Predicting Risk of Ammonia Exposure in Broiler Housing: Correlation with Incidence of Health Issues.

The study aimed to forecast ammonia exposure risk in broiler chicken production, correlating it with health injuries using machine learning. Two chicken breeds, fast-growing (Ross®) and slow-growing (Hubbard®), were compared at different densities. Slow-growing birds had a constant density of 32 kg m-2, while fast-growing birds had low (16 kg m-2) and high (32 kg m-2) densities. Initial feeding was uniform, but nutritional demands led to varied diets later. Environmental data underwent selection, pre-processing, transformation, mining, analysis, and interpretation. Classification algorithms (d

Proposal for fasting insulin and HOMA-IR reference intervals based on an extensive Brazilian laboratory database.

OBJECTIVE: Fasting insulin and the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index are relatively simple and reliable noninvasive markers of insulin resistance (IR). Given the relevance of correctly diagnosing IR, we emphasize the importance of establishing reliable reference intervals (RIs) for these markers. This study aimed to determine the RIs of fasting insulin and HOMA-IR index in adults living in Rio de Janeiro and, secondarily, to verify potential RI differences between sexes. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Serum insulin levels of 146,497 individuals (ages 20-60 years) who u

Large language models for structured reporting in radiology: past, present, and future.

Structured reporting (SR) has long been a goal in radiology to standardize and improve the quality of radiology reports. Despite evidence that SR reduces errors, enhances comprehensiveness, and increases adherence to guidelines, its widespread adoption has been limited. Recently, large language models (LLMs) have emerged as a promising solution to automate and facilitate SR. Therefore, this narrative review aims to provide an overview of LLMs for SR in radiology and beyond. We found that the current literature on LLMs for SR is limited, comprising ten studies on the generative pre-trained tran

Ancient evolutionary origins of hepatitis E virus in rodents.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV; family Hepeviridae) infections cause >40,000 human deaths annually. Zoonotic infections predominantly originate from ungulates and occasionally from rats, highlighting the zoonotic potential of rodent-associated hepeviruses. We conducted host genomic data mining and uncovered two genetically divergent rodent-associated hepeviruses, and two bat-associated hepeviruses genetically related to known bat-associated strains. We thus analyzed 2,565 liver specimens from 108 rodent and shrew species sampled from globally understudied regions and hosts in Africa, Asia, and Latin A

In-use dissipation of technology-critical elements from vehicles and renewable energy technologies in Vienna, Austria: A public health matter?

The rollout of electric vehicles and photovoltaic panels is essential to mitigate climate change. However, they depend on technology-critical elements (TCEs), which can be harmful to human health and whose use is rapidly expanding, while recycling is lacking. While mining has received substantial attention, in-use dissipation in urban areas has so far not been assessed, for example, corrosion and abrasion of vehicle components and weather-related effects affecting thin-film photovoltaic panels. Therefore, the question arises to which extent TCEs dissipate during use and which potential non-occ

Evidence that CD36 is expressed on red blood cells and constitutes a novel blood group system of clinical importance.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Polymorphic molecules expressed on the surface of certain blood cells are traditionally categorized as blood groups and human platelet or neutrophil antigens. CD36 is widely considered a platelet antigen (Naka) and anti-CD36 can cause foetal/neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FNAIT) in CD36-negative pregnant women. CD36 is used as a marker of differentiation in early erythroid culture. During the experimental culture of CD34+ cells from random blood donors, we observed that one individual lacked CD36. We sought to investigate this observation further and determine

EIF4A3-mediated biogenesis of circSTX6 promotes bladder cancer metastasis and cisplatin resistance.

BACKGROUND: Cisplatin (CDDP)-based chemotherapy is a standard first-line treatment for metastatic bladder cancer (BCa) patients, and chemoresistance remains a major challenge in clinical practice. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have emerged as essential regulators in carcinogenesis and cancer progression. However, the role of circRNAs in mediating CDDP chemosensitivity has yet to be well elucidated in BCa. METHODS: CircSTX6 (hsa_circ_0007905) was identified by mining the public circRNA datasets and verified by Sanger sequencing, agarose gel electrophoresis, RNase R treatment and qRT-PCR assays. The

Persulfate activation by biochar and iron: Effect of chloride on formation of reactive species and transformation of N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET).

Fenton-like processes using persulfate for oxidative water treatment and contaminant removal can be enhanced by the addition of redox-active biochar, which accelerates the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) and increases the yield of reactive species that react with organic contaminants. However, available data on the formation of non-radical or radical species in the biochar/Fe(III)/persulfate system are inconsistent, which limits the evaluation of treatment efficiency and applicability in different water matrices. Based on competition kinetics calculations, we employed different scavengers and p

Patient-level cost analysis of subfertility pathways in the Dutch healthcare system.

BACKGROUND: Health economic evaluations require cost data as a key input, and reimbursement policies and systems should incentivize valuable care. Subfertility is a growing global phenomenon, and Dutch per-treatment DRGs alone do not support value-based decision-making because they don't reflect patient-level variation or the impact of technologies on costs across entire patient pathways. METHODS: We present a real-world micro-costing analysis of subfertility patient pathways (n = 4.190) using time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) and process mining in the Dutch healthcare system, and bu

Causality-Enhanced Multiple Instance Learning With Graph Convolutional Networks for Parkinsonian Freezing-of-Gait Assessment.

Freezing of gait (FoG) is a common disabling symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). It is clinically characterized by sudden and transient walking interruptions for specific human body parts, and it presents the localization in time and space. Due to the difficulty in extracting global fine-grained features from lengthy videos, developing an automated five-point FoG scoring system is quite challenging. Therefore, we propose a novel video-based automated five-classification FoG assessment method with a causality-enhanced multiple-instance-learning graph convolutional network (GCN). This method in

Unraveling the role of anthropogenic and hydrologic drivers with respect to the optical and molecular properties of dissolved organic matter and organic phosphorus in a P-contaminated river.

Anthropogenic and hydrological drivers are key factors influencing the fate of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) in river runoff. However, how anthropogenic disturbances and hydrological conditions jointly affect the composition and characteristics of DOM and DOP in river runoff remains unclear. This study used fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, and the stable water isotopes to interpret the chemical composition and properties of DOM and DOP as well as their linkages to anthropogenic disturbances and hydro

Endocrine disruptors in e-waste dismantling dust: In silico prediction of mixture-induced reproductive toxicity mechanisms.

The constant exposure of humans to a mixture of low doses of toxic substances, emerging from the daily emission of toxic dust containing various metals and organic compounds in electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) recycling areas, poses potential harmful effects on health and the environment. While individually recognized as endocrine disruptors affecting hormonal balance, the combined impact of these toxic substances in a mixture remains insufficiently explored, particularly in relation to reproductive health. Thus, the aim of this in silico analysis was to: (i) assess the relationship b

Inhibition of B-cell activating factor activity using active compounds from Physalis angulata in the mechanism of nephrotic syndrome improvement: A computational approach.

Nephrotic syndrome, a multifaceted medical condition characterized by significant proteinuria, has recently prompted a reorientation of research efforts toward B-cell-mediated mechanisms. This shift underscores the pivotal role played by B-cells in its pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to explore potential therapeutic pathways, with specific attention given to compounds found in Physalis angulata, including withanolides, such as physalins, which constitute one of the five distinct withanolide subgroups identified in Physalis angulata. Furthermore, the study assessed the monoclonal antibo

Algorithmic Identification of Treatment-Emergent Adverse Events From Clinical Notes Using Large Language Models: A Pilot Study in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Outpatient clinical notes are a rich source of information regarding drug safety. However, data in these notes are currently underutilized for pharmacovigilance due to methodological limitations in text mining. Large language models (LLMs) like Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) have shown progress in a range of natural language processing tasks but have not yet been evaluated on adverse event (AE) detection. We adapted a new clinical LLM, University of California - San Francisco (UCSF)-BERT, to identify serious AEs (SAEs) occurring after treatment with a non-steroi

Study on the Law of True Triaxial Hydraulic Fracturing by Acoustic Emission Monitoring.

Hydraulic fracturing generates fractures in a coal seam, which has been extensively used in coal mining and disaster management. To study the influences of water injection pressure and time on the propagation of hydraulic fracture, we conducted true triaxial hydraulic fracturing experiments under acoustic emission monitoring. Five briquette specimens were prepared by molding the mixture of coal powder, cement, river sand, and distilled water under 60 MPa to simulate the properties of coal seam. True triaxial loading was used to simulate the in situ stress environment of the coal seam. Hydrauli
