Using community health workers to refer pregnant women and young children to health care facilities in rural West Bengal, India: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Community health workers (CHWs) have been placed in many rural areas in India to increase villagers' connections to basic preventive health care. In this study, we describe how pregnant women and mothers of young children react when CHWs inform them that they, or their child, are at high risk of pregnancy-related complications or early childhood developmental delays, and further screening and health care from a physician is recommended. METHODS: In this longitudinal study in rural villages in West Bengal, India, pregnant mothers, as well as mothers of children aged 12-24 months, w

Successful task shifting: a mixed-methods cross-sectional evaluation of an emergency obstetric care program to increase access to cesarean sections in rural Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Direct obstetric causes of maternal mortality account for approximately 86% of all global maternal deaths. In Nepal, 12% of all deaths of women of reproductive age are due to preventable obstetric complications in significant part due to the limited distribution and skill level of human resources. OBJECTIVES: To address this, the Advanced Skilled Birth Attendant (ASBA) task-shifting initiative was developed to train medical officers to perform Cesarean sections (CSs) and manage obstetric emergencies in Nepal. Until now, there has been limited study of the program's efficacy. METH

Disparities and barriers to the access of biologics in moderate-to-severe adult psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory skin disorder that is associated with substantial physical and psychosocial comorbidity. Although biologic agents have offered transformative therapeutic advantages to those unresponsive to traditional treatments, data from recent literature indicate significant undertreatment of certain populations, highlighting potential barriers to access. This review aims to comprehensively elucidate barriers to biological therapy, addressing a recognized gap in the current literature. A search was conducted using MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science to investi

A rapid qualitative assessment of oral cholera vaccine anticipated acceptability in a context of resistance towards cholera intervention in Nampula, Mozambique.

INTRODUCTION: While planning an immunization campaign in settings where public health interventions are subject to politically motivated resistance, designing context-based social mobilization strategies is critical to ensure community acceptability. In preparation for an Oral Cholera Vaccine campaign implemented in Nampula, Mozambique, in November 2016, we assessed potential barriers and levers for vaccine acceptability. METHODS: Questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions, as well as observations, were conducted before the campaign. The participants included central and

Health Beliefs and Breast Cancer Screening in Rural Appalachia: An Evaluation of the Health Belief Model.

PURPOSE: This study explored the role of the Health Belief Model in predicting breast cancer screening among women in rural Appalachia. Health beliefs (perceived susceptibility to breast cancer, severity of breast cancer, and benefits and barriers to screening) were used to predict health behavior (mammogram frequency). METHOD: A total of 170 women aged 18-78 were recruited at a free health clinic in central Appalachia. Women completed surveys that assessed demographic characteristics, mammogram frequency, and perceived susceptibility, severity, and benefits and barriers to mammography. FIND

[Adaptation to climate change-associated health risks as a task of environmental health protection. Analysis of a nationwide investigation by the Federal Environment Agency].

The German Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change (DAS, 2008) identified 'human health' as an important sector with a need for adaptation. In line with the DAS, the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) and the Robert Koch Institute jointly elaborated guidelines for decision makers and stakeholders. Building on these, in 2013/2014, UBA has conducted a nationwide survey, collecting data on completed, ongoing and planned adaptation measures. UBA also analysed 32 adaptation strategies of the Federal States. Selected best practice examples of potential health-related prevention and adaptation measur

Peer support in health care and prevention: cultural, organizational, and dissemination issues.

As reviewed in the article by Perry and colleagues (2014) in this volume, ample evidence has documented the contributions of peer support (PS) to health, health care, and prevention. Building on that foundation, this article discusses characteristics, contexts, and dissemination of PS, including (a) fundamental aspects of the social support that is often central to it; (b) cultural influences and ways PS can be tailored to specific groups; (c) key features of PS and the importance of ongoing support and backup of peer supporters and other factors related to its success; (d) directions in which

Student-led rural health fairs: attempting to improve medical education and access to health care.

OBJECTIVES: Residents of rural communities, especially in the Southeast, have decreased access to health care. Ensuring medical students receive adequate exposure to their issues is complicated by the urban location of most schools. We describe health fairs conducted in rural communities to suggest how having medical students use screening tools can identify patients with risk factors for disease which can offer students the opportunity to learn about rural health issues through patient counseling. METHODS: The Mitchell Wolfson Sr. Department of Community Service, a University of Miami Miller

Progress towards the eradication of poliomyelitis globally and in Africa, January 2000.

Led by an international partnership including Rotary International, the WHO, UNICEF and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the USA, the global initiative to eradicate poliomyelitis has made remarkable progress since its beginning in 1988. The number of polio cases has decreased from an estimated 350,000 cases in 1988 to just over 5,000 reported cases in 1999. Following successful eradication from the WHO Region of the America's, certified as polio-free in 1994, wild poliovirus was last reported from the Western Pacific Region (including China) in 1997, and from the European Regi
