Association of Exposure to Ambient Air Pollution With Thyroid Function During Pregnancy.

IMPORTANCE: Air pollutants interact with estrogen nuclear receptors, but their effect on thyroid signaling is less clear. Thyroid function is of particular importance for pregnant women because of the thyroid's role in fetal brain development. OBJECTIVE: To determine the short-term association of exposure to air pollution in the first trimester with thyroid function throughout pregnancy. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cohort study, 9931 pregnant women from 4 European cohorts (the Amsterdam Born Children and Their Development Study, the Generation R Study, Infancia y Medio Ambient

Analysis of the effect of PM10 on hand, foot and mouth disease in a basin terrain city.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common childhood infection that causes a substantial disease burden in the Asia-Pacific region. Various climate variables, such as humidity and temperature, have been associated with HFMD. However, few studies have assessed the impact of PM10 on childhood HFMD. This study investigated the association between PM10 and HFMD. We fitted a standard distributed lag non-linear model to investigate the temporal lagged relationship between PM10 and HFMD, and then further assessed whether this relationship varied by gender and pathogen. Between 2011 and 2015, a

Long-term residential exposure to PM2.5, PM10, black carbon, NO2, and ozone and mortality in a Danish cohort.

Air pollutants such as NO2 and PM2.5 have consistently been linked to mortality, but only few previous studies have addressed associations with long-term exposure to black carbon (BC) and ozone (O3). We investigated the association between PM2.5, PM10, BC, NO2, and O3 and mortality in a Danish cohort of 49,564 individuals who were followed up from enrollment in 1993-1997 through 2015. Residential address history from 1979 onwards was combined with air pollution exposure obtained by the state-of-the-art, validated, THOR/AirGIS air pollution modelling system, and information on residential traff

Long- and short-term air pollution exposure and measures of arterial stiffness in the Framingham Heart Study.

BACKGROUND: Studies of air pollution exposure and arterial stiffness have reported inconsistent results and large studies employing the reference standard of arterial stiffness, carotid-femoral pulse-wave velocity (CFPWV), have not been conducted. AIM: To study long-term exposure to ambient fine particles (PM2.5), proximity to roadway, and short-term air pollution exposures in relation to multiple measures of arterial stiffness in the Framingham Heart Study. METHODS: We assessed central arterial stiffness using CFPWV, forward pressure wave amplitude, mean arterial pressure and augmentation i

A general method for evaluating the effects of air pollutants on lung cancer prevalence.

It is widely accepted that some air pollutants are related to lung cancer prevalence. An effective method is proposed to quantitatively evaluate the effects of air pollutants and the interactions between them. The method consisted of three parts: data decomposition, comparable data generation and relationship inference. Firstly, very limited monitoring data published by Geographic Information System were applied to calculate the inhalable air pollution of relatively massive patient samples. Then the investigated area was partitioned into a number of districts, and the comparable data containin

Increasing risk of congenital anomalies associated with seasonal pattern of air pollution: Differences by maternal comorbidities.

To interpret the relationship of the seasonal pattern of air pollution exposure associated with increased risk of congenital anomalies (CA) and the trimester-specific effects. In this work, 55,428 hospital records with 847 doctor-diagnosed CA from July 2013 to December 2016 were collected in Hohhot, China. Maternal exposure to critical air pollutants (SO2, CO, PM10, O3, NO2 and PM2.5) were estimated using an inverse distance weighted (IDW) method on the basis of the ambient air quality monitoring stations. Logistic regression analysis was employed to determine the association of CA (in terms o

NF‑κB inhibitor DHMEQ inhibits titanium dioxide nanoparticle‑induced interleukin‑1β production: Inhibition of the PM2.5‑induced inflammation model.

PM2.5 is a particle with a diameter <2.5 µm that is often involved in air pollution. Nanoparticles <100 nm are thought to invade the trachea and lungs to cause inflammation, possibly through the activation of macrophages. On the other hand, titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles can be used in models of nano‑micro‑sized particles, as one can prepare the particles with such sizes. TiO2 particles are classified into Rutile, Anatase, and Brookite types by their crystal structure. Among them, Anatase‑type TiO2 particles with a primary diameter of 50 nm (A50) were reported to induce interleukin (IL)‑1β

Outdoor air pollution and risk for kidney parenchyma cancer in 14 European cohorts.

Several studies have indicated weakly increased risk for kidney cancer among occupational groups exposed to gasoline vapors, engine exhaust, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and other air pollutants, although not consistently. It was the aim to investigate possible associations between outdoor air pollution at the residence and the incidence of kidney parenchyma cancer in the general population. We used data from 14 European cohorts from the ESCAPE study. We geocoded and assessed air pollution concentrations at baseline addresses by land-use regression models for particulate matter (PM10 , PM2

Exposure to air pollution near a steel plant is associated with reduced heart rate variability: a randomised crossover study.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have shown that as ambient air pollution (AP) increases the risk of cardiovascular mortality also increases. The mechanisms of this effect may be linked to alterations in autonomic nervous system function. We wished to examine the effects of industrial AP on heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of subtle changes in heart rate and rhythm representing autonomic input to the heart. METHODS: Sixty healthy adults were randomized to spend five consecutive 8-h days outdoors in one of two locations: (1) adjacent to a steel plant in the Bayview neighbourhood in S

Short-term air pollution exposure decreases lung function: a repeated measures study in healthy adults.

BACKGROUND: Daily changes in ambient concentrations of particulate matter, nitrogen oxides and ozone are associated with increased cardiopulmonary morbidity and mortality, with the lungs and their function being a vulnerable target. METHODS: To evaluate the association between daily changes in air pollution and lung function in healthy adults we obtained annual lung function measurements from a routine worker health surveillance program not designed for research purposes. Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume in the first second (FEV1), FEV1/FVC and Peak Expiratory flow (PEF)

Death from respiratory diseases and temperature in Shiraz, Iran (2006-2011).

Some studies have suggested that the number of deaths increases as temperatures drops or rises above human thermal comfort zone. The present study was conducted to evaluate the relation between respiratory-related mortality and temperature in Shiraz, Iran. In this ecological study, data about the number of respiratory-related deaths sorted according to age and gender as well as average, minimum, and maximum ambient air temperatures during 2007-2011 were examined. The relationship between air temperature and respiratory-related deaths was calculated by crude and adjusted negative binomial regre

Microbial Community Profile and Water Quality in a Protected Area of the Caatinga Biome.

The Caatinga is a semi-arid biome in northeast Brazil. The Paraguaçú River is located in the Caatinga biome, and part of its course is protected by the National Park of Chapada Diamantina (PNCD). In this study we evaluated the effect of PNCD protection on the water quality and microbial community diversity of this river by analyzing water samples obtained from points located inside and outside the PNCD in both wet and dry seasons. Results of water quality analysis showed higher levels of silicate, ammonia, particulate organic carbon, and nitrite in samples from the unprotected area compared wi

[Hygienic assessment of intraschool environment in rural and urban secondary school institutions].

The purpose of the research is to assess the intra-environment indices in urban and rural secondary schools. In the course of special studies there was given the hygienic assessment of the climate, illumination and air quality of classrooms. In classrooms in rural schools microclimate indices were established to fail to meet hygienic requirements mainly on the temperature and humidity parameters. In rural schools, the temperature was decreased to 16-17 °C in 19.0 ± 8.6% of classrooms, humidity was elevated to 63.1% in 25.7 ± 7.4% of classrooms. Among urban schools the humidity in 49.6 ± 4.4% o

Diesel exhaust particles exacerbate allergic rhinitis in mice by disrupting the nasal epithelial barrier.

BACKGROUND: Diesel exhaust particles (DEP), traffic-related air pollutants, are considered environmental factors that affect allergic diseases adversely. However, the exact effect of DEP on allergic rhinitis (AR) is unclear. OBJECTIVE: We thought to investigate the effect of DEP on seasonal AR using a mouse model. METHODS: Ragweed-pollen-sensitized mice were nasally challenged with ragweed pollen in the presence or absence of DEP. The frequency of sneezing was evaluated immediately after each nasal challenge. The expression of a tight junction (TJ) protein, zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1), was exa

Air Pollution and Lung Function in Dutch Children: A Comparison of Exposure Estimates and Associations Based on Land Use Regression and Dispersion Exposure Modeling Approaches.

BACKGROUND: There is limited knowledge about the extent to which estimates of air pollution effects on health are affected by the choice for a specific exposure model. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the correlation between long-term air pollution exposure estimates using two commonly used exposure modeling techniques [dispersion and land use regression (LUR) models] and, in addition, to compare the estimates of the association between long-term exposure to air pollution and lung function in children using these exposure modeling techniques. METHODS: We used data of 1,058 participants of a

Air pollution and unintentional injury deaths in South Korea.

This study aimed to assess the association between exposure to air pollution and unintentional injury deaths in South Korea. Data regarding all unintentional injury deaths (17,566) in seven metropolitan cities from 2002 to 2008 were collected. Using a time-stratified case-crossover study, conditional logistic regression and subgroup analyses were performed after stratification by age, gender, and season. To evaluate immediate and delayed effects of air pollutants, we used both single lag and distributed lag models. The risk was expressed as an odds ratio (OR) per one interquartile range (IQR)

Association of air pollution with cognitive functions and its modification by APOE gene variants in elderly women.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have shown effects of long-term exposure to air pollution on cardiovascular and respiratory health. However, studies investigating the effects of air pollution on cognition and brain function are limited. We investigated if neurocognitive functions are associated with air pollution exposure and whether apolipoprotein E (ApoE) alleles modify the association of air pollution exposure with cognition. METHODS: We investigated 789 women from the SALIA cohort during the 22-year follow-up examination (2008-2009). Exposure to particulate matter (PM) size fractions
