Predicting multiple mental health outcomes in adolescents using explainable machine learning models.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, and stress, are an increasing public health concern, yet the factors associated with different mental health outcomes may vary across domains. This study investigated shared and outcome-specific predictive features of depression, anxiety, perceived stress, and psychological well-being using explainable machine learning models. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,088 adolescents aged 13-18 years recruited from secondary schools in Wuhan, China, using multistage cluster sampling. Participants comp

Integrating social cognitive theory with machine learning to predict MSM-women sexual behavior: a multicenter random forest model development study in China.

Understanding and predicting sexual behavior patterns through the lens of Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) is essential for identifying behavioral bridges that facilitate HIV transmission. MSM who engage in sexual activity with women (MSM-W) represent a critical yet underexplored subgroup in China. However, existing studies lack theory-driven predictive frameworks that explicitly integrate psychological mechanisms with robust analytics. This study aimed to develop and validate an SCT-guided machine-learning model to predict MSM-W behavior and to evaluate its discriminatory and calibration perform

Stress is associated with an increased risk of recurrent seizures in adults.

OBJECTIVE: The literature is sparse on the complex interrelationships between stressors, depression, anxiety disorders, and epilepsy. We hypothesized that a relationship exists between stress and epilepsy. We evaluated whether markers of stress are associated with seizure recurrence in a low income community-based cohort of adults with single unprovoked seizure or newly diagnosed epilepsy. METHODS: We ascertained adult residents of Northern Manhattan and Harlem, New York City, with a first unprovoked seizure or newly diagnosed epilepsy, between December 2010 and January 2013. At enrollment, w

[Multi-disciplinary comprehensive management of cancer pain: current status and prospects].

Cancer pain not only affects the physiological functions of patients with malignancies but also significantly impairs their mental health and quality of life. Single-discipline treatment approaches are often insufficient to address the complex and diverse needs of pain management. The multi-disciplinary team (MDT) model integrates expertise from pain medicine, oncology, psychology, rehabilitation, and other relevant fields to provide comprehensive care through pain assessment, individualized treatment, and continuous follow-up. This review summarizes the current status of MDT-based cancer pain

Current situation and correlates of perceived stigma among people living with HIV: a cross-sectional study in China.

Addressing stigma is vital to improving the well-being of people living with HIV (PLWH). This cross-sectional study, including 3,040 PLWH across five Chinese cities (Nov 2022-Mar 2023), found 1261 (41.5%) reported perceived stigma. Medical-related stigma was most common (19.9%). Stigma prevalence was higher in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen (51.3%) than in Kunming and Nanning (32.3%). Generalized linear modeling linked stigma frequency to lower social support and caregivers' stigma; psychological impact was tied to comorbidities and caregivers' stigma. Findings call for tailored, collaborativ

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-Enhanced Behavior Therapy as An Intervention for Trichotillomania and Excoriation Disorder (Skin Picking): A Review.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)-enhanced behavior therapy (A-EBT) is the most empirically supported treatment of trichotillomania. Support for A-EBT for excoriation disorder is budding. In this article, we review the A-EBT model, including support for targeting psychological inflexibility, as well as the use of traditional behavioral procedures to reduce non-focused behaviors. To date there are 17 studies investigating A-EBT for trichotillomania and skin picking across ages and treatment delivery methods (individual, group, telehealth, and asynchronous web-based delivery). The work has

Persistent Neurological, Dissociative, and Amnestic Symptoms Following a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in an Adolescent: A Complex Case of Conversion Disorder.

The diagnosis of conversion disorder may be given to patients with unexplained neurological symptoms after the exclusion of medical and organic etiologies, suggesting a psychiatric etiology. It requires a thorough examination of all contributing factors across the biopsychosocial model. With a variety of possible presentations, the evaluation and treatment of conversion disorder should reflect its complexity. This case report describes a case of conversion disorder complicated by mild traumatic brain injury and acute psychological re-traumatization in an adolescent with social anxiety and focu

Mixed methods in health psychology: theoretical and practical considerations of the third paradigm.

This article has two purposes: to examine why mixed methods is a legitimate approach particularly well suited to health psychology; and to describe the challenges inherent in conducting mixed methods research. First, arguments justifying the status of mixed methods as a third paradigm alongside solely quantitative and qualitative frameworks are discussed. Second, a qualitatively driven model of mixed methods is illustrated using examples from a research programme exploring the psychosocial impact of a rare, genetic skin disorder. The flexibility of a mixed methods approach enables the research

Adherence to oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapies in chronic myeloid leukemia.

Ensuring adherence to therapy is a challenge in chronic diseases, particularly in cancers such as chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), where there has been increased availability and use of oral formulations. A conceptual model of adherence was developed based on findings from a comprehensive literature review, to inform strategies for improving adherence to oral CML therapies. A complex interplay of factors (including clinical, psychological and behavioural) influence adherence to such therapies. Healthcare professionals have a key role in promoting and facilitating adherence and future strategies

[Intervention in children with pragmatic language and communication disorders].

AIMS: In this paper we analyse the educational and therapeutic needs of children who present pragmatic disorders in language and communication. DEVELOPMENT: Pragmatic disorders in language and communication stand apart from the other disorders affecting the remaining aspects of language development. Their less specific nature goes beyond the purely linguistic domain and involves wide areas of the patient's affective and social development. CONCLUSIONS: Not only is it necessary to adapt the general model of speech therapy intervention, but also to include it within a set of pedagogical (based

Computer-aided design and fabrication of statistically shaped nasal prostheses: A feasibility study.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: A nasal prosthesis may compensate for a partial or complete defect of the nose associated with trauma or amputation. However, the design and production is time-consuming, expensive, and expertize-dependent. Computer-generated prosthesis models and 3D printing can optimize the process. PURPOSE: The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate a novel method for nasal prosthesis design utilizing statistical shape modeling (SSM) on a cohort of participants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The prosthesis shapes were generated by a design algorithm and fabricated through a 3-dimensiona

Application Efficacy of the FACE-Q Scale Combined With Anatomic Landmark-Based Evaluation in Preoperative 3D-Printed Model Simulated Surgical Reduction for Cranio-Maxillofacial Multiple Fractures.

BACKGROUND: The evaluation of therapeutic efficacy for cranio-maxillofacial fractures necessitates balancing objective anatomic reduction accuracy with subjective patient-reported quality of life. Traditional methods rely on radiographic metrics while neglecting multidimensional patient experiences. OBJECTIVE: This study integrates 3D-printed model-based anatomic landmark validation with quantitative FACE-Q scale evaluation, conducting a synergistic analysis between surgical precision (submillimeter-level error control) and patient-reported outcomes (appearance, function, psychology), thereby

Finding salvage in standardization? Structural and longitudinal evaluation of the patient health questionnaire anxiety and depression scale in a UK representative sample.

OBJECTIVES: Some research funders mandate the use of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) as independent measures of depression and anxiety. This study examined their independence in a UK representative sample by testing the structural validity, external validity, longitudinal measurement invariance and growth trajectories of the Patient Health Questionnaire Anxiety and Depression Scale (PHQ-ADS). METHODS: Data from Waves 1 (N = 2025), 2 (N = 1406) and 3 (N = 1166) of the COVID-19 Psychological Research Consortium Study were analysed. Confirmat

The Culture of Silence and Inuit Mental Health in Post-Pandemic Greenland: Reconfiguring Silence and Voice Beyond the Talking Cure.

Over the past three decades, psychological trauma has become a central framework in Indigenous mental-health research, shaping how silence, disclosure, and healing are interpreted. Within this framework, Inuit silence has been framed as a collective pathology-a "culture of silence"-and a risk factor contributing to suicide in the Arctic. In this article, I draw on pandemic-era public communication and professional narratives collected at a large health event in Greenland to critically reflect on cultures of silence and confession. The article demonstrates how crises such as the pandemic bring

Predicting Miscarriage Risk Based on Periodontal and Hematological Parameters Using Artificial Neural Network and XGBoost Models.

Background: Miscarriage is a significant global health concern, affecting approximately 10-20% of recognized pregnancies and resulting in substantial physical and psychological consequences. Chronic inflammatory conditions such as periodontitis may contribute to pregnancy loss through systemic inflammatory and immune-mediated pathways. However, the combined predictive value of periodontal destruction and hematological inflammatory markers for miscarriage risk remains insufficiently understood. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of periodontal and hematological parameters for predicting

Modes of Cannabis Use and Mental Health Outcomes Among Older Adults in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use among older adults (≥ 65) in the US has increased substantially in recent years. However, physiologic changes associated with aging can complicate cannabis' effects in older populations, particularly as different modes of consumption have distinct pharmacokinetic effects. This study estimates the prevalence of different modes of cannabis use in this population and examines their associations with mental health outcomes. METHODS: We analyzed data from older adults aged ≥ 65 years with past-year cannabis use (N = 1515) from the pooled 2022-2024 National Survey on Drug U

Leveraging Social Media and AI for Early Community Mental Health Support.

Background Mental health conditions have become a leading cause of disability worldwide, yet stigma, financial barriers, and limited access to care impede effective treatment. Amid these challenges, more people are turning to online platforms like Reddit to express psychological distress and seek informal support. However, these platforms often lack mechanisms to guide users toward professional care. This study explores a community-facing framework that leverages natural language processing and large language models (LLMs) to detect mental health concerns in social media posts and generate per

Combined Preventive and Preconditioning Treatments for the Comorbidity of Alzheimer's Disease and Ischemic Stroke in a GluN3A Knockout Mouse and a 5xFAD Mouse.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and stroke have been identified as risk factors for each other. More than half of AD patients suffer stroke attacks and worse ischemic injuries. There has been a lack of research focus and clinical treatment for the comorbidity of these neurological disorders. AD and ischemic stroke share characteristic pathophysiology, including hyperactivities of excitatory neurons and NMDA receptors (NMDARs), excitotoxicity, and synapse/neurovascular destruction. Our recent investigations identified the deficiency of the NMDAR regulatory GluN3A (NR3A) subunit as a novel pathogenesis

Establishment and application of TSDPSO-SVM model combined with multi-dimensional feature fusion method in the identification of fracture-related infection.

Fracture-related infection (FRI) is one of the most common and intractable complications in orthopedic trauma surgery. This complication can impose severe psychological burdens and socio-economic impacts on patients. Although the definition of FRI has been proposed recently by an expert group, the diagnostic criteria for FRI are not yet standardized. A total of 4761 FRI patients and 4761 fracture patients (Non-FRI) were included in the study. The feature set of patients included imaging characteristics, demographic information, clinical symptoms, microbiological findings, and serum inflammator
