Social and Racial Disparity Impacts Victims of Physical Abuse Among Trauma Patients.

BACKGROUND: Violence in the form of physical abuse is an underreported crime and a significant social problem in the United States. However, the true burden of the problem as well as the predictors of intervention remain unknown. The aim of our study was to assess the prevalence of physical abuse among trauma patients, and to identify the predictors of investigation of physical abuse by law enforcement and change in caregiver on discharge. METHODS: A 3-y (2017-2019) retrospective analysis of the Trauma Quality Improvement Program database was performed, which included a total of 3,138,896 tra

Autism-associated ASPM variant causes macrocephaly and social-cognitive deficits in mice.

In autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental disorder with social-cognitive deficits, macrocephaly occurs in 20% of patients with severe symptoms. However, the role of macrocephaly in ASD pathogenesis remains unclear. Here, we address the mechanistic link between macrocephaly and ASD by investigating a novel ASD-associated gain-of-function A1877T mutation in ASPM ( abnormal spindle-like microcephaly-associated ). ASPM is a key regulator of cortical size and cell proliferation expressed in both excitatory and inhibitory neuronal progenitors but not in differentiated neurons. We found

The Financial Toll of Social Determinants of Health on Orthopedic Trauma Care: A National Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDoH) are associated with increased healthcare costs across various conditions, yet their impact on orthopedic trauma remains understudied. Orthopedic injuries impose a significant financial burden on the healthcare system, but the extent to which SDoH contribute to hospitalization costs is not well established. This study evaluates the association between documented SDoH-related diagnoses and inpatient costs in orthopedic trauma using a nationally representative dataset. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study of the 2016-2021 National Inpati

Impact of social determinants of health on mortality risk in older adults with osteopenia or osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND: Osteopenia and osteoporosis are prevalent bone disorders among older adults that impose substantial health and economic burdens. This study aimed to explore the associations between social determinants of health (SDOH) and mortality risk in this vulnerable population. METHODS: We analyzed data of 3087 older adults (mean age 70.62 years, 66.95 % women) from the 2005-2010, 2013-2014, and 2017-2018 cycles of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. SDOH were quantified using an 8-item composite score and categorized into four groups: 7-8 (reference) group, 5-6 group, 3-4 gro

The role of social determinants of health on disease outcomes in axial spondyloarthritis: A narrative review.

This review provides a narrative exploration of the literature on various social determinants of health that influence outcomes in axial Spondyloarthritis (axSpA). By using the PROGRESS-Plus framework (place of residence, race, occupation, gender/sex, religion, education, socioeconomic status, social capital, age), this review discusses how these factors have been studied and their impact on disease outcomes in axSpA. The findings suggest that various patient-level factors (e.g. female sex, blue-collar jobs, low educational level) and country-level factors (e.g. low-income countries) associate

Causal assessments of multilevel social determinant factors on meningioma disparities in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Prior investigations into meningioma disparities have explored associative relationships of socioeconomic status (SES) and race-ethnicity but face gaps in the range of other social determinants/drivers of health (SDoH) factors considered and sample size. Furthermore, none have explored causal relationships between SDoH-factors and outcomes. Thus, this study aims to utilize a recent, national sampling of meningioma patients incorporating comprehensive inferential and causal-mediation approaches to delineate which SDoH-factors objectively drive care and prognostic disparities. Seasonal biological social and cognitive mechanisms of mental health among Chinese adolescents.

This study develops a "Bio-Social-Cognitive Dynamic Interaction Model" to explore seasonal mental health risks in Chinese adolescents. Using data from cross-sectional surveys (N = 6,121), longitudinal tracking (N = 1,000), and RCTs (N = 200), we assess mental health via PHQ-9, GAD-7, and SADQ scales. We analyze multidimensional indicators (melatonin, vitamin D, academic stress) via SEM and ARIMA, considering school stage and gender. Results show winter has the highest depression and anxiety scores (PHQ-9: M = 14.5 ± 4.8), linked to vitamin D deficiency (β=-0.25, p < 0.001) and social stress. S

A Further Characterisation of the Neuropsychological Profile, Social Perception, and Academic Skills in Sotos Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Sotos syndrome (SoS) is a rare genetic disorder characterised by physical overgrowth and by frequent intellectual disability and comorbidity with neurodevelopmental disorders. A recent study documented a specific cognitive profile of SoS. However, further research is needed to replicate and expand these findings to other neuropsychological domains, including social perception. Moreover, numeracy has long been considered as a weakness in SoS, but inconsistent evidence asks for a further assessment of academic skills. METHOD: This single-cohort, cross-sectional study enrolled 28 par

Safety and Efficacy of Modular Digital Psychotherapy for Social Anxiety: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder is a common mental health condition characterized by an intense fear of social situations that can lead to significant impairment in daily life. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been recognized as an effective treatment; however, access to therapists is limited, and the fear of interacting with therapists can delay treatment seeking. Furthermore, not all individuals respond. Tailoring modular treatments to individual cognitive profiles may improve efficacy. We developed a novel digital adaptation of CBT for social anxiety that is both modular and fully

The roles of parental verbal communication and child characteristics in the transmission and maintenance of social fears.

BACKGROUND: Although social anxiety runs in families, little is known about how parents and children contribute to the intergenerational transmission of social fears. We examined whether mothers transfer social fear beliefs to their children through verbal communication and how children's behavioral inhibition and social anxiety contribute to this transmission. The associations of children's social fear beliefs with peer avoidance and interpretation bias were also examined. METHODS: Participants (N = 291, 54% female) were followed from toddlerhood to middle childhood. Behavioral inhibition wa

Epigenetic signatures of accelerated aging and immune dysregulation in youth with social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a prevalent psychiatric condition with significant psychological and socioeconomic consequences. While its psychological characteristics are well-documented, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood, particularly in younger populations. This study investigates the epigenetic basis of SAD by identifying differential DNA methylation sites, pathway enrichment patterns, and tissue-specific expression profiles. Genome-wide methylation analysis revealed nominally significant CpG sites associated with SAD, mapping to genes involved in neurotransmit

Impaired pattern of cognitive control moderates attentional bias in individuals with social anxiety.

The potential relationship between cognitive control pattern and attentional bias in individuals with high social anxiety (HSAs) remains unclear. This study uses the Dual Mechanisms of Control framework to investigate the impact of cognitive control patterns on attentional bias in HSAs. 55 individuals with low social anxiety (LSAs) and 67 HSAs completed the AX-continuous performance task and dot-probe task. Compared to LSAs, HSAs demonstrated lower accuracy on BX and AY trial and a reduced discrimination index, indicating deficits in both proactive and reactive control. Notably, moderation ana

Targeting exercise triggered irisin for therapeutic intervention of autism-associated social anxiety.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is frequently complicated by debilitating social anxiety, which exacerbates social impairments and reduces quality of life. This review explores the therapeutic potential of exercise-induced irisin, a myokine released during physical activity, in mitigating ASD-associated social anxiety. Irisin, derived from the cleavage of skeletal muscle FNDC5 protein, crosses the blood-brain barrier and modulates key neurobiological pathways implicated in ASD. It enhances neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity via BDNF upregulation, suppresses neuroinflammation by reprogramming

The relationship between the salience network and facial emotion recognition in social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is thought to involve the negative evaluation of facial emotions. Although imaging studies have examined this aspect, no study has investigated the relationship between resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) and facial emotion recognition in SAD. Hyperconnectivity in the salience network, particularly involving the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), has been reported to be associated with facial recognition and SAD. This study aimed to identify the association between rsFC and facial emotion recognition in patients with SAD. We included 21 patients with SAD an

Epigenetic aging in anxiety disorders: diagnostic subtype differences and associations with social functioning.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders, including subtypes such as social anxiety disorder (SAD), panic disorder (PD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), are among the most common psychiatric disorders. They are characterized by excessive fear, anxiety, and behavioral disturbances, leading to significant impairments in social and occupational functioning. While both accelerated and suppressed epigenetic aging have been reported in various psychiatric disorders, findings in anxiety disorders remain limited. We investigated diagnostic subtype-specific patterns of epigenetic age acceleration in anxie

Reliability and validity of four cognitive interpretation bias measures in the context of social anxiety.

People with social anxiety disorder tend to interpret ambiguous social information in a negative rather than positive manner. Such interpretation biases may cause and maintain anxiety symptoms. However, there is considerable variability in the observed effects across studies, with some not finding a relationship between interpretation biases and social anxiety. Poor psychometric properties of interpretation bias measures may explain such inconsistent findings. We evaluated the internal consistency, test-retest reliability, convergent validity, and concurrent validity of four interpretation bia

Self-other generalisation shapes social interaction and is disrupted in borderline personality disorder.

Generalising information from ourselves to others, and others to ourselves allows for both a dependable source of navigation and adaptability in interpersonal exchange. Disturbances to social development in sensitive periods can cause enduring and distressing damage to lasting healthy relationships. However, identifying the mechanisms of healthy exchange has been difficult. We introduce a theory of self-other generalisation tested with data from a three-phase social value orientation task - the Intentions Game. We involved humans with (n=50) and without (n=53) a diagnosis of borderline persona
