Automated Tracking of Motion and Body Weight for Objective Monitoring of Rats in Colony Housing.

Living together in large social communities within an enriched environment stimulates self-motivated activity in rats. We developed a modular housing system in which a single unit can accommodate as many as 48 rats and contains multiple functional areas. This rat colony cage further allowed us to remotely measure body weight and to continuously measure movement, including jumping and stair walking between areas. Compared with pair-housed, age-, strain-, and weight-matched rats in conventional cages, the colony-housed rats exhibited higher body mass indices, had more exploratory behavior, and w

Developmental Trajectories of Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors From Adolescence Through Adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the patterns among individuals in the long-term course of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs). The objective of this study was to identify developmental trajectories of STBs from adolescence through young adulthood, as well as risk and protective covariates, and nonsuicidal outcomes associated with these trajectories. METHOD: A total of 180 adolescents (ages 12-18 years at recruitment) were repeatedly assessed over an average of 13.6 years (2,273 assessments) since their psychiatric hospitalization. Trajectories were based on ratings of STBs at each assessm

Readiness to change and brain damage in patients with chronic alcoholism.

High motivation to change is a crucial triggering factor to patients' engagement in clinical treatment. This study investigates whether the low readiness to change observed in some alcoholic inpatients at treatment entry could, at least partially, be linked with macrostructural gray matter abnormalities in critical brain regions. Participants comprised 31 alcoholic patients and 27 controls, who underwent 1.5-T magnetic resonance imaging. The Readiness to Change Questionnaire, designed to assess three stages of motivation to change (precontemplation, contemplation and action stages), was comple

Evidence-based psychosocial treatments for phobic and anxiety disorders in children and adolescents.

The article reviews psychosocial treatments for phobic and anxiety disorders in youth. Using criteria from Nathan and Gorman (2002), 32 studies are evaluated along a continuum of methodological rigor. In addition, the treatments evaluated in each of the 32 studies are classified according to Chambless et al.'s (1996) and Chambless and Hollon's (1998) criteria. Findings from a series of meta-analyses of the studies that used waitlists also are reported. In accordance with Nathan and Gorman, the majority of the studies were either methodologically robust or fairly rigorous. In accordance with Ch

Neonatal cardiac vagal tone and school-age developmental outcome in very low birth weight infants.

Twenty very low birth weight (VLBW) children participated in a longitudinal follow-up study designed to explore the relation between neonatal physiological measures and school-age (6-9 years) outcome measures. Neonatal measures of mean heart period and cardiac vagal tone (respiratory sinus arrhythmia, RSA) were derived from weekly recordings at 33, 34, and 35 weeks gestational age. An RSA Maturation measure was calculated across the 3-week period to assess functional changes in vagal regulation of the heart during a period in which there is enhanced myelination of the vagus. In addition, the r

Cross-national evidence for the clustering and psychosocial correlates of adolescent risk behaviours in 27 countries.

BACKGROUND: According to Jessor's Problem Behaviour Theory (PBT) and Moffitt's theory of adolescence-limited antisocial behaviour, adolescent risk behaviours cluster and can be predicted by various psychosocial factors including parent, peer and school attachment. This study tested the potential influence of the sociocultural, or macro-level, environment on the clustering and correlates of adolescent risk behaviour across 27 European and North American countries. METHODS: Analyses were based on data from the 2009-10 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study. Participants compromis

Personal values and involvement in problem behaviors among Bahamian early adolescents: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies, particularly in developing countries, have explored the relationship between adolescents and parental values with adolescent problem behaviors. The objectives of the study are to (1) describe adolescents' personal values, their problem behaviors, and the relationships thereof according to gender and (2) examine the relationship between parental values, adolescent values, and adolescents' problem behaviors among sixth-grade students and one of their parents. METHODS: The data used in these analyses were from the baseline assessment of a school-based HIV risk reduction

Application of Behavioral Science in Digital Therapeutics for Individuals With Prediabetes: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Digital therapeutics are increasingly used to manage prediabetes due to their accessibility and potential for personalization. Their success depends heavily on applying behavioral science and integrating theoretical models into digital platforms. However, there has not been a comprehensive account of how behavioral science has been used in digital therapeutics for individuals with prediabetes. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to examine the use of behavioral theories and techniques in digital therapeutic interventions for individuals with prediabetes, and to identify opportuni

The Social Costs of Gambling: An Economic Perspective.

Much of the opposition to legalized gambling is based on analyses of the social costs that occur as a result of pathological gambling. It is our contention that many, if not most, authors who have contributed to this literature are either unclear or misguided in what they define as social costs. Instead of starting with a clear definition of what constitutes a social cost, these authors have adopted an ad hoc approach-using "common sense" to determine what constitutes losses to society and then attempting to quantify the impact of those activities. We believe this is not, as some suggest, simp

The influence of olfactory stimuli on social cognition, prejudice and emotions: a systematic review of the literature.

This review synthesizes research on how olfactory stimuli influence social cognition, emotions, and prejudice, an area that remains understudied despite the olfactory system's direct neural connections to limbic regions like the amygdala and hippocampus. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, the authors systematically searched PubMed and Web of Science (2000-2025), identifying 21 eligible studies from 569 records. The literature reveals three core mechanisms through which odors exert their effects: (1) early perceptual modulation of social stimuli, (2) affective priming via disgust and valence sys

Predicting Anxiety and Depression Based on Video Game Addiction with the Mediating Role of Social Support.

BACKGROUND: Today, computer games have become one of the most popular forms of entertainment, especially among teenagers. While games may have various benefits, video games are shown to have different consequences for players, especially those who are younger, and can be highly addictive. The present research investigated the effect of computer game addiction on anxiety and depression in adolescents with the mediating role of social support. METHODS: Overall, 304 adolescents aged 12-18 years old living in Tehran were included in the research through a convenient method. The required data were

Transgender Adolescents' Uses of Social Media for Social Support.

PURPOSE: Transgender adolescents are at higher risk for negative mental health outcomes, such as depression, anxiety, and suicidality, compared with cisgender adolescents. Social media may be an effective venue for addressing these health disparities because most adolescents have access to online information and socialization. This study used qualitative inquiry to explore transgender adolescents' uses of social media for social support. METHODS: Transgender adolescents between the ages of 15 and 18 years with a social media profile were recruited from a pediatric gender clinic in the Midwest

The role of social support in well-being and coping with self-reported stressful events in adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the role that social support plays in well-being and in coping after a stressful event in a group of non-clinical adolescents. Furthermore, this study aimed at replicating the finding that adolescents who reported sexual abuse reported more symptoms and less adequate coping strategies than adolescents who reported another type of stressful event or no stressful episode. METHOD: Eight hundred and twenty adolescents between 12 and 18 years of age filled out questionnaires assessing social support (Social Support Questionnaire, Sarason, Shearin, Pierce, & Saras

Reduction of severe behavior problems in the community using a multicomponent treatment approach.

Problem behavior often prevents community integration of people with developmental disabilities. Therefore, we evaluated a multicomponent approach for remediating problem behavior in public community settings (specifically, supermarkets). We selected treatments based on hypotheses about the variables controlling the problem behavior (hypothesis-driven model). The multicomponent intervention included choice making, embedding, functional communication training, building tolerance for delay of reinforcement, and presenting discriminative stimuli for nonproblem behavior. Treatment progress was mon

Behavior in nonorganic failure to thrive.

Twenty-one infants with failure to thrive were examined, shortly after hospital admission, for a set of eight noninterpersonal and six interpersonal behaviors identified as possibly being associated with nonorganic failure to thrive. The infants selected for study exhibited some of the target behaviors early in the course of hospitalization, and all were subsequently diagnosed as having nonorganic failure to thrive. The target behaviors include inactivity; irritability; posturing; lack of affect; rumination; excessive thumbsucking; disproportionate use of hands and fingers rather than arms, le

Visual search attentional bias modification reduced the attentional bias in socially anxious individuals.

Recent years have raised questions about the effectiveness of attentional bias modification (ABM) in individuals with social anxiety. In the current study, we employed a novel training method-ABM-positive-search training-to modify attentional bias in socially anxious individuals. The attentional bias was measured using the dot-probe task, and brain electrical activity was recorded. The ABM-positive-search group was instructed to search for a happy face in a 3 × 3 visual array. The placebo control group was asked to find out whether the only male from the female or the only female from the male

Video analysis of interaction in schizophrenia reveals functionally relevant abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: Deficits of dyadic social interaction seem to diminish social functioning in schizophrenia. However, most previous studies are of a limited ecological validity due to decontextualized experimental conditions far off from real-world interaction. In this pilot study, we thus exposed participants to a more real-world-like situation to generate new hypotheses for research and therapeutic interventions. METHODS: Dyads of either participants with schizophrenia (n = 21) or control participants without mental disorder (n = 21) were presented with a 5-min emotionally engaging movie. The sub

Young Adults' Perspectives on Factors Related to Relapse After First-Episode Psychosis: Qualitative Focus Group Study.

Relapse after first-episode psychosis (FEP) is a major clinical challenge for specialized early intervention services. Understanding patient perspectives on factors contributing to relapse can inform the development of risk assessments and preventive interventions. The objective of this study was to identify factors that may contribute to and prevent relapse from the perspectives of patients receiving services for FEP. Data from 25 participants across four focus groups in Canada were analyzed with a descriptive content analysis approach. Twelve factors were identified, of which four (social en
