How past European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO) candidates acquired theoretical knowledge: an EBO survey.

BACKGROUND: The European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO), whose mission is to guarantee high standards of care in ophthalmology, has assessed residency training quality for over 30 years through the EBO Diploma (EBOD) examination, undertaken by residents and certified ophthalmologists from the 27 European Union member states as well as Norway, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Türkiye. Preparation for the EBOD is largely self-directed, conducted alongside demanding clinical duties, and relies mainly on asynchronous learning. This study aimed to analyse trends in the use of learning tools among

Asphyxial Mechanisms in Sand Burial, Findings and Diagnostic Challenges-A Case Report and a Literature Review.

Background: Fatal sand burial is a rare and diagnostically challenging entity in forensic practice. In such cases, death may result from thoracic or thoracoabdominal compression, airway obstruction by particulate material, massive inhalation of sand or soil, or a combination of these mechanisms. External signs may be subtle or absent, making postmortem interpretation highly dependent on a comprehensive, multilevel assessment. Case Presentation and Methods: We report the case of a 17-year-old male who died following accidental sand burial caused by the collapse of a self-excavated beach tunnel.

Prospective Cohort Study to Investigate Factors Associated With Continued Immobilization of a Nondisplaced Scaphoid Waist Fracture.

PURPOSE: The decision to continue immobilization of a nondisplaced scaphoid waist fracture is often based on radiographic appearance (despite evidence that radiographs are unreliable and inaccurate for diagnosing scaphoid union 6-12 weeks after fracture) and fracture tenderness (even though it is influenced by cognitive biases on pain). This may result in unhelpful additional immobilization. We studied nondisplaced scaphoid waist fractures to determine the factors associated with (1) the surgeon's decision to continue cast or splint immobilization at the first visit when cast removal was being

Knowledge, opinions, and practices related to oral cancer prevention and oral mucosal examination among dentists in Moldova, Belarus and Armenia: a multi-country cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Moldova, Belarus, and Armenia are post-Soviet countries with a high rate of heavy smokers and a relatively high age-standardized incidence of oral cancer. However, to our knowledge, there is lack of available information on dentists' knowledge on prevention of oral cancer in the countries in question. Accordingly, this study aimed to assess the knowledge, opinions, and practices related to oral cancer prevention and oral mucosal examination among dentists in Moldova, Belarus, and Armenia. METHODS: This was a multi-country, cross-sectional study based on a self-administered quest

Current policies for surveillance and management in women at risk of breast and ovarian cancer: a survey among 16 European family cancer clinics. European Familial Breast Cancer Collaborative Group.

The recent isolation of breast cancer predisposing genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2) allows the identification of carriers within affected families. These carriers have a 50-85% risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer and need careful follow-up. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the management and screening protocols implemented in high risk families at various family cancer clinics in Europe. A questionnaire was mailed to the members of the European Familial Breast Cancer Collaborative Group (n = 30) requesting information on the following issues: indication for surveillance of breasts and

Anxiety and negative self-schemas mediate the association between childhood maltreatment and paranoia.

This study examined affective and psychological routes from childhood maltreatment to increased paranoia in adulthood. Recent anxiety and negative beliefs about the self partially accounted for the associations between emotional or physical abuse and paranoia. However, as full mediation did not occur, other psychological, social and biological pathways require exploration.

Engagement and Intersectionality in Digital Self-Management Interventions for Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Asthma and COPD are long-term respiratory conditions that require active self-management to improve quality of life and reduce health care burdens. Digital health interventions (DHIs) are increasingly used to support behavior change, symptom monitoring, and medication adherence, offering new opportunities for personalized care and real-time feedback. Understanding patient engagement with digital tools is essential for optimizing intervention design, improving clinical outcomes, and addressing potential inequalities in access and effectiveness. This review is informed by a novel con

Analgesic use among community-dwelling people aged 75 years and older: A population-based interview study.

BACKGROUND: Pain is often underrecognized and undertreated among older people. However, older people may be particularly susceptible to adverse drug reactions linked to prescription and nonprescription analgesics. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to assess the prevalence of analgesic use among a random sample of community-dwelling people aged >or=75 years, and to investigate factors associated with daily and as-needed analgesic use. METHODS: A random sample of people aged >or=75 years was drawn from the population register in Kuopio, Finland, in November 2003. Data on prescription and

Differential associations of the timing and amount of social media use with sleep quality and academic performance among undergraduate medical and dental students in Pakistan: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep and reduced academic performance among medical and dental students have been linked to social media use; however, whether the amount, purpose, and timing of use are independently associated with these outcomes remains unclear. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 364 students enrolled in MBBS or BDS programs at ten institutions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, were recruited through convenience sampling and completed a paper-based questionnaire between October 2023 and April 2024. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and academi

High prevalence of toothache among Great East Japan Earthquake survivors living in temporary housing.

OBJECTIVES: The Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent tsunami cause large-scale destruction in the north-eastern coastal areas in Japan, and forced many survivors to relocate to prefabricated temporary housing, a typical emergency accommodation. Based on the hypothesis that higher toothache prevalence among the disaster survivors is associated with postdisaster distress, we determined the impact of temporary residential environment as potential stressor on the subjective toothache prevalence. METHODS: A repeated cross-sectional health survey based on self-reported questionnaire was condu

Frustrative nonreward engages midfrontal theta power and modulates effort expenditure.

Irritability is characterized by a propensity to experience frustration and has been associated with reduced self-reported willingness to expend effort for rewards. Frustration may be relevant to effortful reward pursuit, but its effects on effort expenditure have rarely been experimentally tested in humans. To address this gap, this study introduced a frustration induction in the Effort-Doors task to elicit frustrative nonreward (FNR), a negative emotional state triggered by unexpected reward loss, and examined its effects on physical effort expenditure and feedback-related electroencephalogr

The roles of emotional responding and regulation in adolescent friendship stability: A multimethod functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

This study examined longitudinal associations between early adolescents' emotional responding and use of cognitive reappraisal and the stability of their friendships with grade-mate peers. The sample consisted of 152 early adolescents (53.29% female) in the sixth and seventh grades from three rural southeastern middle schools who provided school-based peer nominations of their friendships. A stability index of adolescents' close friendships was computed from in-school peer nominations collected at two time points, approximately 1 year apart. Adolescents self-reported their levels of emotional

Mind over matter: psychological insights for effective weight reduction through exercise in university students.

This comprehensive review article examines the multifaceted psychological dimensions that underpin effective weight reduction through exercise among university students, a demographic uniquely vulnerable to weight gain and sedentary lifestyles during a critical transitional life period. Adopting a structured narrative (integrative) review approach and drawing on peer-reviewed literature identified through structured searches of PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC (2000-2025), with emphasis on studies recently published, the present review explores how psychological constructs in

A cross-cultural exploration of positive and negative body image and well-being among breast cancer survivors in Australia and China.

Body image significantly impacts the psychological and physical well-being of breast cancer survivors, with cultural factors shaping its expression and effects. This study aimed to examine the cultural differences in positive and negative body image of female breast cancer survivors in Australia (N = 338) and China (N = 116) and their associations with well-being. We assessed a path model examining how self-objectification, mindful self-care, and body acceptance by others influences body appreciation, functionality appreciation, and body dissatisfaction-and, in turn, their impact on well-being
