OBJECTIVE: Hypophosphatasia (HPP; MIM241510) is a rare inborn error of bone metabolism of recessive inheritance. It is caused by mutations in the gene encoding the tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase. Apart from problems in bone mineralization, growth failure, and premature loss of decidual teeth, the infantile and the childhood types of HPP are associated with premature fusion of cranial sutures.

UNLABELLED: Premature closure of cranial sutures (primary craniosynostosis) in children leads to characteristic skull deformities and prevents the constricted brain from growing normally. The study of four cloverleaf skulls (two fetuses, one infant, and a young adult) concerns two Pfeiffer syndromes, a thanatophoric dysplasia and an isolated case. Clinical and radiologic examinations showed malformations at the level of the calvarium, the base, orbital cavities, and, sometimes, limb abnormalities. Correlations between these findings and the microradiographic analysis of nondemineralized sections elucidate this trilobular appearance of the skull. Premature temporoparietal suture closure terminates at a constricted surface of the lateral sides of the skull during the fetal life.

In an animal experiment, excellent results were obtained using both microsurgical mucosa and all-layer, single-knot polyglactin (8/0 Vicryl) suture of the ureter. These results motivated clinical use of this microsurgical operative technique on five infants (4-9 months of age) with stenosis of the pelvis outlet. The aim of this study is to describe a modified technique for internal refixation of dislocated scleral-sutured polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) intraocular lenses (IOLs) with eyelets. In metopic and coronal suture synostosis, the involved bone centers are abnormally situated just next to the affected suture. Bone centers are the starting point of ossification during embryogenesis from which bone growth spreads radially.
