PURPOSE: Several mathematical models simulate a HIV/AIDS epidemic by using the assumption that heterosexual transmission is the major or sole transmission mode. The validity of these models has been unclear. The objective of this study was to elucidate specific distribution patterns and manifestations of respiratory chlamydiosis affecting the upper respiratory tract in different groups of the patients (both children and adults) presenting with otorhinolaryngological problems. A pathomorphological investigation of unstable atherosclerotic plaques and their distribution in coronary arteries were studied on successive (5 mm) transverse sections of autopsy material from 60 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Studies of sex differences in first admission age for inpatients in Missouri public psychiatric hospitals were examined for the incidence of major affective illness and dysthymia. Patients diagnosed as schizophrenic were also studied to check for diagnostic comparability. Five hundred patients with successful pancreatogram between 1982 and 1990, 8 patients (1.6%) were found to have complete pancreas divisum. An institutionalized adult cerebral palsy (CP) population was studied to evaluate the orthopaedic, functional, and cardiopulmonary status of 14 residents with untreated scoliosis greater than 45 degrees as compared with 42 residents with mild or no curves. It is presented a retrospective study of 20 patients under 30 years of age that underwent surgery for cholelithiasis in the "Hospital Ipiranga-INAMPS", São Paulo, from 1987 to 1990. By means of personal interview of parents in their homes, using a questionnaire, the prevalence rate and some other factors associated with febrile convulsions, were determined in a rural and an urban population of Anambra State of Nigeria. Joint laxity was measured clinically in 2,360 normal Chinese children aged 3-13 years with equal sex distribution using the Carter Wilkinson five tests and scoring system. Results showed minimal differences due to gender. The degree of joint laxity diminished with age. The knee extension and ankle extension tests were more sensitive than other tests. Chinese children were far more lax throughout the age range, with 100% "laxity" at age 3, 67% laxity at age 6, and 28% laxity at age 12, in contrast to 50, 5, and 1% laxity in the same age group respectively, in large series of Caucasian children.

Results of 483 cases of pterygia treated with surgery and prophylactic postoperatory beta therapy are discussed. An extensive set of neuropsychological measures was administered to 60 Parkinson's disease patients and age-, sex-, and education-matched controls in order to investigate the nature and prevalence of the cognitive deficit in the disease. Over a period of one year 20 549 new patients attended an accident and emergency department. Of these patients, 15 555 were victims of accidents, including 875 who had sustained facial injuries.
