OBJECTIVE: To identify the risk factors for patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in neonates.
METHODS: Fifty infants with PDA and 100 infants without PDA were enrolled. Chi-square test, Student's t test and the linear correlation analysis were used to study the clinical data. Logistic regression analysis was used to investigate the independent risk factors for PDA.

Melkersson-Rosenthal Syndrome (MRS) is a rare disorder characterized by orofacial edema, facial palsy, and fissured tongue. A 64-year-old man presented with a fissured tongue and persistent chronic right upper eyelid edema of 15 years duration. Equine piroplasmosis due to Theileria equi and Babesia caballi is endemic in Trinidad. A case of equine piroplasmosis due to T. equi was diagnosed in a thoroughbred foal at 10h post-partum. Mesothelioma is a malignancy of the pleura, pericardium and peritoneum that is rarely seen in cutaneous biopsies. PURPOSE: To describe the histopathologic and immunologic characteristics of late artificial corneal failure in a small series of patients who underwent AlphaCor implantation and to elucidate the mechanisms involved.

Babesia divergens-like parasites identified in human babesiosis cases in Missouri and Kentucky and in eastern cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus) on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, share identical small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequences. We report a unique case of a collision tumor of the kidney composed of a peripheral neuroepithelioma (PNE) and a transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) that occurred in a 67-year-old man with a long history of superficial TCC of both the bladder and bilateral upper urinary tracts. We studied a patient with a mitochondrial encephalomyopathy characterized by the presence of all the cardinal features of both myoclonic epilepsy and ragged-red fibers (MERRF) and mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and strokelike episodes (MELAS) syndromes. The present study has been carried out with the main objective of determining the prevalence rate of bacterial vaginosis (BV) in a population of asymptomatic pregnant women (8th to 9th month of pregnancy). Tinea unguium (TU) is very common in tropical and subtropical regions. An inexpensive, quick and sensitive test is essential for screening the nail specimens. We investigated if a test using potassium hydroxide (KOH)-treated nail clippings, which were then crushed and stained with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), could be useful for diagnosing TU.
