips. Infants typically experience constipation and colic. Cardiac and renal abnormalities, as well as hypertension, are common. Individuals with WS are at increased risk for hearing and vision difficulties. Gas

Developmental dyslexia is a frequent language-based learning disorder characterized by difficulty in reading. The predominant etiologic view postulates that reading impairment is related to phonological and orthographic dysfunction. The aim of this fMRI study was to evaluate the neural bases of phonological processing impairment in remediated dyslexic adults (DD). We used a rhyming words judgment task contrasted with an unreadable fonts font-matching judgment task to compare patterns of activation and functional asymmetry in DD and normal-reading young adults. We found evidence of a link betwe

There are some children with speech and/or language difficulties who are significantly more difficult to understand in connected speech than in single words. The study reported here explores the between-word behaviours of three such children, aged 11;8, 12;2 and 12;10. It focuses on whether these patterns could be accounted for by lenition, as suggested by a usage-based approach to phonology. The children carried out a repetition task, with sentences containing environments that can trigger assimilation and elision. Speech elicited was examined using a combination of perceptual and electropala

Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is a genetic disorder in males characterized by the presence of an extra X chromosome. Its most consistent endocrinological manifestations include lower testosterone production and impaired spermatogenesis. KS individuals have a general typical appearance with taller stature, and they demonstrate a characteristic cognitive phenotype involving weaknesses in verbal processing. Anomalous cerebral lateralization involves the inverse or weak dominance of hand, language, and visuospatial abilities and has been associated with the cognitive deficits of KS individuals. This a

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a disorder of declining language that is a frequent presentation of neurodegenerative diseases such as frontotemporal lobar degeneration. Three variants of PPA are recognized: progressive nonfluent aphasia, semantic dementia, and logopenic progressive aphasia. In an era of etiology-specific treatments for neurodegenerative conditions, determining the histopathological basis of PPA is crucial. Clinicopathological correlations in PPA emphasize the contributory role of dementia with Pick bodies and other tauopathies, TDP-43 proteinopathies, and Alzheimer disea

Acne vulgaris is an extremely common disorder affecting many adolescents and adults throughout their lifetimes. The pathogenesis of acne is multifactorial and is thought to involve excess sebum, follicular hyperkeratinization, bacterial colonization, and inflammation. Many therapeutic options exist for treating acne, including topical benzoyl peroxide, topical and oral antibiotics, topical and oral retinoids, and oral contraceptives. Oral antibiotics have been a mainstay in the treatment of acne for decades and function by exerting an antibacterial effect by reducing the follicular colonizatio

Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by changes in behaviour and language dysfunction. Two broad pathological subdivisions of FTLD are recognized in a recent classification scheme based on biochemical features: tau-positive pathology due to the accumulation of various forms of the microtubule-associated protein tau, such as FTLD with Pick bodies and corticobasal degeneration; and tau-negative pathology such as frontotemporal lobar degeneration with ubiquitin/TDP-43-immunoreactive inclusions. Etiologically based treatments aim to target the mech

Functional dysphonia-a voice disturbance in the absence of structural or neurologic laryngeal pathology-is an enigmatic and controversial voice disorder that is frequently encountered in multidisciplinary voice clinics. Poorly regulated activity of the intrinsic and extrinsic laryngeal muscles is cited as the proximal cause of functional dysphonia, but the origin of this dyregulated laryngeal muscle activity has not been fully elucidated. Several causes have been cited as contributing to this imbalanced muscle tension; however, recent research evidence points to specific personality traits as

Many people with mental health disorders experience mental health related stigma. This type of stigma may impact mental health care and treatment. The COVID-19 pandemic further impacted mental health stigma, indicating a need for psychiatric/mental health nurses to become involved in efforts to address mental health stigma. The purpose of this study was to understand psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) students' perspectives on how to address and reduce mental health stigma in the post-COVID era. A qualitative description design was used to collect data from a formal writing e

Protein self-interaction to form homodimers and higher-order homo-oligomers is a ubiquitous phenomenon fundamental to living organisms. Recent structural, system-level, and computational insights reveal that self-interacting proteins dictate the specificity, rewiring, and topological complexity of cellular signaling networks and macromolecular assemblies. Beyond their physiological roles, aberrant or dysregulated homotypic interactions disrupt cellular proteostasis, driving the formation of toxic non-native oligomers, pathological amyloid fibrillization, or aberrant liquid-liquid phase separat

The patient's functional status is important for assessing treatment progress, so cultural adaptation of self-reported scales and questionnaires is necessary. This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the LEFS into Polish in a sample of Polish-speaking patients with lower extremity disorders. The respondent group included 84 physically active adults (age = 35.87 ± 8.60 years), comprising 49 women and 35 men. Exploratory factor analysis showed the questionnaire had a two-factor structure (activities of daily living and sport activities). The internal agreement of the factors was excell
