Spatial Patterns of Cerebral Blood Flow in Alzheimer's Disease Identified by the Subtype and Stage Inference Algorithm.

INTRODUCTION: Much research has focused on the deposition of amyloid and tau proteins in the Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain, but many amyloid and tau models assumed a single spatial progression of amyloid and tau accumulation. We estimated the changing patterns of an indirect biomarker, i.e., the cerebral blood flow (CBF), in AD, and we discuss the pathological process of AD. METHODS: The participants were 341 patients who visited our hospital's outpatient department for memory loss (146 males, 195 females): 115 diagnosed with AD, 176 diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment, and 50 diagnosed

Diagnosis of chronic B-cell lymphoproliferative disease in peripheral blood = how machine learning may help to the interpretation of flow cytometry data.

Flow cytometry (FCM) has become a method of choice for immunologic characterization of chronic lymphoproliferative disease (CLPD). To reduce the potential subjectivities of FCM data interpretation, we developed a machine learning random forest algorithm (RF) allowing unsupervised analysis. This assay relies on 16 parameters obtained from our FCM screening panel, routinely used in the exploration of peripheral blood (PB) samples (mean fluorescence intensity values (MFI) of CD19, CD45, CD5, CD20, CD200, CD23, HLA-DR, CD10 in CD19-gated B cells, ratio of kappa/Lambda, and different ratios of MFI

Underwater Acoustic Signal Detection Using Calibrated Hidden Markov Model with Multiple Measurements.

It is important to find signals of interest (SOIs) when operating sonar systems. A threshold-based method is generally used for SOI detection. However, it induces a high false alarm rate at a low signal-to-noise ratio. On the other side, machine-learning-based detection is performed to obtain more reliable detection results using abundant training data, costing intensive time and labor. We propose a method with favorable detection performance by using a hidden Markov model (HMM) for sequential acoustic data, which requires no separate training data. Since the detection results from HMM are sig

Deep neural networks excel in COVID-19 disease severity prediction-a meta-regression analysis.

COVID-19 is a disease in which early prognosis of severity is critical for desired patient outcomes and for the management of limited resources like intensive care unit beds and ventilation equipment. Many prognostic statistical tools have been developed for the prediction of disease severity, but it is still unclear which ones should be used in practice. We aim to guide clinicians in choosing the best available tools to make optimal decisions and assess their role in resource management and assess what can be learned from the COVID-19 scenario for development of prediction models in similar m

Acoustic Features for Identifying Suicide Risk in Crisis Hotline Callers: Machine Learning Approach.

BACKGROUND: Crisis hotlines serve as a crucial avenue for the early identification of suicide risk, which is of paramount importance for suicide prevention and intervention. However, assessing the risk of callers in the crisis hotline context is constrained by factors such as lack of nonverbal communication cues, anonymity, time limits, and single-occasion intervention. Therefore, it is necessary to develop approaches, including acoustic features, for identifying the suicide risk among hotline callers early and quickly. Given the complicated features of sound, adopting artificial intelligence

Development of a clinical algorithm to predict phenotypic switches between atopic dermatitis and psoriasis (the "Flip-Flop" phenomenon).

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis vulgaris (PV) are almost mutually exclusive diseases with different immune polarizations, mechanisms and therapeutic targets. Switches to the other disease ("Flip-Flop" [FF] phenomenon) can occur with or without systemic treatment and are often referred to as paradoxical reactions under biological therapy. METHODS: The objective was to develop a diagnostic algorithm by combining clinical criteria of AD and PV to identify FF patients. The algorithm was prospectively validated in patients enrolled in the CK-CARE registry in Bonn, Germany. Afterwa

Identifying Psychosocial and Ecological Determinants of Enthusiasm In Youth: Integrative Cross-Sectional Analysis Using Machine Learning.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the factors contributing to mental well-being in youth is a public health priority. Self-reported enthusiasm for the future may be a useful indicator of well-being and has been shown to forecast social and educational success. Typically, cross-domain measures of ecological and health-related factors with relevance to public policy and programming are analyzed either in isolation or in targeted models assessing bivariate interactions. Here, we capitalize on a large provincial data set and machine learning to identify the sociodemographic, experiential, behavioral, and

Genetic Risk Assessment of Nonsyndromic Cleft Lip with or without Cleft Palate by Linking Genetic Networks and Deep Learning Models.

Recent deep learning algorithms have further improved risk classification capabilities. However, an appropriate feature selection method is required to overcome dimensionality issues in population-based genetic studies. In this Korean case-control study of nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P), we compared the predictive performance of models that were developed by using the genetic-algorithm-optimized neural networks ensemble (GANNE) technique with those models that were generated by eight conventional risk classification methods, including polygenic risk score (PRS), r

Bedside Ultrasound to Identify and Predict Severity of Dysphagia Following Ischemic Stroke: Human Versus Artificial Intelligence.

OBJECTIVE: Dysphagia is a significant ischemic stroke complication that can lead to aspiration. Identification of at-risk patients can be logistically difficult and costly. Researchers investigated whether quantitative ultrasound assessment of hyoid bone movement during induced swallowing would predict failure of videofluoroscopy (VFS) or fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES), as determined by a penetration-aspiration scale (PAS) score. Additionally, ability of a machine learning (ML) algorithm to predict PAS success or failure from real-time ultrasound video recordings was ass
