Encoding order and developmental dyslexia: a family of skills predicting different orthographic components.

We investigated order encoding in developmental dyslexia using a task that presented nonalphanumeric visual characters either simultaneously or sequentially--to tap spatial and temporal order encoding, respectively--and asked participants to reproduce their order. Dyslexic participants performed poorly in the sequential condition, but normally in the simultaneous condition, except for positions most susceptible to interference. These results are novel in demonstrating a selective difficulty with temporal order encoding in a dyslexic group. We also tested the associations between our order reco

The relationship between sympathetic nervous activity and cerebral hemodynamics and oxygenation: a study using skin conductance measurement and functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

Simultaneous measurement of cortical and peripheral affective processing is relevant in many neuroscientific research fields. The aim was to investigate the influence of different affective task components on the coherence between cortical hemodynamic signals and peripheral autonomic skin potential signals. Seventeen healthy subjects performed four tasks, i.e. a finger-tapping task, a hyperventilation task, a working memory task and a risk-taking task. Cortical hemodynamic responses were measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Peripheral skin conductance responses (SCRs)

Changes in the frequency of benign focal spikes accompany changes in central information processing speed: a prospective 2-year follow-up study.

We prospectively examined whether changes in the frequency of benign focal spikes accompany changes in cognition. Twenty-six children with benign focal spikes (19 with Rolandic epilepsy) and learning difficulties were examined with repeated 24-hour EEG recordings, three cognitive tests on central information processing speed (CIPS), and questionnaires on cognition and behavior at baseline, 6months, and 2years. Antiepileptic drug changes were allowed when estimated necessary by the treating physician. At baseline, a lower CIPS was correlated with a higher frequency of diurnal interictal epilept

Dissociations of action means and outcome processing in left-hemisphere stroke.

Previous evidence suggests that distinct fronto-parietal regions may be involved in representing action kinematics (means) and action results (outcome) during action observation. However, the evidence is contradictory with respect to the precise regions that are critical for each type of representation. Additionally unknown is the degree to which ability to detect action means and outcome during observation is related to action production performance. We used a behavioral task to evaluate the ability of healthy and left-hemisphere stroke participants to detect differences between pairs of vide

White matter organization in relation to upper limb motor control in healthy subjects: exploring the added value of diffusion kurtosis imaging.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) characterizes white matter (WM) microstructure. In many brain regions, however, the assumption that the diffusion probability distribution is Gaussian may be invalid, even at low b values. Recently, diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) was suggested to more accurately estimate this distribution. We explored the added value of DKI in studying the relation between WM microstructure and upper limb coordination in healthy controls (N = 24). Performance on a complex bimanual tracking task was studied with respect to the conventional DTI measures (DKI or DTI derived) and k

Cognitive deficits in patients with low and high grade gliomas.

AIM: Studies in the literature with specific information concerning the neuropsychological alterations in patients with high and low grade gliomas are poor. The aim of the present study was to investigate and compare the cognitive functioning in patients with high and low-grade glioma pre- and postoperatively. METHODS: Between January 2009 and January 2011 27 patients with high-grade glioma (HG group) and 15 patients with low-grade glioma (LG group) were neuropsychologically assessed in the preoperative time, as well as 6 months and 1 year after surgery. During the examination, memory, visuo-

Zopiclone's residual effects on actual driving performance in a standardized test: a pooled analysis of age and sex effects in 4 placebo-controlled studies.

BACKGROUND: In many European countries, Canada, and Japan, the nonbenzodiazepine zopiclone is now among the most frequently prescribed hypnotic drugs. This finding can be explained by the growing view among physicians that zopiclone is more effective and safer than conventional benzodiazepines. However, in 4 studies using similar procedures, it has been shown that zopiclone 7.5 mg causes moderate to severe impairment in driving performance. OBJECTIVE: The goal of the present article was to review these studies and analyze the pooled data to determine whether the severity of effects is modifie

A parieto-medial temporal pathway for the strategic control over working memory biases in human visual attention.

The contents of working memory (WM) can both aid and disrupt the goal-directed allocation of visual attention. WM benefits attention when its contents overlap with goal-relevant stimulus features, but WM leads attention astray when its contents match features of currently irrelevant stimuli. Recent behavioral data have documented that WM biases of attention may be subject to strategic cognitive control processes whereby subjects are able to either enhance or inhibit the influence of WM contents on attention. However, the neural mechanisms supporting cognitive control over WM biases on attentio

Methylphenidate effects on prefrontal functioning during attentional-capture and response inhibition.

BACKGROUND: Methylphenidate improves motor response inhibition, typically assessed with the stop-signal task. The exact underlying mechanism for this, however, remains unknown. In addition, recent studies highlight that stop signals can have a confounding attentional-capture effect because of their low frequency in the task. In the current study, we assessed the effects of methylphenidate on neural networks of inhibitory control and attentional-capture within the context of two inhibitory control tasks. METHODS: The effects of methylphenidate (40 mg) were assessed using functional magnetic re

An MEG study of the spatiotemporal dynamics of bilingual verb generation.

Studies of first (L1) and second (L2) language representation in the brain have not identified the timing and locations of neural regions involved in L1 and L2 processing. Magnetoencephalography offers high spatial and temporal resolution and can be employed to disentangle subtle timing and neural control differences between L1 and L2 use. We tested bilingual adults in the MEG as they completed a picture verb generation task in L1 and L2. We found the expected progression of activation from occipital to temporal to inferior frontal areas. We also observed the following differences. A sustained

Beyond colour perception: auditory-visual synaesthesia induces experiences of geometric objects in specific locations.

Our brain constantly integrates signals across different senses. Auditory-visual synaesthesia is an unusual form of cross-modal integration in which sounds evoke involuntary visual experiences. Previous research primarily focuses on synaesthetic colour, but little is known about non-colour synaesthetic visual features. Here we studied a group of synaesthetes for whom sounds elicit consistent visual experiences of coloured 'geometric objects' located at specific spatial location. Changes in auditory pitch alter the brightness, size, and spatial height of synaesthetic experiences in a systematic

Emotional response inhibition in bipolar disorder: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study of trait- and state-related abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: Impaired response inhibition and poor impulse control are hallmarks of the manic phase of bipolar disorder but are also present during depressive and, to a lesser degree, euthymic periods. The neural mechanisms underlying these impairments are poorly understood, including how mechanisms are related to bipolar trait or state effects. METHODS: One-hundred four unmedicated participants with bipolar mania (BM) (n = 30), bipolar depression (BD) (n = 30), bipolar euthymia (BE) (n = 14), and healthy control subjects (n = 30) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging during emotiona

Potassium-channel openers KMUP-1 and pinacidil prevent subarachnoid hemorrhage-induced vasospasm by restoring the BKCa-channel activity.

Alterations in the activity of vascular K channels are commonly associated with abnormalities in cerebral vascular function after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Subarachnoid hemorrhage-induced vasospasm remains incompletely understood; nevertheless, activation of K channels may be of benefit in relieving spastic constriction. This study was to examine whether the vasodilators KMUP-1 and pinacidil, a KATP-channel opener, have the ability to prevent SAH-induced vasospasm via the large-conductance Ca-activated K (BKCa) channels in cerebral arteries. Rats were divided into four groups including sh

The nature of goal-directed action representations in infancy.

A critical question for developmental psychologists concerns how representations in infancy are best characterized. Past and current research provides paradoxical evidence regarding the nature of early representations: in some ways, infants appear to build concrete and specific representations that guide their online perception and understanding of different events; in other ways, infants appear to possess abstract representations that support inferences regarding unseen event outcomes. Characterizing the nature of early representations across domains is a central charge for developmentalists

An investigation of visual contour integration ability in relation to writing performance in primary school students.

A previous study found a visual deficit in contour integration in English readers with dyslexia (Simmers & Bex, 2001). Visual contour integration may play an even more significant role in Chinese handwriting particularly due to its logographic presentation (Lam, Au, Leung, & Li-Tsang, 2011). The current study examined the relationship between children's performance in visual contour (VC) integration and Chinese handwriting. Twenty students from grade 3 to grade 6 were recruited (M=9.51, SD=1.02) from a mainstream primary school using the convenience sampling method. Ten students were identifie

The assessment of postural control and the influence of a secondary task in people with anterior cruciate ligament reconstructed knees using a Nintendo Wii Balance Board.

BACKGROUND: Postural control impairments may persist following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. The effect of a secondary task on postural control has, however, not been determined. The purpose of this case-control study was to compare postural control in patients following ACL reconstruction with healthy individuals with and without a secondary task. PARTICIPANTS: 45 patients (30 men and 15 women) participated at least 6 months following primary ACL reconstruction surgery. Participants were individually matched by age, gender and sports activity to healthy controls. MATERIAL

Development of children with symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage born after vacuum extraction.

Vacuum extraction significantly reduces perinatal morbidity/mortality. Increased occurrence of intracranial hemorrhage has been associated with vacuum extraction and is multifactorial; a causative effect is not assumed. Long-term developmental outcome data in this specific subpopulation are lacking and may differ from non-vacuum extraction-associated intracranial hemorrhage. Long-term follow-up of children with symptomatic vacuum extraction-associated intracranial hemorrhage was retrospectively analyzed using Bayley Scales of Infant Development. Twenty-five newborns were identified with sympto

Effect of coordination biofeedback on (re)learning preferred postural patterns in post-stroke patients.

After stroke, ankle-hip coordination during stance is characterized by changes in the postural system dynamics, specifically the disappearance of the in-phase pattern and the reduced stability of the anti-phase pattern. This study was conducted to assess the success of a coordination visual biofeedback for the (re)learning of the two preferred patterns, and to explore the effect of this treatment on postural and functional abilities. Twenty four patients were randomly assigned to one of two experimental groups or to a control group. During one month, patients from experimental groups followed

Post-concussion cognitive declines and symptomatology are not related to concussion biomechanics in high school football players.

Concussion is a major public health concern with nearly 4 million injuries occurring each year in the United States. In the acute post-injury stage, concussed individuals demonstrate cognitive function and motor control declines as well as reporting increased symptoms. Researchers have hypothesized that the severity of these impairments is related to impact magnitude. Using the Head Impact Telemetry System (HITS) to record head impact biomechanics, we sought to correlate pre- and post-concussive impact characteristics with declines in cognitive performance and increases in concussion-related s

Depression, cognition, and self-appraisal of functional abilities in HIV: an examination of subjective appraisal versus objective performance.

Depression frequently co-occurs with HIV infection and can result in self-reported overestimates of cognitive deficits. Conversely, genuine cognitive dysfunction can lead to an under-appreciation of cognitive deficits. The degree to which depression and cognition influence self-report of capacity for instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) requires further investigation. This study examined the effects of depression and cognitive deficits on self-appraisal of functional competence among 107 HIV-infected adults. As hypothesized, higher levels of depression were found among those who ove
