Longitudinal associations between parental rejection, school engagement and gaming disorder symptoms among Chinese adolescents: Disentangling between- and within-person effects.

Gaming disorder is a prevalent behavioral disorder among adolescents, exerting a negative impact on their social development. Parental rejection has been suggested as a core risk factor for gaming disorder symptoms. However, longitudinal research on the direction of this association and the underlying psychological mechanisms remains limited, with most studies failing to disentangle between-person and within-person effects. To address this gap, this study conducted a three-wave longitudinal survey over one year with 1,987 adolescents (56.1% male, Mage = 12.32). Using the Random Intercept Cross

Improving Parent and Therapist Experiences of Codelivering Intensive Upper Limb Interventions for Children With Hemiplegia: A Qualitative Study Using the Theoretical Domains Framework.

BACKGROUND: Partnership working between parents and therapists is a key component of family-centred care (FCC). Such partnerships in paediatric intervention delivery can help achieve required levels of dosage, intensity and embed interventions in the child's everyday activities. This study explores the experience and views of parents and therapists codelivering an intensive upper limb intervention programme for children with hemiplegia, to find ways to enhance successful partnership working. METHODS: Semistructured interviews were conducted with 12 parents and 8 therapists (3 hospital-based a

Maternal Schizophrenia, Skin-to-Skin Contact, and Infant Feeding Initiation.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends mothers and infants be in direct skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth and initiate breastfeeding as soon as possible. Little is known in women with schizophrenia. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study using administrative health data from Ontario, Canada (2012-2014), comparing women with (n = 471) and without schizophrenia (n = 218 435), and their infants, on the primary outcomes of any skin-to-skin contact and opportunity to initiate breastfeeding within the first 2 h after birth. For dyads with available data, seco

Bereaved Parents More Satisfied With the Care Given to Their Child With Severe Spinal Muscular Atrophy Than Nonbereaved.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Children with severe spinal muscular atrophy have complex care needs due to progressive muscle weakness, eventually leading to respiratory failure. To design a care system adapted to families' needs, more knowledge about parents' experience of care and its coordination between settings is required. This study explores (1) whether parents felt that health professionals took every opportunity to help the child feel as good as possible, (2) parents' satisfaction with various care settings, and (3) parents' satisfaction with coordination between settings. METHODS: Data derive

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy with a client with bulimia nervosa.

This case study presents the progress of one patient with bulimia nervosa who was originally very compromised in psychological domains that are the focus of analytic treatment, and includes in-session therapeutic process and a range of outcomes, for example, eating disorder symptoms, attachment status, and reflective functioning. Nested in a study showing more rapid behavioral improvement in subjects receiving cognitive behavior therapy than in subjects receiving psychoanalytic psychotherapy, the case highlights the importance of supplementing RCTs with single case studies and the need of adap

The BDNF Val66Met Polymorphism Interacts with Maternal Parenting Influencing Adolescent Depressive Symptoms: Evidence of Differential Susceptibility Model.

Although depressive symptoms are common during adolescence, little research has examined gene-environment interaction on youth depression. This study chose the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene, tested the interaction between a functional polymorphism resulting amino acid substitution of valine (Val) to methionine (Met) in the proBDNF protein at codon 66 (Val66Met), and maternal parenting on youth depressive symptoms in a sample of 780 community adolescents of Chinese Han ethnicity (aged 11-17, M = 13.6, 51.3 % females). Participants reported their depressive symptoms and perceived

Suicidal tendency in a sample of adolescent outpatients with adjustment disorder: gender differences.

BACKGROUND: Although Adjustment Disorder (AD) is a prevalent diagnosis in adolescent mental health services and linked to suicidal tendency in adolescence, little research exists examining prevalence and gender differences of suicidal symptoms among AD patients using standardized instruments. AIMS: The present study aims to assess the presence of suicidal tendency in a clinical sample of Spanish adolescents with AD analyzing gender differences. METHOD: Ninety-seven adolescents with AD were recruited at a public mental health center and included in the AD sample; they were administered the In

Impact of a manualized multifocal perinatal home-visiting program using psychologists on postnatal depression: the CAPEDP randomized controlled trial.

CONTEXT: Postnatal maternal depression (PND) is a significant risk factor for infant mental health. Although often targeted alongside other factors in perinatal home-visiting programs with vulnerable families, little impact on PND has been observed. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the impact on PND symptomatology of a multifocal perinatal home-visiting intervention using psychologists in a sample of women presenting risk factors associated with infant mental health difficulties. METHODS: 440 primiparous women were recruited at their seventh month of pregnancy. All were future first-time moth

Maternal representations of the infant: associations with infant response to the still face.

Mothers' representations of their infants may influence early development of emotional self-regulation. This study examined the associations between characteristics of mothers' (N = 100) narratives about their 7-month-old infants, maternal depression, and their infants' affect regulation during the Still Face procedure. Findings showed that (1) mothers' representations were linked with individual differences in their infants' behavior across the Still Face procedure, (2) the association between mothers' representations and their infants' behavior was mediated by parenting behavior, and (3) mot

Lifetime exposure to interparental physical and verbal aggression and symptom expression in college students.

This study investigated relations between lifetime exposure to interparental aggression and (1) anxiety, depression, and anger; (2) interpersonal problems; and (3) symptoms of trauma, in a sample of young adults. Participants were 326 (219 female, 107 male) undergraduates from an eastern university. Participants reported on their demographic backgrounds, memories of interparental verbal and physical aggression, past experiences of severe stressors (including child physical and sexual abuse and community violence), and recent symptoms. Results demonstrate that exposure to interparental violence

Breaking bad news to parents with disabled children--a cross-cultural study.

This cross-cultural retrospective study investigates the problems parents experience when told that their child is physically and/or mentally disabled. The authors try to compare, where relevant, some of the responses of the parents from different ethnic groups. The parents of 40 randomly selected coloured, 26 white and 24 black pre-school children who were first seen at the Developmental Assessment Clinic at the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa between January 1989 and December 1990 were asked to participate in this study. The final sample comprised 65 chi

KIF21A-associated peripheral neuropathy defined by impaired binding with TUBB3.

KIF21A encodes a kinesin motor protein associated with isolated congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles (CFEOM), which occurs when the autoinhibitory interaction between its motor and third coiled-coil domains is disrupted. In this study, we describe a female child who is heterozygous for a novel de novo missense variant in KIF21A p.Leu664Pro, located in the second coiled-coil domain that was absent in her unaffected parents and in healthy population cohorts. She presented with progressive peripheral neuropathy, hypoplasia of the corpus callosum and strabismus in the absence of CFEOM. P

Myopia control: Seeing beyond efficacy.

The availability of a range of effective myopia control modalities enables the clinician to exercise judgment when discussing the treatment plan with the patient and their parents. This article outlines important considerations beyond efficacy.Clinically meaningful myopia control may be attained with some spectacle lenses, select soft contact lenses, some concentrations of atropine, and overnight orthokeratology. Given that satisfactory efficacy can be achieved with a range of modalities, other factors should be considered when deciding upon the best intervention for a given child. Four key fa

The Health Effects of Climate Change on Children: Pediatricians Must Be Part of the Solution.

Climate change is already impacting children's health in a variety of ways. Indian children are among the most severely affected; they are experiencing respiratory illnesses from air pollution, heat-related illnesses, malnutrition, vector- and water-borne diseases; and mental health problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder from weather disasters. There is a need to increase awareness and capacity building among paediatricians for understanding the impact of climate change on the health of children and educating parents about preventive measures. Detailed environmental history taking wil

Accidental displacement of primary anterior teeth following extraction of neonatal teeth.

Eruption of the first tooth at 6 months of age is a significant stage in a child's life. However, the presence of a tooth in the oral cavity of a newborn can lead to a lot of delusions. Natal and neonatal teeth are of utmost importance not only to a dentist but also for a pediatrician due to parental anxiety, folklore superstitions, and numerous complications associated with it. The present case report describes a 1.5 cm × 1.5 cm, slow-growing, soft-tissue gingival mass which developed following the extraction of a tooth-like structure in a 4-month-old male patient. Wanting it Too Much: An Inverse Relation Between Social Motivation and Facial Emotion Recognition in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

This study examined social motivation and early-stage face perception as frameworks for understanding impairments in facial emotion recognition (FER) in a well-characterized sample of youth with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Early-stage face perception (N170 event-related potential latency) was recorded while participants completed a standardized FER task, while social motivation was obtained via parent report. Participants with greater social motivation exhibited poorer FER, while those with shorter N170 latencies exhibited better FER for child angry faces stimuli. Social motivation partia

Dissociative symptoms over a year in a sample of sexually abused children.

This study aims to document the evolution of dissociative symptoms over time in preschoolers who disclose sexual abuse. Specifically, this study explores the frequency of dissociative symptoms as a function of child gender. A follow-up evaluation was conducted 1 year after initial disclosure among a sample of 48 sexually abused children, and their results were contrasted with those of a control group composed of 71 non abused children. Children's dissociative symptoms were evaluated by non-offending parents. Data showed that children reporting sexual abuse displayed a greater frequency of diss

[Hereditary pancreatitis in a child].

Hereditary pancreatitis is defined as a family history of two or more relatives with pancreatitis and clinical, biochemical, or radiologic evidence of pancreatitis. This is the fourth family described with hereditary pancreatitis related to mutation c.364C>T (p.R122C) of PRSS1 gene. The index case was a four year old child who had had his first episode of abdominal pain at age three. At that time he was admitted in hospital for two days and he improved with analgesic treatment only. One year later, in a second similar episode, he had been diagnosed with pancreatitis. His father was submitted t
