A comparison of effective dose and risk for different collimation options used in AP shoulder radiography.

INTRODUCTION: Radiography forms the cornerstone of the evaluation of shoulder disorders. While the benefits of radiography exceed the risks, there continues to be a compelling case for reduction of radiation exposure from diagnostic radiography. The aim of this project was to evaluate the radiation dose and risk for a variety of collimation settings used during anteroposterior (AP) shoulder radiography. METHODS: This was a phantom based study where an ATOM adult dosimetry phantom was loaded with 272 thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs). Following loading, the phantom was setup for an AP should

[Morpho-functional status of the thyroid gland and large cell hypothalamus nuclei in the ionizing irradiation and ethanol].

Morphofunctional state of the thyroid and nuclei in the hypothalamic large cells was examined following exposure to ionizing radiation at the dose of 20 Gy without and with ethanol administration (2.25 g/kg) before or after exposure. The highest thyroid radioprotecting effect of the ethyl alcohol was achieved when introduced before exposure as it reduced apoptosis of thyrocytes and balanced the disturbances in colloid amino acids iodination. As for nuclei of the hypothalamic large cells, the radiomodifying effect of ethanol was synergic when introduced before and potential amplifying after the

Diagnostic Performance of Diffusion-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Bone Malignancy: Evidence From a Meta-Analysis.

Current state-of-the-art nuclear medicine imaging methods (such as PET/CT or bone scintigraphy) may have insufficient sensitivity for predicting bone tumor, and substantial exposure to ionizing radiation is associated with the risk of secondary cancer development. Diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI) is radiation free and requires no intravenous contrast media, and hence is more suitable for population groups that are vulnerable to ionizing radiation and/or impaired renal functions. This meta-analysis was conducted to investigate whether whole-body DW-MRI is a viable means in differentiating bone m

Aldosterone modulates plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 and glomerulosclerosis in vivo.

BACKGROUND: Aldosterone promotes nephrosclerosis in several rat models, whereas aldosterone receptor antagonism blunts the effect of activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) on nephrosclerosis, independent of effects on blood pressure. Based on recent findings linking activation of the RAAS with impaired fibrinolytic balance, we hypothesized that aldosterone induces sclerosis through effects on plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), the major physiological inhibitor of plasminogen activation. METHODS: We examined the effect of aldosterone antagonism on the development

Physical Simulation of Ultrasonic Imaging Logging Response.

Ultrasonic imaging logging can visually identify the location, shape, dip angle and orientation of fractures and holes. The method has not been effectively applied in the field; one of the prime reasons is that the results of physical simulation experiments are insufficient. The physical simulation of fracture and hole response in the laboratory can provide a reference for the identification and evaluation of the underground geological structure. In this work, ultrasonic scanning experiments are conducted on a grooved sandstone plate and a simulated borehole and the influence of different frac

Sensitization to UV-induced apoptosis by the histone deacetylase inhibitor trichostatin A (TSA).

UV-induced apoptosis is a protective mechanism that is primarily caused by DNA damage. Cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPD) and 6-4 photoproducts are the main DNA adducts triggered by UV radiation. Because the formation of DNA lesions in the chromatin is modulated by the structure of the nucleosomes, we postulated that modification of chromatin compaction could affect the formation of the lesions and consequently apoptosis. To verify this possibility we treated human colon carcinoma RKO cells with the histone deacetylase inhibitor trichostatin A (TSA) prior to exposure to UV radiation. Our data

Use of Radiation Therapy in the Management of Vulvar Cancers-Identification and Management of Acute and Late Toxicities.

Radiation therapy plays a critical role in the management of locally advanced vulvar cancers but can lead to a unique spectrum of side effects, with >25% of patients experiencing high-grade toxicities. The treatment phase requires meticulous perineal skincare and may require pharmacologic management of dysuria and cystitis, diarrhea, nausea, and dermatitis/mucositis. The addition of chemotherapy warrants close laboratory monitoring for hematologic and metabolic derangements.

Radiotherapy-induced mitral stenosis: a three-dimensional perspective.

Mediastinal irradiation for cancers, mainly breast cancer and Hodgkin's disease, has numerous potential adverse effects, including coronary artery disease, pericarditis, cardiomyopathy, valvular disease, and conduction abnormalities. The prevalence of valvular dysfunction is relatively low, and regurgitation is more common. We report the case of a 58-year-old woman with severe radiation-induced mitral stenosis and discuss the potential additional value of three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography.

The Spatiotemporal Evolution of Radiation Resistance in Glioblastoma.

BACKGROUND: Although radiation therapy (RT) remains one of the most effective treatments for patients with the lethal brain tumor glioblastoma (GBM), quite a number of patients show resistance or relapse shortly after RT. There is an urgent need to uncover the temporal and spatial dynamics of RT resistance during tumor progression and treatment. METHODS: The radio-resistance signature score (RRSS) was calculated by utilizing glioma sphere-forming cells (GSCs) which recapitulate the transcriptomic landscape of GBM. RESULTS: RRSS can assess the RT response on both cell lines and GBM patients.

Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma Patient-Derived Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts Undergo Senescence While Retaining Protumorigenic Properties After Ex Vivo Irradiation.

PURPOSE: The majority of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) receive radiation therapy (RT) as part of their treatment plan. Even though RT is highly effective in HNSCC, therapeutic efficacy for advanced HNSCC is relatively low; one-third of patients with HNSCC treated with RT experience locoregional relapse within 5 years after treatment. Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are one of the most prominent cell types in the tumor microenvironment in advanced HNSCC and play a key role in therapy resistance. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Here, we characterize the response of pri

Systematic investigation of the ultrasonic cup-type radiator based on acoustic black hole for efficient focalization and cavitation.

In many technologies such as sonochemical processing, ultrasonic-assisted advanced oxidation, and precision medicine, how to optimize conventional ultrasonic radiators to achieve efficient energy focusing and precise cavitation enhancement has become a core technical bottleneck. Hence, this paper proposes a novel cup-type ultrasonic radiator design that synergistically integrates dual acoustic black hole (ABH) profiles with a mode-conversion vibration architecture to achieve enhanced energy focalization and cavitation. Electromechanical equivalent circuit models are established for the ABH cup

Radiofrequency ablation: Solution for a long-time therapeutic dilemma of chronic radiation proctitis?

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Chronic radiation proctitis is a prevalent condition following pelvic radiation therapy, occasionally leading to significant blood loss. Although medical treatment and argon plasma coagulation (APC) are well-established options, endoscopic radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an emerging treatment that has shown promising results in smaller studies. However, further research, particularly on long-term outcomes, is necessary. This study aimed to evaluate the treatment outcome of endoscopic RFA in patients with chronic radiation proctitis, with a particular focus on long-t

Activation of the P62-Keap1-NRF2 Pathway Protects against Ferroptosis in Radiation-Induced Lung Injury.

Radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) is one of the most common, serious, and dose-limiting toxicities of thoracic radiotherapy. A primary cause for this is the radiation-induced cell death. Ferroptosis is a recently recognized form of regulated cell death, characterized by the accumulation of lipid peroxidation products and lethal reactive oxygen species (ROS). The ROS generated by irradiation might be the original trigger of ferroptosis in RILI. In addition, activation of the P62-Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1)-nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) pathway has been sh
