Inquiry : a journal of medical care organization, provision and financing2026eng
BackgroundThe Korean government allowed for the temporary provision of non-face-to-face healthcare services (telemedicine) from 24 February 2020, due to the widespread outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). To provide further evidence to inform and support future policies on telemedicine, we compared its utilization rates for hypertension (HTN) treatments both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.MethodsThis quasi-experimental study utilized 2019-2020 claims data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service to evaluate the numbers of outpatient visits for HTN by patients with

AIMS: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often face challenges in maintaining adequate oral hygiene due to motor, sensory, and behavioral limitations. Toothbrushes with customized handles have been proposed as assistive devices, but clinical evidence of their effectiveness remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of customized-handle toothbrushes compared with conventional toothbrushes in reducing dental plaque in these populations.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A non-randomized clinical trial was conducted with 28 individuals diagnosed with D

BACKGROUND: While limited research suggests people with spinal cord injury (SCI) experience elevated rates of interpersonal violence (IPV), no known studies have specifically explored the personal narratives of individuals with SCI regarding the nature and dynamics of experiences with IPV following their injury.
OBJECTIVE: To conduct the first known qualitative exploration of the nature and dynamics of post-injury IPV experience in a sample of community-living men and women with SCI.
METHOD: We co-conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews via ZOOM with 21 individuals from across the Uni

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual disabilities living in supported housing facilities are vulnerable to developing obesity and malnutrition. It is therefore essential to strengthen staff competence in providing nutrition and dietary support for people with intellectual disabilities, with particular attention to balancing the provision of appropriate health care with the promotion of residents’ autonomy and self-determination. The aim of this study was to explore social care service providers’ experiences with a teaching and learning approach that combines the use of 360° virtual reality vid

Students classified under Other Health Impairment (OHI), a category that includes Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), are frequently disciplined in school settings despite ADHD being classified as a neurodevelopmental rather than a behavioral disorder. This study examined patterns of disciplinary removal among students served under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Part B, focusing on comparisons between OHI and Emotional Disturbance (ED). Using publicly available IDEA Part B discipline data, a descriptive longitudinal analysis was conducted across three acad

BACKGROUND: Stop the Bleed (STB) is a program that teaches hemorrhage control techniques to the public. While STB has been taught to 4 million people, it is only widely available in English and Spanish languages. Therefore, vulnerable populations with other language preferences may miss this life-saving training. The purpose of our study is to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of adapting STB for the deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) community.
METHODS: In conjunction with the staff of the Georgia Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, a needs assessment was conducted to identify nec

PURPOSE: We aimed to explore the rates of bound morpheme production at two time points (T1 and T2) by deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) preschoolers and their typically hearing (TH) peers. We further sought to describe the rates and types of unscorable responses children produced.
METHOD: Sixty-four DHH preschoolers and 66 TH preschoolers participated as part of a larger, ongoing longitudinal study. Children were given the Test of Early Grammatical Impairment (TEGI) screener, which elicits productions of the third-person singular present and past tense. TEGI screeners were given twice, spaced 6

Young adults with anxiety and depression often experience mental health-related disabilities (MHRD) that impair social, academic, occupational and daily functioning. These impairments, while significant, are frequently invisible, episodic, or lacking formal recognition; factors that limit their acknowledgment within healthcare systems designed to respond to more visible or diagnostically stable conditions. As MHRD rates among young adults rise there remains limited evidence on how functional impairments shape access to care. This scoping review examines peer-reviewed research on healthcare acc

BACKGROUND: Oral health is an essential component of overall well-being, significantly impacting the quality of life. Individuals with disabilities, including those with intellectual disabilities, are at a higher risk for oral health issues due to poor oral hygiene, limited dexterity, and barriers to accessing dental care. The Special Olympics Special Smiles (SOSS) program aims to improve the oral health of Special Olympics athletes by providing screening and awareness programs. However, there is limited data on the oral health status of individuals participating in Special Olympics Bharat (SO

Changing late-life disability and care patterns that may accompany population aging have profound consequences for the nation's health and related public policies. Drawing on two cross-sectional rounds of the National Health and Aging Trends Study, we examined trends among US adults ages 65 and older in 2011, when the oldest members of the baby-boom generation turned age 65, and in 2022, when about half of the generation was ages 65-74. We found increases in the percentage of adults ages 65-74 who reported activity limitations, receiving paid care in the community, and having unmet care needs.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the hierarchical structure and supply priorities of long-term care (LTC) needs among disabled older adults is essential for responsive care systems. However, existing assessments fail to translate findings into actionable resource allocation strategies, leaving nursing managers without evidence-based guidance for prioritization.
AIM: To identify the hierarchical structure of LTC service demands among disabled older adults using the Kano model and to establish an evidence-based supply priority order through integrated entropy-weighted TOPSIS analysis, thereby providin

This study compared exercise factors among 14 adults with visual impairments in Brazil and the United States. Using inductive reflexive thematic analysis mapped onto the capability, opportunity, motivation-behavior model, findings revealed shared initial health motivations but divergent maintenance drivers. Brazilian participants were motivated by social identity and community, whereas Americans prioritized autonomy. Due to inaccessible community fitness spaces, participants adopted distinct coping strategies: American participants typically exercised at home to ensure consistency (often sacri

Human-machine interface (HMI) systems are increasingly utilized to develop assistive technologies for individuals with disabilities and older adults. This study proposes two HMI systems using piezoelectric sensors to detect facial muscle activations from eye and tongue movements, and accelerometers to monitor head movements. This system enables hands-free wheelchair control for those with physical disabilities and speech impairments. A prototype wearable sensing device was also designed and implemented. Four commands can be generated using each sensor to steer the wheelchair. We conducted test

This study examines how individuals with acquired spinal cord injury maintain, contest, and dissolve boundaries within their peer community, with a particular focus on the roles of distancing and discrediting others. Carrying out a 26-month ethnography generated data from participant observation, interviews, social media, crowdfunding initiatives, news stories, government policies, reports, and related research. Drawing on theories of symbolic boundaries and stigmas, we theorised how the comparative context influences how individuals can be included or excluded from peer groups. We found that

This study used longitudinal data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS; n = 7,900, aged ≥60) to examine the mechanisms linking the number of chronic diseases with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in older Chinese adults. Chronic diseases were significantly associated with reduced HRQoL (βtotal = -0.01, 95% CI: -0.011, -0.009). Disability and depressive symptoms jointly mediated 69% of this effect through independent (βdisability = -0.0027, 95% CI: -0.0031, -0.0022; βdepressive = -0.0034, 95% CI: -0.0039, -0.003) and chain mediation (βdisability-depressive = -0.
