Association among oral health parameters, periodontitis, and its treatment and mortality in patients undergoing hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic periodontitis (CP) is a continuous, reversible source of inflammation with a potential impact on mortality in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). This study investigates the impact of oral health indicators, CP, and its treatment on survival rates in a group of patients undergoing HD. METHODS: Clinically stable patients undergoing HD were referred for a dental examination. All patients were prospectively followed in the dialysis clinic, and all-cause mortality was recorded. Three groups of patients were analyzed: those who received CP treatment, those who did not, and p

Fusobacterium nucleatum and Tannerella forsythia induce synergistic alveolar bone loss in a mouse periodontitis model.

Tannerella forsythia is strongly associated with chronic periodontitis, an inflammatory disease of the tooth-supporting tissues, leading to tooth loss. Fusobacterium nucleatum, an opportunistic pathogen, is thought to promote dental plaque formation by serving as a bridge bacterium between early- and late-colonizing species of the oral cavity. Previous studies have shown that F. nucleatum species synergize with T. forsythia during biofilm formation and pathogenesis. In the present study, we showed that coinfection of F. nucleatum and T. forsythia is more potent than infection with either speci

Human β-defensin 2 and protease activated receptor-2 expression in patients with chronic periodontitis.

OBJECTIVE: Some previous studies have shown that gingipains, trypsin-like proteases produced by Porphyromonas gingivalis, up-regulate human β defensin-2 (HBD-2) mRNA expression through protease-activated receptor-2 (PAR(2)) in gingival epithelial cells. This study aimed at investigating salivary HBD-2 levels and crevicular PAR(2) mRNA expression in human chronic periodontitis and evaluating whether periodontal treatment affected this process. METHODS: Salivary and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) samples were collected from periodontally healthy (control) and chronic periodontitis patients at

Anti-inflammatory effect of the endocannabinoid anandamide in experimental periodontitis and stress in the rat.

OBJECTIVE: Periodontitis is an infectious disease leading to inflammation and destruction of tissue surrounding and supporting the tooth. The progress of the inflammatory response depends on the host's immune system and risk factors such as stress. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of the endocannabinoid anandamide (AEA) in experimental periodontitis with restraint stress, since the endocannabinoid system is known to modulate the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis as well as immune functions and has been found in human gingival tissues. METHODS: Experimental periodontit

Local complement-targeted intervention in periodontitis: proof-of-concept using a C5a receptor (CD88) antagonist.

When excessively activated or deregulated, complement becomes a major link between infection and inflammatory pathology including periodontitis. This oral inflammatory disease is associated with a dysbiotic microbiota, leads to the destruction of bone and other tooth-supporting structures, and exerts an adverse impact on systemic health. We have previously shown that mice deficient either in complement C5a receptor (C5aR; CD88) or TLR2 are highly and similarly resistant to periodontitis, suggesting that a cross-talk between the two receptors may be involved in the disease process. In this pape

A randomized, double-masked clinical trial comparing four periodontitis treatment strategies: 1-year clinical results.

BACKGROUND: The benefit of full-mouth disinfection (FDIS) over traditional scaling and root planing (SRP) remains equivocal, and it is not known whether the use of adjunctive antibiotics may enhance the effect of FDIS. The aim of the present study is to test the hypothesis that there is no difference in the 1-year clinical outcome of therapy among groups of patients treated with conventional SRP performed over 2 to 3 weeks, or same-day FDIS, with or without adjunctive metronidazole. METHODS: A total of 184 patients with moderate-to-severe periodontitis were randomly allocated to one of four t

[Risks and side effects of periodontitis therapy. Focus on restorative possibilities for improving esthetic defects].

BACKGROUND: Keratocystic odontogenic tumours (KCOT) are benign neoplasia of dentogenic origin and have a high relapse rate. Various invasive treatment methods (decompression, marsupialisation, enucleation, enucleation with adjunctive therapy such as scraping out of the bone cavity, Carnoy's solution or cryotherapy, mandibular resection) have been described for the treatment of KCOT. There is no common opinion on the best kind of treatment. Most of the articles in the literature report on a follow-up period of 5-7 years, but relapses have been described even after longer periods of time. This a

Increased salivary levels of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine may be a marker for disease activity for periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) is commonly used as a marker to evaluate oxidative DNA damage in disorders including chronic inflammatory diseases such as inflammatory periodontal pathologies. In the current study we hypothesized that the level of 8-OHdG in saliva increases by the periodontal destruction severity determined by clinical parameters as clinical attachment level (CAL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sum of 60 age gender balanced; chronic periodontitis (CP) (n=20), chronic gingivitis (CG) (n=20) and healthy (H) (n=20) individuals.
