[Longer medical certificates do not improve the quality of physicians' assessments].

Sickness certification is a common and demanding task in Swedish primary care, particularly for patients with mental health conditions, for whom assessments of work ability and functional impairment are often associated with considerable uncertainty. Drawing on the findings of Falk et al., the authors argue that longer or more detailed sickness certificates do not improve the consistency or quality of physicians' assessments but do increase the administrative burden. The authors advocate shifting the focus from documentation towards active rehabilitation. Suggested strategies include earlier a

With Grief and Growth: Examining Volunteer Motivations and Their Relationships to Grief Intensity and Posttraumatic Growth.

Engaging in volunteer work could be associated with posttraumatic growth (PTG). Investigating the associations among motivations to volunteer, PTG, and grief can help us understand how people cope with death. Volunteer functions theory posits six functions of volunteer motivations: protective, values, career, social, understanding, and enhancement. We studied the associations that each function has with grief intensity, PTG, and current volunteer status. Participants (N = 187) with volunteer experience who experienced death completed an online study. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed t

Voices Beyond Bars: Formerly Incarcerated Women's Barriers and Facilitators to Reintegration.

Formerly incarcerated women (FIW) face personal, societal, and systemic barriers to reintegration. Occupational therapy professionals (OTPs) are called to support marginalized groups and advocate for change. Guided by the Framework of Occupational Justice, this qualitative study examined how barriers and facilitators shape FIW's occupational participation and experiences of occupational injustice. Interviews with 20 FIW explored post-incarceration experiences in home, work, health, and social engagement. Data were analyzed thematically and organized into personal, societal, and systemic catego

Researching retraction: Do we need more rules or more honesty?

Should the methodological tools and review protocols required of biomedical researchers become the default for social science meta-researchers? And should these reporoducibility standards then be used to gatekeep and police "methodological expertise?" This seems to be the judgmental sub-text of the Bakker et al commentary on our paper. In this response, we make the case for critical accountability research to cultivate forms of methodological rigor that are aligned with the research questions and design. Our paper, based on a systematic topographical review of research into retraction, sought

Psychosocial Safety Climate and Occupational Health Outcomes Among Lone and Non-Lone Workers in the U.S.

OBJECTIVE: Examine associations between psychosocial safety climate (PSC), occupational stress, and injury risk among lone workers (LWs) and non-LWs in the United States. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of representative General Social Survey data. LWs were identified using a systematic approach. Logistic regression assessed associations between PSC and outcomes, including PSC-by-worker-type interaction terms, adjusting for demographic, health, and employment factors. RESULTS: Each 1 SD increase in PSC was associated with 45% reduced odds of stress (OR=0.55, 95% CI: 0.48-0.63) and 22% redu

Understanding stigma and mental health among the transgender sex workers: A phenomenological inquiry.

The present study employs a qualitative method to explore how stigma and discrimination shape the psychological health of transgender sex workers (m to f) who have faced heightened vulnerability in a heteronormative society. Drawing on 16 in-depth interviews conducted in India through purposive sampling, the study reveals that participants navigate dual forms of stigma which includes stigma attached to gender identity and stigma associated with sex work reflecting a layered form of marginalization. These intersecting stigmas contribute to persistent mental distress, manifesting through self-ha

Living in the shadows: Sudden maternal loss in childhood and the lifelong negotiation of identity and belonging among Arab-Muslim adults in Israel.

Through a constructivist qualitative design and semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 11 adults, this study examines how Arab-Muslims retrospectively make sense of childhood maternal loss and how it continues to shape them in adulthood. Analysis identified two interrelated themes: participants experienced sudden maternal death as a biographical rupture dividing life into a "before" and "after," and they sustained ongoing bonds with their deceased mothers, neither fully absent nor present, through everyday relational practices. These themes suggest that participants move from rupture toward

Mental Health Safety Challenges Among Pre-Hospital Emergency Medical Service Providers: A Scoping Review.

OCCUPATIONAL APPLICATIONSIn this scoping review, we identified considerable mental health challenges among pre-hospital emergency medical service (EMS) providers, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) burnout, depression, anxiety, suicidality, and occupational stress. Among the 61 studies we analyzed, sleep disorders emerged as the most prominent contributing factor, frequently associated with PTSD, depression, generalized anxiety, and other poor mental health conditions. Other key risk factors included high workload, years of service, exposure to violence, and insufficient peer or s

Trial of Converting Nursing Records into Simplified and Structured Information Utilizing ChatGPT-3.5.

In Japan, the excessive length of time required for nursing records has become a social problem. A shift to concise "bulleted" records is needed to apply speech recognition and to work with foreign caregivers. Therefore, using 96,000 descriptively described anonymized nursing records, we identified typical situations for each information source and attempted to convert them to "bulleted" records using ChatGPT-3.5(For return from the operating room, Status on return, Temperature control, Blood drainage, Stoma care, Monitoring, Respiration and Oxygen, Sensation and pain, etc.). The results showe

Sleep and Circadian Disturbance in Cardiovascular Risk.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We discuss the relationship between sleep and circadian factors with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, including physiologic, behavioral, and psychological mechanisms along this pathway. RECENT FINDINGS: The relationship between short and long sleep duration, as well as insomnia, with CVD risk is well-established. Recent work has highlighted how other sleep factors, such as sleep regularity (i.e., consistency of sleep timing), multidimensional sleep health, and circadian factors like chronotype and social jetlag, relate to CVD risk. Sleep-focused interventions (e.g., cogni

Integrating pheromonal and spatial information in the amygdalo-hippocampal network.

Vomeronasal information is critical in mice for territorial behavior. Consequently, learning the territorial spatial structure should incorporate the vomeronasal signals indicating individual identity into the hippocampal cognitive map. In this work we show in mice that navigating a virtual environment induces synchronic activity, with causality in both directionalities, between the vomeronasal amygdala and the dorsal CA1 of the hippocampus in the theta frequency range. The detection of urine stimuli induces synaptic plasticity in the vomeronasal pathway and the dorsal hippocampus, even in ani

Glitches in the utilization of telehealth in pediatric rheumatology patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Telehealth is an extraordinary advancement of modern medicine. It has increased access to care for underserved populations and, in the case of pediatric rheumatology, has expanded the reach of a limited work force. During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, telehealth has radically changed the way healthcare workers have been able to deliver care while maintaining social distance. In addition to the infectious havoc of COVID-19, the pandemic has further altered the psychosocial milleu of our society which directly impacts the wellness and safety of our pediatric rheumatology pati

The murine ortholog of Kaufman oculocerebrofacial syndrome protein Ube3b regulates synapse number by ubiquitinating Ppp3cc.

Kaufman oculocerebrofacial syndrome (KOS) is a severe autosomal recessive disorder characterized by intellectual disability, developmental delays, microcephaly, and characteristic dysmorphisms. Biallelic mutations of UBE3B, encoding for a ubiquitin ligase E3B are causative for KOS. In this report, we characterize neuronal functions of its murine ortholog Ube3b and show that Ube3b regulates dendritic branching in a cell-autonomous manner. Moreover, Ube3b knockout (KO) neurons exhibit increased density and aberrant morphology of dendritic spines, altered synaptic physiology, and changes in hippo

Neuroendocrine Regulation of Male Sexual Behavior.

The major brain areas that control males' sexual motivation and performance include the amygdala, the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), the medial preoptic area (MPOA), and paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus, as well as the mesolimbic dopamine (DA) system. The MPOA, PVN, and brain stem and spinal nuclei control the genital reflexes. Sensory and motor aspects are integrated and elicited by the amygdala, BNST, MPOA, PVN, and the mesolimbic and nigrostriatal DA tracts, which are integral for other social behaviors, as well. Developmental hormonal effects organize the netw

Mediating the Maltreatment-Delinquency Relationship: The Role of Triad Gang Membership.

The primary aim of this article is to examine the role of triad affiliation in mediating the relationship between child maltreatment (neglect, punishment, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse) and delinquency among active young gang members in Hong Kong. A sample of 177 gang members aged 12 to 24 was recruited to complete a questionnaire with the assistance of a youth outreach social work team. Neglect was identified as the most common form of maltreatment, followed by emotional abuse, punishment, and sexual abuse. Mediation analyses confirmed that triad affiliation acts as a mediating variable i
