A partially shared magnitude system: Common and specialized neural substrates underlying spatial, numerical, and temporal arithmetic.

Magnitude, such as time, space and number, constitutes a foundational construction of perceptual and cognitive experience. A Theory of Magnitude proposes that these dimensions are processed by a shared magnitude system. However, it remains unclear how this system supports the manipulation of multiple continuous magnitude information, such as arithmetic operation across domains and whether it operates as a fully shared or partially specialized subsystem. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated magnitude arithmetic in numerical, spatial and temporal domains. Conjunction anal

Pain management in the perioperative orthogeriatric setting: Recommendations of the special interest group Orthogeriatrics of the German Geriatrics Society.

Management of perioperative pain in older adults can be challenging. Multimorbidity, functional decline or diminished physiological reserves, the corresponding polypharmacy, age-related pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic changes need to be considered. Pain assessment can be complicated by cognitive impairment and communication barriers. Older adults are at high risk of adverse consequences from surgery and undertreated pain as well as pharmacological overtreatment. Effective pain control in the perioperative period needs to be balanced against potential pharmacological harm. The aim of the or

The Making of Vulnerability. An ethnographic study exploring vulnerability in specialized outpatient care for pregnant persons with diabetes in Denmark.

This article examines how vulnerability is enacted in specialized outpatient care for pregnant persons with diabetes in Denmark. The analysis draws on ten months of ethnographic fieldwork, including observations of 79 consultations with 33 pregnant persons and around 20 health professionals. Rather than treating vulnerability as a stable trait or individual circumstance, we approach it as something done through administrative classifications, psychiatric histories, insulin thresholds, anticipatory reasoning, and cross-sectoral coordination. We trace how institutional formats shape which concer

Cavum Septum Pellucidum Enlargement in Special Operations Forces Members Is Associated with Lifetime Exposure to Large Explosives.

Cavum septum pellucidum (CSP) is a common neuroimaging finding linked to repetitive head trauma, yet its relationship to blast exposure among the military population remains elusive. Here, we investigated whether lifetime exposure to different types of blast is associated with CSP morphology among Special Operations Forces (SOF) personnel. We retrospectively analyzed 323 SOF members from the Comprehensive Brain Health and Trauma Program at Home Base who completed high-resolution 3T MRI and the Blast Exposure Threshold Survey (BETS), which quantifies lifetime exposure to explosive weapons acros

Fusing Specialized Surveys of Rare Populations to Larger Surveys for Generalized Inference: Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Mainstays of pharmacoepidemiology are large, representative, behavioral surveys, which focus on many drugs with few detailed behaviors. Smaller, targeted studies measure drug-specific patterns but without explicit generalizability assumptions; the evidence generated is narrow. OBJECTIVE: In this cross-sectional survey study, we outline an estimation framework based on data fusion and combine two surveys: a representative, anchor survey and an enriched survey about psychedelic drugs in the United States. Application of calibration weighting transports estimates from the enriched su

Diagnosis-based laboratory information system flags to support specialized transfusion protocols in sickle cell disease.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) frequently require specialized transfusion support. However, the blood bank cannot readily identify these patients without a time-prohibitive chart review. To improve adherence to evidence-based practices involving the transfusion of patients with SCD, we developed a laboratory information system (LIS)-integrated flagging system. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Using a predefined set of SCD-related International Classification of Diseases-10 diagnosis codes, laboratory-facing flags were implemented within the LIS. Flags were displayed in multiple w

Videoconferencing acceptance and commitment therapy for parents of children with special health care needs: A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with special health care needs endure substantial psychological distress, a challenge frequently encountered in nursing practice. While nurses are ideally positioned to identify and support these families, they require access to effective, scalable interventions that can be integrated into care pathways. This study investigated a task-shifting model, testing whether a brief, videoconferencing-delivered Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy programme is effective when delivered by trained paraprofessionals. OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of a paraprofe
