Motor activity and Becker's muscular dystrophy: lights and shadows.

Becker's disease is an inherited muscular dystrophy caused by mutations in the gene coding for the dystrophin protein that leads to quantitative and/or qualitative protein dysfunction and consequent muscle degeneration. Studies in animal models demonstrate that, while eccentric or high-intensity training are deleterious for dystrophic muscles, low-intensity aerobic training may slowdown the disease process and progression. Based on these preclinical data, the available studies in patients with Becker's muscular dystrophy undergoing workout on a cycle ergometer or on a treadmill, at a heart rat

How does acute pain influence biomechanics and quadriceps function in individuals with patellofemoral pain?

OBJECTIVES: Beside pathophysiological factors, pain is believed to play a crucial role in the progression of patellofemoral pain (PFP). However, the isolated effect of pain on biomechanics and quadriceps function has not been investigated in PFP. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the effect of pain on quadriceps function and lower limb biomechanics in individuals with PFP. METHODS: Twenty-one individuals with PFP (11 males and 10 females, age: 29.76 ± 6.36 years, height: 1.74 ± 0.09 m, mass: 70.12 ± 8.56 kg) were measured at two different occasions: when not and when experiencing acute pa

Muscle damage responses to resistance exercise performed with high-load versus low-load associated with partial blood flow restriction in young women.

The aim of this study was to compare if an acute exercise session of high-load resistance training (HL-RT, e.g. 70% of 1 repetition-maximum, 1 RM) induces a higher magnitude of muscle damage compared with a RT protocol with low-loads (e.g. 20% 1 RM) associated with partial blood flow restriction (LL-BFR), and investigate the recovery in the days after the protocols. We used an unilateral crossover research design in which 10 young women (22(2) y; 162(5) cm; 66(11) kg) performed HL-RT and LL-BFR in a randomized, counterbalanced manner with a minimum interval of 2 weeks between protocols. Structured Motor Rehabilitation After Selective Nerve Transfers.

After severe nerve injuries, selective nerve transfers provide an opportunity to restore motor and sensory function. Functional recovery depends both on the successful re-innervation of the targets in the periphery and on the motor re-learning process entailing cortical plasticity. While there is an increasing number of methods to improve rehabilitation, their routine implementation in a clinical setting remains a challenge due to their complexity and long duration. Therefore, recommendations for rehabilitation strategies are presented with the aim of guiding medical doctors and therapists thr

The Association Between Knee Extensor Force Steadiness, Force Accuracy, and Mobility in Older Adults Who Have Fallen.

BACKGROUND: Older adults often experience limited mobility, lower extremity muscle weakness, and increased fall risk. Furthermore, when older adults perform tasks that require control of submaximal force, impairments in their ability to maintain steady and accurate force output have been reported. Such problems may be related to deteriorating levels of mobility, particularly in older adults who have fallen. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether an association exists between muscle force steadiness (MFS) or muscle force accuracy (MFA) of the knee extensors and mobility in

Randomized trial of cesarean vs vaginal delivery for effects on the pelvic floor in squirrel monkeys.

BACKGROUND: Vaginal delivery is a risk factor in pelvic floor disorders. We previously described changes in the pelvic floor associated with pregnancy and parturition in the squirrel monkey, a species with a humanlike pattern of spontaneous age- and parity-associated pelvic organ prolapse. OBJECTIVE: The potential to prevent or diminish these changes with scheduled cesarean delivery (CD) has not been evaluated. In a randomized, controlled trial, we compared female squirrel monkeys undergoing spontaneous vaginal delivery with those undergoing scheduled primary CD for pelvic floor muscle volume

The role of botulinum toxin type a-induced motor endplates after peripheral nerve repair.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that the increased number of new motor endplates induced by botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) injection before nerve injury would be reinnervated after nerve repair, resulting in greater force generation. METHODS: Thirty male Wistar rats were divided randomly into 3 groups: (1) controls; (2) a group with saline solution injection; and (3) a group with BTX-A injection into gastrocnemius muscle (BTX group). Thirty-six days after the injections the left sciatic nerve was divided and coapted in all groups. Eight weeks later, muscle force

Study of cervical muscle response and injury of driver during a frontal vehicle collision.

Frontal vehicle collisions can cause injury to a driver's cervical muscles resulting from intense changes in muscle strain and muscle load. This study investigated the influence of collision forces in a sled test environment using a modified Hybrid III 50th percentile dummy equipped with simulated spring-type muscles. Cervical muscle responses including strain and load of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM), splenius capitis (SPL), and trapezius (TRP) were analyzed, and muscle injury was assessed. The SCM, SPL, and TRP suffered average peak muscle strains of 21%, 40%, and 23%, respectively, exceedin

A bibliographic review of medicine and science research in dancesport.

DanceSport is the competitive form of ballroom dancing, and even though it has more participants worldwide than ballet and modern dance, there is less peer-reviewed research. A review was conducted to identify all relevant literature to help researchers and clinicians gain an enhanced understanding of dancesport. Eight databases were searched, with 34 articles found in topics including participation motives, psychology, exercise physiology, fitness training, injuries and injury prevention, biomechanics, menstrual dysfunction, and substance use. Our results indicate that researchers have been i

Performance differences between sexes in the pop-up phase of surfing.

Surfing is a dynamic sport that is multidirectional in nature and requires peak performance in variable ocean conditions. Its growing popularity among the female population has stirred curiosity as to whether women can and will 1 day face their male counterparts in head-to-head competition at the top levels. The purpose of this study was to examine male and female differences in performance of a simulated surfing pop-up movement. Forty recreationally trained surfers (20 men and 20 women) were instructed to lie prone on a force plate, in the pop-up position (similar to a push-up), with only the

Fibrin matrices with affinity-based delivery systems and neurotrophic factors promote functional nerve regeneration.

Glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) have both been shown to enhance peripheral nerve regeneration following injury and target different neuronal populations. The delivery of either growth factor at the site of injury may, therefore, result in quantitative differences in motor nerve regeneration and functional recovery. In this study we evaluated the effect of affinity-based delivery of GDNF or NGF from fibrin-filled nerve guidance conduits (NGCs) on motor nerve regeneration and functional recovery in a 13 mm rat sciatic nerve defect. Seven experimental groups

The effects of sectioning the spring ligament on rearfoot stability and posterior tibial tendon efficiency.

UNLABELLED: Posterior tibial tendon insufficiency has been implicated as a cause of adult acquired flatfoot. Multiple theories are debated as to whether or not a flatfoot deformity develops secondary to insufficiency of the posterior tibial tendon or of the ligamentous structures such as the spring ligament complex. This cadaveric study was undertaken in an attempt to determine the effect that sectioning the spring ligament complex has on foot stability, and whether engagement of the posterior tibial tendon would be able to compensate for the loss of the spring ligament complex. A 3-dimensiona

Recombinant human growth hormone (rHGH) for muscle enhancement in knee osteoarthritis: protocol for a pilot, randomised placebo-controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: The management of active patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (KnOA) who are too young for total knee arthroplasty poses a specific challenge to clinicians. Research studies show that improving quadriceps muscle strength improves pain and function; however, aspects of the disease render it difficult for patients to achieve and maintain improvements. Recombinant human growth hormone (rHGH) is shown to increase the magnitude and duration of muscle growth when combined with exercise treatment in adult populations. Hence, rHGH combined with physical therapy may provide meani
