Traumatic Brain Injury and Risk of Schizophrenia and Other Non-mood Psychotic Disorders: Findings From a Large Inpatient Database in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is linked with an increased risk of schizophrenia and other non-mood psychotic disorders (psychotic disorders), but the prevalence and contributing factors of these psychiatric conditions post-TBI remain unclear. This study explores this link to identify key risk factors in TBI patients. METHODS: We used the 2017 National Inpatient Sample dataset. Patients with a history of TBI (n = 26 187) were identified and matched 1:1 by age and gender to controls without TBI (n = 26 187). We compared clinical and demographic characteristics between groups. The ass

Experimental Research on Schema Modes: Guidelines and Research Agenda.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Schema therapy is an evidence-based treatment for personality disorders (PDs), with 'schema modes' being a core theoretical and clinical concept. Despite their centrality, empirical research into the mechanisms of schema mode activation remains limited. This paper reviews the available research on schema mode activation and provides methodological guidelines and a research agenda to stimulate experimental research on schema modes. RECENT FINDINGS: We identified five published studies that experimentally induced schema modes using a variety of procedures (e.g., stress interv

The Societal Response to Psychopathy in the Community.

The harm usually associated with psychopathy requires therapeutically, legally, and ethically satisfactory solutions. Scholars from different fields have, thus, examined whether empirical evidence shows that individuals with psychopathic traits satisfy concepts, such as responsibility, mental disorder, or disability, that have specific legal or ethical implications. The present paper considers the less discussed issue of whether psychopathy is a disability. As it has been shown for the cases of the responsibility and mental disorder status of psychopathic individuals, we argue that it is undec

[Systematic review of evidence on the association between personality and tinnitus].

INTRODUCTION: The scientific literature demonstrates that personality traits are associated with the individual's adaptation to chronic diseases, and can be an important factor in the etiology and prognosis of physical illness. Some studies indicate that personality characteristics may influence the perception of tinnitus. OBJECTIVE: To assess the scientific evidence of the association between tinnitus and personality. METHODS: A systematic review of the following databases: PubMed, SciELO, LILACS, and Web of Knowledge. Only studies of patients older than 18 years published in English, Portu

Predictors of Child-to-Parent Violence in Adolescence: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Child-to-parent violence (CPV) refers to persistent physical, psychological, or financial violence perpetrated by children or adolescents against their parents. Although CPV has attracted increasing academic and professional attention in recent years, evidence regarding its predictors remains fragmented. This systematic literature review aimed to synthesize empirical evidence on the predictors of adolescent CPV, with a particular focus on developmental victimization, personality traits, and psychopathology. Violence refers to the intentional use of physical, psychologica

Ten-year follow-up study of personality traits in adults with intact and restored dentitions.

The personality traits of 69 of a sample of 70 adolescents aged 25-26 years were re-examined after 10 years by means of a personality inventory (KSP). A total of 11 subjects had intact dentitions (group I), while 18 subjects had had some fillings in their teeth since the first examination (group FI), and 40 subjects had restored dentitions from the starting-point (group F). The subjects with fillings 10 years ago had significantly higher scores in two of the anxiety variables--somatic anxiety and muscular tension--and in the hostility variable, suspicion, than did those without the fillings. [Addressing dual pathology through integrative models from a gender perspective].

Currently, substance use and mental health problems are on the rise. Gender-integrated treatments for dual pathology exist, although no specific therapies have been found for major depressive disorder co-occurring with alcoholism in women. Women initiate alcohol consumption later than men but experience a faster escalation of addiction, although they seek help earlier. Among women, depressive disorder, somatomorphic disorder, bipolar disorder, dysthymia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and cluster C personality disorders are more prevalent. Alcohol is the primary substance consumed by women. A

Conflation between self-report and neurocognitive assessments of cognitive flexibility: a critical review of the Jingle Fallacy.

Cognitive flexibility is a widely studied construct and is considered an important treatment target for several psychological disorders. The convergence of several independent fields of research has led to assumptions about the assessment of cognitive flexibility - assumptions that are not empirically supported and often conflate different notions of flexibility. This critical review discusses how the conflation of self-report and neurocognitive assessments has seemingly arisen from literature on eating disorders. We describe how seminal early observations of "inflexible" personality character

External Capsular Hyperintensities in Wilson's Disease Presenting with Refractory Status Epilepticus.

Wilson's disease is a genetic disorder characterized by abnormal accumulation of copper in the brain, liver, eye, and kidney. Various neuropsychiatric manifestations such as dystonia, parkinsonism, choreoathetosis, tremor, ataxia, personality disorders, mood changes, psychosis, cognitive abnormalities, sleep disorders, dystonia, tremor, ataxia, and seizures are known to occur in Wilson's disease. Status epilepticus is a very rare presentation of this disease. Here, we present a case of Wilson's disease occurring in an adolescent, who presented with refractory convulsive status epilepticus. Analyzing the link between anxiety and eating behavior as a potential pathway to eating-related health outcomes.

Anxiety is a widespread phenomenon that affects various behaviors. We want to analyze in how far anxiety is connected to eating behaviors since this is one potential pathway to understanding eating-related health outcomes like obesity or eating disorders. We used data from the population-based LIFE-Adult-Study (n = 5019) to analyze the connection between anxiety (GAD-7) and the three dimensions of eating behaviors (FEV)-Cognitive Restraint, Disinhibition, and Hunger-while controlling for sociodemographic variables, smoking, physical activity, personality, and social support. A systematic review and meta-analysis of the Unified Protocol as a transdiagnostic emotion regulation based intervention.

Recent advances in clinical practice emphasise transdiagnostic interventions as an effective alternative to single disorder approaches. This current systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the treatment efficacy of the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP) across internalising disorders, as an emotion regulation (ER) based intervention program. Across 15 studies and 1244 participants, large effect size reductions were found across symptoms of anxiety, depression, generalised anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder with/without

Psychosocial aspects of andrologic disease.

This article reviews the research relating to the psychosocial aspects of andrologic disease, focusing on infertility, hypospadias, and erectile dysfunction because these diseases draw out the key areas of psychosocial interest. This is the case with the development of men who have andrologic disease and the problems they face developing relationships. Psychosocial issues are often about the perceptions that men and women have regarding androgenic disorders rather than the disorder itself. Psychological problems include anxiety, depression, and social phobias. In more serious cases, psychologi

[Orbitofrontal syndrome in psychiatry].

Orbitofrontal syndrome is a variant of frontal lobe syndrome in which behavioural disturbances are prevailing. It results from bilateral lesions of the orbitofrontal cortex and the medial face of frontal lobe. Patients present disorganized hyperactivity. They are distractable, impulsive, euphoric and unable to abide by social rules. They often have instinctive disinhibition (hypersexuality, hyperphagia and urinary behaviour disorders). In spite of severe behavioural disturbances cognitive functions are often intact so that orbitofrontal syndrome may be confounded with two psychiatric disorders

Taking chances: problem gamblers and mental health disorders--results from the St. Louis Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study.

OBJECTIVES: This study determined prevalence estimates of problem gambling and relationships to other psychiatric and substance use disorders. METHODS: In 1981, the Diagnostic Interview Schedule was used to collect epidemiological information on problem gambling and other disorders from 3004 adults in St. Louis, Mo. RESULTS: The lifetime prevalence of pathological gambling was 0.9%; 46% of those surveyed gambled recreationally. Problem gamblers (those reporting at least one gambling-related problem) were 9.2% of the sample and were predominately White (69%), male (78.2%), and young than nong

[Results of long-term observation (3-11 years) of patients with dual diagnosis: body dysmorphic disorder and delusional disorder, somatic type].

This work presents results of a retrospective and prospective research of 15 persons with a double diagnosis: body dysmorphic disorder, and delusional disorder, somatic type. It was established that these disorders starting in adolescence, occurred in persons who earlier had traits of avoidant and obsessive-compulsive personality or social phobia. In most subjects with dysmorphophobia there was comorbidity of dysthymia or major depression. An improvement in the state of these patients, most often after implementation of complex therapeutic measures: psychotherapy as well as pharmacotherapy wit

Low platelet monoamine oxidase activity in pathological gambling.

Decreased platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity has been reported in association with sensation-seeking personality type and in some mental disorders associated with a lack of impulse control. Pathological gambling itself has been related with both sensation-seeking and reduced impulse control. Platelet MAO activity was investigated in 15 DSM-III-R pathological gamblers from our outpatient clinic. Gamblers had a significantly lower platelet MAO activity than a group of 25 healthy controls. The range of MAO levels in gamblers was also significantly shorter than in controls. In controls, pla

Clinical presentation of depression in the elderly.

Depressive syndromes and dementia are the most frequent psychiatric disorders in the elderly. Reactive depressive syndromes can be associated with the restriction of social competence due to increasing multi-morbidity, loneliness, social isolation, the consequences of retirement, interpersonal conflicts, and the loss of partners or close relatives. Endogenous depressive syndromes in the elderly are frequently combined with diffuse and changing somatic complaints, psychomotor restlessness and agitation. Furthermore, depressive syndromes can be caused by somatic illness, degenerative disorders,

Psychiatric diagnoses of maltreated children: preliminary findings.

The study sample consists of 96 children (61 maltreated, 35 controls) between 5 and 10 years of age. The two groups of subjects were compared on diagnoses as determined by the administration of the Diagnostic Interview for Children and Adolescents, Revised 6th Version (DICA-6-R) as well as clinical DSM-III-R diagnoses. Children who had suffered maltreatment exhibited significantly greater incidences of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder diagnoses than did controls, on both child and parent DICA interviews.
