Using the social ecological model to understand the factors that influence the attitudes women have towards the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis for the prevention of HIV in Uganda.

The use of biomedical means of HIV prevention, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), is effective in reducing HIV infection in high-risk groups that include women. Regardless of the known efficacy of PrEP, the number of women using PrEP in Uganda is still low. People's decisions to engage in a health behaviour, in this case, PrEP, is influenced by the attitudes and perceptions they have towards it. This study explored the factors that influence women's attitudes and decisions to use PrEP. Qualitative methods were used to collect data from women aged 18-45 years, health workers, and female c

Bowel Urgency in Crohn's Disease: Bridging the Gap Between Patients and Healthcare Providers.

Bowel urgency (BU) is a prevalent and highly burdensome symptom among patients with inflammatory bowel disease. While BU is now recognized as a key symptom of ulcerative colitis, in the case of Crohn's disease (CD), it is often under-recognized by healthcare providers (HCPs) and inadequately captured in clinical assessments. Reported in up to 96% of patients with CD, BU can significantly impair quality of life, contributing to anxiety, social withdrawal, and reduced daily functioning. Despite its frequency and impact, BU is excluded from widely used CD activity indices and is infrequently incl

Validating the Anal Sex Stigma Scale among Black Sexual Minority Men Living with HIV.

Anal sex stigma substantially affects sexual minority men (SMM), particularly regarding sexual roles and the implications of identifying as a "top" or "bottom." The intersection of negative perceptions regarding race, sexuality, and health status could intensify anal sex stigma effects among Black SMM living with HIV. However, there are few validated tools to measure this form of stigma among this demographic. Therefore, this study tested the psychometric properties of the Anal Sex Stigma Scale (ASSS) among 650 Black SMM living with HIV. Using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, a tw

Perspectives of people with myasthenia gravis on physical activity and experience of physical activity advice from health professionals in the Australian context: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Physical activity is an important modifiable determinant of health. There has been a historical aversion to movement in people with myasthenia gravis (MG) due to the pathophysiology of the disease, however, research suggests engagement in physical activity is safe and does not exacerbate symptoms. There are currently no studies investigating the qualitative perspectives of people with MG on physical activity. The aim of this study was to explore perceptions of physical activity, barriers, enablers, and participants' experiences of physical activity advice from health professionals. M

Contemporary attitudes and beliefs on coronary artery calcium from social media using artificial intelligence.

Coronary artery calcium (CAC) is a powerful tool to refine atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk assessment. Despite its growing interest, contemporary public attitudes around CAC are not well-described in literature and have important implications for shared decision-making around cardiovascular prevention. We used an artificial intelligence (AI) pipeline consisting of a semi-supervised natural language processing model and unsupervised machine learning techniques to analyze 5,606 CAC-related discussions on Reddit. A total of 91 discussion topics were identified and were classif

"Fighting demons": Stigma and shifting norms in explicit mention of overdose in obituaries, 2010-2019.

Obituaries are often the only published record of an individual's life and elicit community reactions, including stigmatization. Because obituaries are typically written by the bereaved, their content reflects the writer's perceptions of mores governing the social context of the next-of-kin and decedent. When a cause of death is stigmatized, it can influence the way the bereaved write the obituary. However, what constitutes a stigmatized cause of death may change as larger societal discourses of morality shift and conditions or events become framed differently. Using a sample of obituaries (N

Overcoming barriers to the management of seizure clusters: ease of use and time to administration of rescue medications.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with epilepsy can experience seizure clusters (acute repetitive seizures), defined as intermittent, stereotypic episodes of frequent seizure activity that are distinct from typical seizure patterns. There are three FDA-approved rescue medications, diazepam rectal gel, midazolam nasal spray, and diazepam nasal spray, that can be administered to abort a seizure cluster in a nonmedical, community setting. Despite their effectiveness and safety, rescue medications are underutilized, and patient/caregiver experiences and perceptions of ease of use may constitute a substantial

Post-traumatic Growth in the First COVID Outbreak in Hong Kong.

Post-traumatic growth (PTG) emerges from highly stressful situations. The coronavirus (COVID) pandemic may qualify as one. This study investigated the PTG among Hong Kong citizens during the first outbreak in spring 2020, shortly after a large-scale social movement subsided. A longitudinal online survey was launched during the peak (Time 1) and the palliation (Time 2) of the outbreak. Among the 327 participants who completed both waves, 28.4% exhibited probable post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in Time 1, while 18.0% reported significant PTG in at least one domain in Time 2. The interactio

Sexual differentiation of the human hypothalamus: Relationship to gender identity and sexual orientation.

Gender identity (an individual's perception of being male or female) and sexual orientation (heterosexuality, homosexuality, or bisexuality) are programmed into our brain during early development. During the intrauterine period in the second half of pregnancy, a testosterone surge masculinizes the fetal male brain. If such a testosterone surge does not occur, this will result in a feminine brain. As sexual differentiation of the brain takes place at a much later stage in development than sexual differentiation of the genitals, these two processes can be influenced independently of each other a
