Decompressive craniectomy in traumatic brain injury: insights from a 15-year multicentre cohort in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Decompressive craniectomy (DC) is a last-resort treatment for severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) with refractory intracranial hypertension. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) report mixed and sometimes conflicting results, leaving uncertainties regarding indications, timing, and long-term benefits. This study explored DC practices and outcomes in a contemporary Swedish setting contextualised in modern RCT evidence. METHODS: This retrospective multicentre study included 299 TBI patients who underwent DC between 2008 and 2022 across four Swedish neurosurgical centres. Clinical, ra

Atypical Cause of Headache: A Potential Diagnostic Pitfall in Acute Medicine.

Acute headache is a common clinical presentation with a broad differential diagnosis, ranging from benign to life-threatening conditions. Early recognition of atypical causes is essential, particularly when initial investigations are inconclusive. The etiology of acute headache can be broadly classified into primary and secondary causes. Primary headaches occur in the absence of identifiable structural pathology, whereas secondary headaches arise from an underlying organic cause. In this case presentation, a 65-year-old woman presented with a severe headache, which was triggered by an episode

In Vitro Comparison of an Aspherical Monofocal Lens Inducing Positive Spherical Aberrations With a Spherical Lens.

PURPOSE: To compare the in vitro performance of a monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) with an aspherical design inducing positive spherical aberrations (APSA IOL, RayOne EMV; Rayner), and a spherical lens (RayOne Spheric; Rayner). METHODS: In vitro wavefront measurements were conducted on 10.00, 20.00, and 30.00 diopter (D) lenses. The average through-focus modulation transfer function (MTF) (0 to 50 lp/mm) was generated for 168 synthetic numerical eye models with varying aperture sizes (2.0 to 5.5 mm) and corneal spherical aberration values (-0.49 to 0.91 µm). Evaluated metrics included MTFmax

Decisions and Influential Factors Regarding Class-Specific School Closures Against Seasonal Influenza Outbreak.

Background One of the characteristics of school closure in Japan is class-specific school closure, which involves a reactive, short-term closure in the event of an infectious disease outbreak. These closures are implemented at each school in reaction to the annual seasonal influenza outbreaks. Very little research has addressed the formation of class-specific school closures to combat infectious diseases in elementary schools. We carried out a survey on factors involved in the decision to close classes and the determination of the timing and duration of class closures in elementary schools in

CHANTER syndrome in the context of pain medication: a case report.

BACKGROUND: CHANTER (Cerebellar Hippocampal and Basal Nuclei Transient Edema with Restricted diffusion) is a recently described syndrome occurring in the context of drug abuse. While clinical findings are rather unspecific (disorientation, unresponsiveness), MR imaging (MRI) discloses a characteristic pattern (restricted diffusion in the basal ganglia and hippocampi, cerebellar oedema and haemorrhage), allowing for timely diagnosis before complications such as cerebellar swelling and herniation do occur. Here we report a case of CHANTER primarily based on imaging findings, as there was no evid

2020 Distance Meeting: Farewell to Professor David Yaffe - A pillar of the myogenesis field.

David Yaffe, PhD passed away on July 3, 2020 at the age of 91. His funeral and burial were held at his kibbutz in Israel, Givat Brenner. At the time of his death, he was emeritus professor of molecular cell biology at the Weizmann Institute of Science. If there is one word to describe David, it would be "pioneer", Halutz in Hebrew. He participated in the birth of his country as a soldier during the War of Independence, contributed his efforts to expanding the kibbutz movement and the nascent scientific community in Israel. He was a major figure in creating the field of muscle cell biology by g

Associations of the objective built environment along the route to school with children's modes of commuting: A multilevel modelling analysis (the SLIC study).

As active commuting levels continue to decline among primary schoolchildren, evidence about which built environmental characteristics influence walking or cycling to school remains inconclusive and is strongly context-dependent. This study aimed to identify the objective built environmental drivers of, and barriers to, active commuting to school for a multi-ethnic sample of 1,889 healthy primary schoolchildren (aged 5-11) in London, UK. Using cross-sectional multilevel ordered logistic regression modelling, supported by the spatial exploration of built environmental characteristics through car

Prominent ears: Anthropometric study of the external ear of primary school children of Harare, Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Prominent ear is the most common congenital ear deformity affecting 5% of children in the Western world and has profound psychosocial effects on the bearer. It is important to know the prevalence in the local population to have a better appreciation of the local burden of the abnormality as well as to know the parameters of ear morphology locally. These parameters can be useful in the diagnosis and evaluation of ear anomalies and may help reconstructive surgeons in reproducing an anatomically correct ear of an African/Zimbabwean child. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the frequency of prom

Efficacy of praziquantel in the treatment of Schistosoma haematobium infection among school-age children in rural communities of Abeokuta, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy with praziquantel (PZQ) has been the cornerstone of schistosomiasis control over the last two decades. Being the only available drug for the treatment of over 200 million people worldwide, continuous monitoring of PZQ efficacy under the pressure of widespread use is therefore advocated. METHODS: The efficacy of taking two doses of oral PZQ for the treatment of Schistosoma haematobium was examined among school children in Nigeria. Urine specimens were collected from 350 school children and examined using the filtration technique. Blood was collected for packed cell vol

[Halos and multifocal intraocular lenses: origin and interpretation].

OBJECTIVE: To present the theoretical and experimental characterization of the halo in multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOL). METHOD: The origin of the halo in a MIOL is the overlaying of 2 or more images. Using geometrical optics, it can be demonstrated that the diameter of each halo depends on the addition of the lens (ΔP), the base power (P(d)), and the diameter of the IOL that contributes to the «non-focused» focus. In the image plane that corresponds to the distance focus, the halo diameter (δH(d)) is given by: δH(d)=d(pn) ΔP/P(d), where d(pn) is the diameter of the IOL that contributes t

Improving sun-safe knowledge, attitude and behaviour in parents of primary school children: a pilot study.

Excessive sun exposure, mainly in childhood, represents one of the major skin cancer risk factors. Sun protection habits should start early in life to be effective. The purpose of this study was to investigate knowledge, attitude and sun protection behaviour in parents (P) and in their children (C). The educational intervention addressed the parents of 131 primary school pupils in Valencia, Spain, during the school year 2007-2008. A self-administered pre- and post-intervention questionnaire was handed in during school hours to be filled in by parents. Parents' compliance was very high (88 %).
