A large-scale study on epidemiology and risk factors for chronic ankle instability in young adults.

Up to 40% of ankle sprains can result in chronic ankle instability (CAI). The prevalence of CAI and its association with body mass index (BMI) and height in the general young adult population has not been reported. The database records of young adults before recruitment into mandatory military service were studied. Information on the disability codes associated with CAI was retrieved. Logistic regression models were used to assess the association between the BMI and body height with various grades of CAI severity. The study cohort included 829,791 subjects (470,125 males and 359,666 females).

Lipoprotein subfractions in metabolic syndrome and obesity: clinical significance and therapeutic approaches.

Small, dense low density lipoprotein (sdLDL) represents an emerging cardiovascular risk factor, since these particles can be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) independently of established risk factors, including plasma lipids. Obese subjects frequently have atherogenic dyslipidaemia, including elevated sdLDL levels, in addition to elevated triglycerides (TG), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and apolipoprotein-B, as well as decreased high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. Obesity-related co-morbidities, such as metabolic syndrome (MetS) are also characterized by dys

An assessment of non-communicable diseases, diabetes, and related risk factors in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Kwajelein Atoll, Ebeye Island: a systems perspective.

Non-communicable diseases (NCD) have been declared a health emergency in the US-affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI). This assessment, funded by the National Institutes of Health, was conducted on Ebeye Island of Kwajelein Atoll, Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) to describe the burdens due to selected NCD (diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, chronic kidney disease); assess the system of service capacity and activities for service delivery, data collection, and reporting; and identify the key issues that need to be addressed. Findings reveal that the risk factors of poor diet, la

Relation of childhood obesity/cardiometabolic phenotypes to adult cardiometabolic profile: the Bogalusa Heart Study.

Not all obese adults have cardiometabolic abnormalities. It is unknown whether this is true in children and, if true, whether children who have metabolically healthy overweight/obesity (MHO) will also have favorable cardiometabolic profiles in adulthood. These aspects were examined in 1,098 individuals who participated as both children (aged 5-17 years) and adults (aged 24-43 years) in the Bogalusa Heart Study between 1997 and 2002 in Bogalusa, Louisiana. MHO was defined as being in the top body mass index quartile, while low density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, mean arterial pressu

Relationships between gray matter, body mass index, and waist circumference in healthy adults.

Obesity and overweight are often defined by the body mass index (BMI), which associates with metabolic and cardiovascular disease, and possibly with dementia as well as variations in brain volume. However, body fat distribution and abdominal obesity (as measured by waist circumference) is more strongly correlated with cardiovascular and metabolic risk than is BMI. While prior studies have revealed negative associations between gray matter tissue volumes and BMI, the relationship with respect to waist circumference remains largely unexplored. We therefore investigated the effects of both BMI an

Type 2 diabetes in young Indigenous Australians in rural and remote areas: diagnosis, screening, management and prevention.

The burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among Indigenous children and adolescents is much greater than in non-Indigenous young people and appears to be rising, although data on epidemiology and complications are limited. Young Indigenous people living in remote areas appear to be at excess risk of T2DM. Most young Indigenous people with T2DM are asymptomatic at diagnosis and typically have a family history of T2DM, are overweight or obese and may have signs of hyperinsulinism such as acanthosis nigricans. Onset is usually during early adolescence. Barriers to addressing T2DM in young Ind

Asthma and obesity: does weight loss improve asthma control? a systematic review.

AIM AND METHODS: Obesity is a major health problem, and obesity is associated with a high incidence of asthma and poor asthma control. The aim of the present paper is to systematically review the current knowledge of the effect on overall asthma control of weight reduction in overweight and obese adults with asthma. RESULTS: Weight loss in obese individuals with doctor-diagnosed asthma is associated with a 48%-100% remission of asthma symptoms and use of asthma medication. Published studies, furthermore, reveal that weight loss in obese asthmatics improves asthma control, and that especially

Increased levels of COX-2 and prostaglandin E2 contribute to elevated aromatase expression in inflamed breast tissue of obese women.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

UNLABELLED: Obesity is a risk factor for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Estrogen synthesis is catalyzed by aromatase, which is encoded by CYP19. We previously showed that aromatase expression and activity are increased in the breast tissue of overweight and obese women in the presence of characteristic inflammatory foci [crown-like structures of the breast (CLS-B)]. In preclinical studies, proinflammatory prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) is a determinant of aromatase expression. We provide evidence that cyclooxygenase (COX)-2-derived PGE(2) stimulates the cyclic AM

Longitudinal body composition changes due to dialysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Nutritional status remains a powerful predictor of outcome in the dialysis population. High body mass index (BMI) seems protective, but which body compartment (fat or lean mass) confers this protection remains unclear. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: This was a longitudinal study (n = 60; n = 46 completed) examining changes in body composition in incident peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients over 12 months. We measured total body protein (TBP) by in vivo neutron activation, expressed as nitrogen index (NI), and lean body mass (LBM)

Association between infant correlates of impulsivity--surgency (extraversion)--and early infant growth.

Increasing evidence suggests that rapid postnatal weight gain is associated with increased risks of being overweight or obese later in life and of co-morbidities, such as diabetes, the metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. In children as young as two years of age, as well as in adults, an appetitive system-linked impulsivity trait has been demonstrated to be linked with increased overweight, and postulated to act via increased food intake, through greater responsiveness to food and lower self-inhibitory control skills. In this study, we hypothesized that growth in infancy, a critical

Inflammation and increased aromatase expression occur in the breast tissue of obese women with breast cancer.

Obesity is a risk factor for the development of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women and has been associated with an increased risk of recurrence and reduced survival. In humans, obesity causes subclinical inflammation in visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue, characterized by necrotic adipocytes surrounded by macrophages forming crown-like structures (CLS). Recently, we found increased numbers of CLS, activation of the NF-κB transcription factor, and elevated aromatase levels and activity in the mammary glands of obese mice. These preclinical findings raised the

Obesity management--an opportunity for cancer prevention.

There is increasing evidence of an association between obesity and the development, morbidity and mortality of cancers of the colorectum, (post menopausal) breast, endometrium, kidney, pancreas and oesophagus. In addition to obesity per se, waist circumference is now emerging as a clear indicator of disease risk. Weight gain during adult life also appears to increase risk for breast and colon cancers. Major causative factors which are influenced by excess energy storage include hormones involved in metabolic control (insulin and leptin), cell growth (IGF-I and IGF-binding proteins) and reprodu

Reasons for non-return to a pediatric weight management program.

PURPOSE: Obesity in childhood has become a major public health concern because of increasing rates of overweight and obesity. To address this epidemic, effective dietetic interventions must be developed. We examined parent/caregiver and/or patient reasons for not returning for follow-up clinical care in the Alberta Health Services, Edmonton Area's Nutrition Services Pediatric Weight Management Program (NS PWMP) in Edmonton, Alberta. METHODS: A qualitative telephone survey was developed to identify reasons for non-return to the NS PWMP. Face validity was evaluated by five pediatric registered

Appropriate use of stimulation tests and insulin-like growth factor-I in obesity.

Obesity is characterized by abnormal GH secretion, with GH levels reduced up to levels that are comparable to those found in adult patients with organic GH deficiency (GHD). Despite the marked GH insufficiency, obese patients with no evidence of pituitary disease have generally normal levels of total IGF-I but increased levels of free IGF-I. Although the mechanism of the low GH in obesity is not completely understood nor is it clear whether its relationship with visceral adiposity is causal, it is widely accepted that the low GH secretory state in obesity is reversible since it is completely r
