The effects of melatonin and magnesium in a novel supplement delivery system on sleep scores, body composition and metabolism in otherwise healthy individuals with sleep disturbances.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a novel dietary supplement, including melatonin and magnesium, delivered via coffee pods on sleep quality, resting metabolic rate (RMR), and body composition in individuals with poor sleep quality disturbances. Using a double-blinded, randomized, crossover trial, we recruited 35 participants to a 4-week intervention with both supplements (1.9 mg melatonin + 200 mg elemental magnesium before sleep) and placebo conditions, considering a 7d washout period between treatments. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire was app

Associations between exploding head syndrome and measures of sleep quality and experiences, dissociation, and well-being.

Exploding head syndrome is a sensory parasomnia characterized by the perception of loud noises and/or a sense of explosion in the head that occurs when transitioning to or from sleep. Despite receiving little attention from both researchers and clinicians, studies suggest that approximately 10%-15% of individuals have episodes, with significant levels of fear occurring in a subset of cases. Using two independent samples, we examine sleep and well-being variables associated with exploding head syndrome. We focused on insomnia symptoms, life stress, anxiety and depression symptoms, and sleep exp

Gut microbiota-mediated modulation of circadian rhythms: Physiological and molecular impacts of dietary composition and feeding time.

Circadian rhythms regulate fundamental aspects of physiology and behavior. The disruption of circadian rhythms has been associated with metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and impaired immune function. Feeding behavior and gut microbiota represent two essential nodes within this regulatory network, as both are highly responsive to environmental cues such as diet composition and sleep-wake cycles. Research has shown that high-fat diets, excessive fructose, and chronic alcohol consumption perturb peripheral circadian rhythms and impair metabolic pathways, contributing to obesit

Age-dependent cardiorespiratory directional coupling in wake-resting state.

Objective.Cooperation in the cardiorespiratory system helps maintain internal stability. Various types of system interactions have been investigated; however, the characteristics of the interactions have mostly been studied using data collected in well-defined physiological states, such as sleep. Furthermore, most analyses provided general information about the interaction, making it difficult to quantify how the systems influenced one another.Approach.Cardiorespiratory directional coupling was investigated in different age groups (20 young and 19 elderly subjects) in a wake-resting state. Multiple facets of serotonergic modulation.

The serotonergic system of the central nervous system (CNS) has been implicated in a broad range of physiological functions and behaviors, such as cognition, mood, social interaction, sexual behavior, feeding behavior, sleep-wake cycle and thermoregulation. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) establishes a plethora of interactions with neurochemical systems in the CNS via its numerous 5-HT receptors and autoreceptors. The facets of this control are multiple if we consider the molecular actors playing a role in the autoregulation of 5-HT neuron activity including the 5-HT1A, 5-HT1B, 5-HT1D, 5

Sarcoidosis and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea: An Intriguing Relationship.

Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disorder of unknown etiology, most commonly affecting the lungs but potentially involving multiple organs. Fatigue and Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS) represent highly prevalent and disabling symptoms, often persisting despite stable systemic disease. Growing evidence indicates an increased prevalence of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) among patients with sarcoidosis, suggesting a complex and multifactorial association. Several mechanisms contribute to this link. Shared inflammatory pathways promote systemic inflammation and vascular dysfunction. Corti

Modafinil acquires reinforcing effects when combined with citalopram.

Modafinil (MOD) is a wakefulness promoter used to treat sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and obstructive sleep apnea. Its action mechanism consists in inhibiting dopamine (DAT) and norepinephrine (NET) transporters, but it has no affinity for the serotonin transporter (SERT). Modafinil's addictive potential is not yet clear, but one feature that differentiates it from potentially addictive drugs like cocaine revolves around affinity for SERT. The aims of the present study were to determine whether co-administration of MOD with the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor citalopram (CIT) can i

Wake-up strokes are linked to obstructive sleep apnea and worse early functional outcome.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Presence of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and especially obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a known risk factor for ischemic stroke. Additionally, SDB effects negatively on recovery after stroke. Up to one fourth of strokes are present on awakening. The link between OSA and wake-up stroke (WUS) has been suggested. We aim to determine the association between OSA and WUS in a Finnish stroke unit cohort. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational prospective longitudinal study consisted of 95 TIA (transient ischemic attack) and mild to moderate stroke patients referred to a Str

[Sleeping sickness, a reemerging sickness].

Human African Trypanosomiasis (THA) has reappeared in most intertropical countries of Black Africa and an estimated 400,000 new cases are reported every year. Genetic tests which now make possible the differentiation of morphologically similar trypanosome subspecies showed that a large variety of game and domestic animals act as reservoir hosts of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense, thus making it even more difficult to fight the disease. The detection of cases and their treatment are absolutely necessary in preventing the spread of the disease. This can only be carried out with mobile medical teams

Artificial Intelligence-Driven Hemodynamic Monitoring of Simulated Bruxism Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy: A Preliminary Study.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-related and neuromuscular conditions affect the daily lives of individuals as they impact physical and cognitive well-being. While not classified as a disorder, bruxism has emerged as a prevalent condition characterized by involuntary teeth grinding and jaw clenching, occurring either during sleep or wakefulness. Often left unnoticed, this unconscious behavior can contribute to severe dental damage, facial muscle fatigue, and temporomandibular joint disorders. These consequences require early detection and intervention to prevent long-term complications. Traditionally, polyso
