Snakebite envenoming is a major health issue in many parts of the world, especially in rural areas. Vipera ammodytes is the commonest cause of snakebite in Greece. We report our experience with a patient bitten by such a snake, who developed massive intravascular hemolysis characterized by a spherocytic rather than microangiopathic hemolytic picture. This case illustrates the potential of snakebite envenoming to cause spherocytic hemolytic anemia associated with hemoglobinuria and acute renal failure, and represents the first report of V. ammodytes in this context. Another important point is t

The purpose of our study was to determine the prevalence of protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM), ocular diseases, and vitamin A deficiency in preschool children selected at random in a rural zone of the groundnut belt of Senegal. The prevalence of PCM was 37.1% (95% CI 33.8-40.2%) according to the Waterlow classification, with a majority of stunting, and prevalence of hypovitaminosis A was estimated to be 11.4% (95% CI 9.3-13.5%) by using impression cytology. Furthermore, 19.4% (95% CI 15.8-22.0%) of the children might be defined at risk of deficiency. The prevalence of Bitot's spots was equal

Out of a total of 150 carcases of rural dogs examined in Eastern Nigeria, 4 (2.7%) had Cysticercus cellulosae in the heart, tongue, thigh muscles and liver. Visual examination, palpation and multiple serial incision technique were used in locating the cysts. The cysts uncovered were collected in specimen bottles and transported in ice to the laboratory for morphologic assessment. The ages and sexes of the dogs were also recorded. Viable cysts were found only in young dogs. Environmental pollution with human excreta predisposes dogs to cysticercal infection. Thus environmental sanitation and he

The data recently collected in the Piedmont region of North Carolina as part of the National Institute of Mental Health Epidemiologic Catchment Area Program were used to examine somatization disorder in a community population. The authors found an adjusted prevalence of 0.38% for somatization disorder diagnosed according to the Diagnostic Interview Schedule and DSM-III. Respondents with somatization disorder demonstrated demographic characteristics (female, unmarried, nonwhite, from a rural area, less educated) that are consistent with findings from past clinical and epidemiologic studies of s

BACKGROUND: Infant morbidity continues to be a threat to child survival, especially in low and middle-income countries. There is a dearth of local studies on home-based practices, particularly considering their relationship with infections in infants. This study investigated the association between maternal hand hygiene practices and infant morbidity among mother-infant dyads in Enugu state, Nigeria.
METHODS: We used a cross-sectional descriptive design and conducted the study in four rural Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the Enugu North senatorial district of Enugu State, Nigeria. Utilizing

BACKGROUND: Few African studies have established links between climate shocks and mental health outcomes. This study examines the impact of climate change-related shocks on depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts in a group of 14,801 female participants dependent on the informal agricultural sector.
METHODS: Women living in informal settlements without running water or flushing toilets were classified as the treatment group, while rural women with basic amenities served as the control group. We applied a two-stage least-squares model to assess the effects of climate shocks-reduced rainfall,

INTRODUCTION: Early life soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection and diarrhoea are associated with growth faltering, anaemia, impaired child development and mortality. Exposure to faecally contaminated soil inside the home may be a key contributor to enteric infections, and a large fraction of rural homes in low-income countries have soil floors. The objective of this study is to measure the effect of installing concrete floors in homes with soil floors on child STH infection and other maternal and child health outcomes in rural Bangladesh.

Harmful traditional practices are deeply ingrained beliefs and behaviors within a society that significantly impact the well-being of mothers and children. In Ethiopia, there is limited awareness and comprehension concerning the prevalence of harmful traditional practices in the puerperal period. The underlying reasons for engaging in harmful cultural practices during this period at the community level remain inadequately studied. The main aim of this research is to investigate the prevalence of harmful traditional practices during the puerperal period and its associated factors in public heal

BACKGROUND: Identification and management of hypertension is one of the most common problems for primary care providers. Rural settings have increased rates of hypertension due to a variety of factors including access to care, socioeconomic factors, and restricted strategies to identify hypertension outside of the clinic setting. To address this challenge, a self-measured blood pressure (SMBP) program was employed at a rural clinic in South Dakota with a goal of increasing the number of patients with well-controlled blood pressure.
METHODS: One-hundred seventy-two patients aged 18-85 years wi

Ticks are medically important vectors of pathogens, many of which are zoonotic or impact domestic animal and/or wildlife health. Climate change, landuse modifications, and increasing interactions between domestic animals, wildlife, and humans have resulted in changes in tick-host dynamics and the emergence of novel pathogens worldwide. Therefore, describing the host and geographic ranges of vector species is essential in assessing disease risk, especially in understudied areas, and should be conducted in a One Health context. In sub-Saharan Africa, previous work on ticks has focused primarily

Disrespect and abuse during childbirth are violations of women's human rights and an indicator of poor-quality care. Disrespect and abuse during childbirth are widespread, yet data on providers' perspectives on the topic are limited. We examined providers' perspectives on the frequency and drivers of disrespect and abuse during facility-based childbirth in a rural county in Kenya. We used data from a mixed-methods study in a rural county in Western Kenya with 49 maternity providers (32 clinical and 17 non-clinical) in 2016. Providers were asked structured questions on disrespect and abuse, fol

BACKGROUND: Taenia solium is a neglected zoonotic parasite endemic throughout many low-income countries worldwide, including Zambia, where it causes human and pig diseases with high health and socioeconomic burdens. Lack of knowledge is a recognized risk factor, and consequently targeted health educational programs can decrease parasite transmission and disease occurrence in endemic areas. Preliminary assessment of the computer-based education program 'The Vicious Worm' in rural areas of eastern Zambia indicated that it was effective at increasing knowledge of T. solium in primary school stude

INTRODUCTION: The BCG vaccine is designed to protect against tuberculosis, but the vaccine may have broader effects. In 2014, the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization reviewed the literature on non-specific effects of BCG, and concluded that the evidence was consistent with beneficial non-specific effects and requested further randomised trials.
METHODS AND ANALYSES: Within the Bandim Health Project's urban and rural health and demographic surveillance systems, we will conduct a cluster-randomised trial in six suburban districts and 55 rural villages. Infants are enrolled at a

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Urban and rural India are both going through health epidemiological transition and will soon face huge burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Information on the status of NCDs in tribals is limited. Although the prevalence of hypertension in scheduled tribes (STs) has been studied in several states by the National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau, tribe-specific data are very scanty. The objective of this study was to generate data on the status of hypertension and diabetes, the two objectively measurable NCDs in Katkaris, the dominant ST in the Raigad district of coa

BACKGROUND: A National Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANUT) conducted in Mexico in 1999 identified a high prevalence of inadequate mineral intakes in the population by using 24-h recall questionnaires. However, the 1999 survey did not adjust for within-person variance. The 2012 ENSANUT implemented a more up-to-date 24-h recall methodology to estimate usual intake distributions and prevalence of inadequate intakes.
OBJECTIVE: We examined the distribution of usual intakes and prevalences of inadequate intakes of calcium, iron, magnesium, and zinc in the Mexican population in groups defined acc
