Nutrition assessment in children with sickle cell disease.

Children with sickle cell disease have decreased height and weight when compared with their peers. Although exact reasons for poor growth have not been established, increased calorie and protein needs and deficiencies in zinc, folic acid, and vitamins A, C, and E may be factors. To determine whether inadequate nutrient intake contributes to this poor growth, we conducted a survey of the nutrition knowledge and practices of families affected by sickle cell disease. Sixty-one patients with a median age of 8 years (range, 13 months to 17 years) participated in the study. Patients with homozygous

Scale-up of the Diactive-1 mHealth program integrating tailored resistance training as an educational strategy for self-management in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes: protocol for an 11-hospital multicenter randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity is strongly recommended for youth with type 1 diabetes, yet many children and adolescents do not meet current exercise guidelines, partly because of fear of hypoglycemia. Resistance training may offer metabolic and musculoskeletal benefits, but its implementation in routine pediatric diabetes care remains limited. Diactive-1 is an mHealth program designed to deliver tailored resistance-training sessions combined with glucose-management educational support. This multicenter trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Diactive-1 (v2.0) in improving hangrip strengt

Shallow Acupuncture for brainstem infarction: a randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Brainstem infarction is a clinically important subtype of posterior circulation infarction and is often associated with disability and poor functional recovery. Disease-specific therapeutic strategies remain limited, and rehabilitation-oriented evidence specifically targeting functional recovery in this population remains insufficient. Acupuncture has been studied and applied as an adjunctive approach for stroke rehabilitation in multiple regions; however, high-quality evidence for its use in brainstem infarction remains scarce. This trial primarily aims to evaluate whether adjunct

Implementation fidelity of a pilot group-based nutrition intervention for pregnant women (Nutri Pou Ti' Moun 2): a mixed methods assessment.

BACKGROUND: In the context of an overseas territory of a high-income country characterized by high fertility rates, cultural diversity, and food insecurity, a small-scale collective intervention with a focus on nutrition was implemented among pregnant women. Inspired by centering-based group care, without the health care component and with a food aid component, the interactive group sessions were co-facilitated by an expert on the session's topic and a peer-facilitator. The objective of the study was to assess the implementation fidelity to determine whether upcoming intervention outcomes are

Evaluating postoperative pneumatic lymphatic drainage following lymphaticovenous anastomosis for secondary lower extremity lymphoedema in Japan (LVA-PLD trial): protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Secondary lower extremity lymphoedema is a chronic progressive condition that frequently develops after cancer treatment and results in persistent swelling, recurrent cellulitis and impaired quality of life. Lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA) is an established physiological microsurgical treatment; however, postoperative outcomes vary and evidence-based adjunctive postoperative management remains limited. A novel pneumatic lymphatic drainage (PLD) system has been developed to deliver anatomically directed, pathway-aligned mechanical stimulation that mimics manual lymphatic draina

Aerobic dance during chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer with cognitive impairment (ADANC): protocol for an assessor-blinded randomised clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Therapeutic exercise has been used to improve cancer-related dysfunction. Recent studies suggest that exercise after chemotherapy can improve cancer-related cognitive impairment. However, the effect of exercise during chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer remains unclear. Aerobic dance is a comprehensive form of aerobic exercise which may be more easily accepted by female patients. The Aerobic Dance Against NeuroCognitive decline (ADANC) trial is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of aerobic dance during chemotherapy on breast cancer-related cognitive impairment. It aim

Clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the rehabilitation enablement in chronic heart failure facilitated self-care rehabilitation intervention for people with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and their caregivers: rationale and protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial - REACH-HFpEF trial.

INTRODUCTION: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is common and causes functional limitation, poor health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and impairs prognosis. Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation is a promising intervention for HFpEF, but there is currently insufficient evidence to support its routine use. This trial will assess the clinical and cost-effectiveness of a 12-week health professional-facilitated, home-based rehabilitation intervention (REACH-HF), in people with HFpEF, for participants and their caregivers. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: REACH-HFpEF is a parallel two

Does luteal phase support in MOH-IUI treatment improve cumulative live birth rates in couples with unexplained subfertility? Study protocol of the LUMO study: a centre, randomised, double-blind, controlled trial with cost-effectiveness analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Couples diagnosed with unexplained subfertility are advised to start mild ovarian hyperstimulation and intrauterine insemination (MOH-IUI) as a primary treatment. Natural feedback mechanisms and hormone release are affected by artificially stimulated cycles and induced ovulation. Additional luteal support could positively affect progesterone patterns in the luteal phase. The LUMO study evaluates whether the addition of exogenous progesterone in the luteal phase following MOH-IUI treatment cycle will improve pregnancy and live birth rates. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A multicentre rand

Effects on recurrence and quAlity-of-life of iliac vein Stenting angioplasTy for patients with Varicose veins combined with severE Iliac veiN compression: a protocol for a prospective, multicentre, randomised clinical trial (EAST-VEIN trial).

INTRODUCTION: Both varicose veins (VV) and iliac vein compression syndrome (IVCS) can cause skin damage and functional impairment in the lower extremities, and these issues often coexist. However, the question of whether IVCS exacerbates VV progression and leads to differences in the surgical outcomes of therapy for VV remains unanswered. Therefore, no high-level evidence-based medical data is available to support the concomitant use of iliac vein stenting in patients with VV and severe IVCS, and treatment protocols vary significantly among different centres. This study will investigate the ef

Whole-body electrical stimulation in patients undergoing lung transplantation in Southern Brazil: study protocol of a single-center randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Lung transplantation (LT) is indicated to increase the survival and quality of life of people with advanced lung disease. However, these patients often experience muscle mass loss and reduced physical capacity due to immobility and disease-related limitations. Whole-body electrical muscle stimulation (WB-EMS) emerges as an alternative to optimize rehabilitation. This study aims to evaluate the effects of WB-EMS combined with conventional physical therapy compared to physical therapy alone on the muscle strength of hospitalized patients after LT. METHODS: This is a single-center, r

Impact of exercise interventions on cardiotoxicity in patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy: a study protocol for a quasi-randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Agents used in antitumour therapy have toxic effects on the cardiovascular system of breast cancer (BC) patients, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease, which has become the most common non-cancer cause of death in BC patients. Exercise can effectively prevent or reduce the occurrence of cardiotoxicity, however, most BC patients have low levels of physical activity. The Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) model has been successfully applied to encourage patients to adhere to physical exercise. This study aims to explore the impact of exercise interventions based on the

Modified tai chi movement training based on sEMG and movement analysis on improving upper extremities motor function: a protocol for a clinical randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke survivors often face motor dysfunction, increasing fall risk. Lower extremity muscle weakness is a key factor affecting walking ability. Tai chi (TC) has been shown to improve muscle strength and mobility in patients with stroke more effectively than traditional walking training. However, existing TC programmes for stroke rehabilitation are often too simplified and fail to fully use TC's benefits. Additionally, subjective assessment scales are time-consuming and prone to bias. This study proposes integrating TC's early movement features with neurodevelopmental therapy, usi

Boosting open-label placebo effects in acute induced pain in healthy adults (BOLPAP-study): study protocol of a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Pain is a highly prevalent symptom in the hospital setting, but treatment options remain limited. Harnessing the placebo effect in an ethical manner could provide a new possibility to reduce pain in clinical practice. So called open-label placebos (OLP) have been shown to elicit significant effects in reducing acute pain. But, before implementation, more knowledge concerning the properties of OLPs is needed. This study aims to assess the duration of analgesic effects from OLP and to determine the possibility of boosting such effects. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is the protocol of

Baby HABIT-ILE intervention: study protocol of a randomised controlled trial in infants aged 6-18 months with unilateral cerebral palsy.

INTRODUCTION: Research using animal models suggests that intensive motor skill training in infants under 2 years old with cerebral palsy (CP) may significantly reduce, or even prevent, maladaptive neuroplastic changes following brain injury. However, the effects of such interventions to tentatively prevent secondary neurological damages have never been assessed in infants with CP. This study aims to determine the effect of the baby Hand and Arm Bimanual Intensive Therapy Including Lower Extremities (baby HABIT-ILE) in infants with unilateral CP, compared with a control intervention. Efficiency and effectiveness of intensive multidisciplinary follow-up of patients with stroke/TIA or myocardial infarction compared to usual monitoring: protocol of a pragmatic randomised clinical trial. DiVa (Dijon vascular) study.

INTRODUCTION: The ongoing ageing population is associated with an increase in the number of patients suffering a stroke, transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or myocardial infarction (MI). In these patients, implementing secondary prevention is a critical challenge and new strategies need to be developed to close the gap between clinical practice and evidence-based recommendations. We describe the protocol of a randomised clinical trial that aims to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of an intensive multidisciplinary follow-up of patients compared with standard care. METHODS AND ANALYSIS:

Effectiveness of an online management platform (Joint Cloud) versus standard process for patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty: study protocol for a prospective randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the main causes of mobility impairment in the elderly worldwide. Therefore, total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is often performed and is one of the most successful surgery and has resulted in substantial quality-of-life gains for people with end-stage arthritis. There is still room for improvement in the standard treatment process in the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative period of TKA. Telerehabilitation has the potential to become a positive alternative to face-to-face rehabilitation nowadays. But it remains unclear how well telemedicine int

Effectiveness of self-managed continuous monitoring for maintaining high-quality early essential newborn care compared to supervision visit in Lao PDR: a cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Thousands of neonatal deaths are expected to be averted by introducing the Early Essential Newborn Care (EENC) in the Western Pacific Region. In Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), the government adopted the EENC programme and expanded it to district hospitals. With the expansion, maintaining the quality of EENC has become difficult for the government. METHODS: A cluster randomised controlled trial with four strata based on province and history of EENC coaching was implemented to evaluate the effectiveness of self-managed continuous monitoring compared with supervisory vis
