Approaches to worker rehabilitation by occupational and physical therapists in the United States: factors impacting practice.

Work-related rehabilitation services have changed in nature and scope since their inception in the late 1970s. A review of the literature reveals a large body of published data concerning the various approaches used by therapists in this practice area, but a limited number of comparison studies documenting the value of one approach over the other. This national survey of physical and occupational therapists in the US was conducted in 2002, and examined the prevailing trends in service provision, and factors that determine the nature of services provided to clients. Results indicate that servic

Prevention of lead poisoning in construction workers: a new public health approach.

BACKGROUND: In 1990, Yale University, the Connecticut Departments of Health Services and of Transportation, the Connecticut Construction Industries Association, and the state's construction trade unions created the Connecticut Road Industry Surveillance Project (CRISP). METHODS: Data from 90 bridge projects from 1991 to 1995 and approximately 2,000 workers were evaluated. The distribution of peak lead concentrations in the blood for CRISP workers classified into five groups were compared to that from workers outside of Connecticut. RESULTS: This demonstration project was instrumental in lowe

A workplace breast cancer screening program. Costs and components.

Screening for breast cancer can result in early detection of malignancies and lives saved. Many employers now offer periodic screening as an employee health benefit, and some have established screening programs in the workplace. This study was performed to identify the employer costs of breast cancer screening in the workplace, referrals for suspicious findings, and initial treatment of malignant disease. Additionally, the costs for these same services, had they been obtained outside of a workplace screening program, were estimated. Data on program components and associated costs for an establ

Post-abortion adjustment of health care professionals in training.

Sixty-three women students of the health care professions were surveyed about their abortion and post-abortion experiences, feelings, and attitudes. Variables predictive of short- and long-term adjustment, belief in the wisdom of the choice, and right to choose were analysed, as were effects on emotional and attitudinal responses of passage of time and pressure to abort. Most reported mild, transient, short-term negative effects, and generally benign long-term effects. Implications of the findings are discussed.

Occupational exposure and lung cancer risk.

The importance of occupation held longest as a risk factor for lung cancer was examined in a prospective study in Norway of 11,995 men, among whom 125 cases occurred in a follow-up from 1966 through 1978. Based on information about occupation held longest, the respondents were classified into 3 groups according to suspected exposure to respiratory carcinogens at the workplace. After stratification for age, place of residence and cigarette smoking, we found a highly significant relative risk of 2.6 for those judged to have experienced definite exposure versus the group with no workplace exposur

Smoking intervention in the workplace: review and recommendations.

Growing interest has been expressed by the business community concerning intervention against smoking in the workplace. As most adult smokers are unlikely to have access to smokers' clinics or other treatment facilities outside the workplace, the workplace itself could be an ideal location for the provision of treatment programs. If the interest of the business community can be translated into action, large populations of smokers would become accessible to workplace treatment programs. Despite this possibility, the potential of the workplace for smoking intervention remains largely unexplored.

Attitudes towards mental health and help-seeking in railway workers.

BACKGROUND: TRiM (Trauma Risk Management) has been shown to improve mental health and attitudes towards mental health in high-risk occupational groups; however, there has been no research into how TRiM might work for railway workers. AIMS: To assess whether attending a TRiM training course alters mental health and attitudes to mental health-related help-seeking in railway workers. METHODS: Workers completed a survey assessing mental health and attitudes towards mental health and help-seeking, before and after a 2-day TRiM course; follow-up questionnaires were administered 4 months post-cours

INTRODUCTION: Leptospirosis is a neglected zoonotic disease caused by Leptospira spirochetes and remains a significant public health concern in tropical and subtropical regions of India. The humid subtropical climate of Eastern Uttar Pradesh favors its transmission. METHODS: To assess the occurrence, demographic characteristics, seasonal trends, and epidemiological distribution of leptospirosis in Eastern Uttar Pradesh. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 2430 clinically suspected cases. Serum samples were tested for Leptospira-specific IgM antibodies using enzyme-linked immunosorbent as

Multi-omics evidence reveals robust airborne-human resistome connectivity driven by high-risk ARGs and mediated by Staphylococcus.

Airborne microbiomes are considered an important source of human antimicrobial resistance (AMR) exposure, yet multi-omics evidence linking airborne and human nasal resistomes remains limited. Here, we integrated metagenomic sequencing and whole-genome sequencing of antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus isolates to investigate the connectivity between air and human nasal resistomes in dairy farm environments. Metagenomic taxonomic profiling showed that Staphylococcus was prominent in total suspended particles (TSP) and consistently detected across all samples. Among environmental reservoirs, TSP

Performance changes and neuromuscular alterations in sprague dawley rats following repeated occupational exposures to the pesticide malathion.

Organophosphate pesticides, such as malathion, have been linked to various pathological effects, including neurodegeneration. Acute exposure to malathion, a non-reversible acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor, causes adverse effects in mammals. However, the impact of subacute, occupational-like repeated exposure on motoneuron (MN) and neuromuscular junction (NMJ) anatomy is less understood. We hypothesized that repeated malathion exposure would produce motor performance deficits accompanied by anatomical alterations in spinal MNs and NMJs consistent with neurodegeneration. We also hypothesize

[Triggers of ICD-11 adjustment disorder: differences in symptom progression and socio-medical prognosis].

Background. In ICD-11, adjustment disorder (AjD) is defined as a psychological response to identifiable stressors following stressful life events, characterized by preoccupation and failure to adapt. The aim of this study was to examine whether different trigger domains of AjD (occupational, familial, or somatic) differ with regard to symptom severity, changes in psychopathology during rehabilitation, and socio-medical outcomes. It was hypothesized that work-related AjD would be associated with a less favorable socio-medical course. Methods. A clinical sample of inpatients undergoing psychosom

"Every shoulder is different": A qualitative study of clinicians' insights on the causative factors and strategies of managing work-related shoulder disorders among firefighters.

BACKGROUND: Work-related shoulder disorders (WSDs) are the third most prevalent work-related musculoskeletal disorder in firefighting, a significant occupational health concern among firefighters (FFs). However, comprehensive understanding of clinician perspectives on causative factors and evidence-based management strategies remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To explore clinicians' perspectives on: (a) the underlying causative factors contributing to WSDs; and (b) management strategies specific to firefighters. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 clinicians (11 males, 4 fema

Unable to Switch Off: Fear of Missing Out, Affective Rumination, and Psychological Detachment from Work.

The expansion of digital connectivity has reshaped contemporary work environments, increasing flexibility while simultaneously blurring the boundaries between work and personal life. In such contexts, employees may experience difficulties in psychologically detaching from work during off-job time. Drawing on the Effort-Recovery model and Conservation of Resources theory, this study examined whether affective work-related rumination indirectly explained the association between Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and psychological detachment. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 228 employees from
