Frequency of Blood-tissue Parasitic Infections in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis, as Compared to their Family Members.

BACKGROUND: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic demyelinating disease of the central nervous system which has been identifies more prevalent in economically developed countries than in the developing countries. Low prevalence of parasitic infections (which can activate immune response and prevent or modulate damage to host antigens) in these areas is among the possible responsible factors for such a difference. In this study we aimed to compare frequency of blood-tissue parasitic infections in patients with MS, as compared to their healthy family members. METHODS: This study was conducted on

[New World of Vascular-Function Developed with CAVI, PWV and ABI].

Arteriosclerotic diseases are becoming a serious problem all over the world. However, the evaluation of arteriosclerosis quantitatively and non-invasively has been very difficult. Pulse-wave velocities have been used globally. Their significance was mostly established, but the problem is that PWV depends on the blood pressure at the time of measurement. The cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) was recently presented and produced from the stiffness parameter beta theory and Bramwell-Hill's equation. CAVI was independent from the blood pressure at the time of measurement. CAVI showed high values i

Bullous pemphigoid autoantibodies directly induce blister formation without complement activation.

Complement activation and subsequent recruitment of inflammatory cells at the dermal/epidermal junction are thought to be essential for blister formation in bullous pemphigoid (BP), an autoimmune blistering disease induced by autoantibodies against type XVII collagen (COL17); however, this theory does not fully explain the pathological features of BP. Recently, the involvement of complement-independent pathways has been proposed. To directly address the question of the necessity of the complement activation in blister formation, we generated C3-deficient COL17-humanized mice. First, we show th

[Dementia in families with a Turkish migration background. Organization and characteristics of domestic care arrangements].

BACKROUND: Until recently public health and health services research has not been concerned with people suffering from dementia with a Turkish migration background as a priority. There is little evidence about the situation of this population; however, it is known that these individuals almost always live with their families and are cared for by their families generally without seeking professional support. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the organization and characteristics of home-based care arrangements for people suffering from dementia with a Turkish migration background fr

Non-linear HRV indices under autonomic nervous system blockade.

Heart rate variability (HRV) has been studied as a non-invasive technique to characterize the autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulation of the heart. Non-linear methods based on chaos theory have been used during the last decades as markers for risk stratification. However, interpretation of these nonlinear methods in terms of sympathetic and parasympathetic activity is not fully established. In this work we study linear and non-linear HRV indices during ANS blockades in order to assess their relation with sympathetic and parasympathetic activities. Power spectral content in low frequency (0.0

A new interpretative paradigm for Conformational Protein Diseases.

Conformational Protein Diseases (CPDs) comprise over forty clinically and pathologically diverse disorders in which specific altered proteins accumulate in cells or tissues of the body. The most studied are Alzheimerβ's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, prion diseases, inclusion body myopathy, and the systemic amyloidoses. They are characterised by three dimensional conformational alterations, which are often rich in β- structure. Proteins in this non-native conformation are highly stable, resistant to degradation, and have an enhanced tendency

Inflammatory mechanisms in HIV-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a severe complication of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and a leading major cause of death when present. HIV-PAH could be the consequence of multiple hits including the direct effects of HIV proteins, use of illicit drugs, and chronic inflammation. Indeed, HIV infection has long been identified as an immunosuppressive disease but, since the advent of highly active antiretroviral treatments (HAART), HIV infection is considered as an inflammatory disease in which vascular complications have become a major cause of morbidity and death. On the function of placental corticotropin-releasing hormone: a role in maternal-fetal conflicts over blood glucose concentrations.

Throughout the second and third trimesters, the human placenta (and the placenta in other anthropoid primates) produces substantial quantities of corticotropin-releasing hormone (placental CRH), most of which is secreted into the maternal bloodstream. During pregnancy, CRH concentrations rise over 1000-fold. The advantages that led selection to favour placental CRH production and secretion are not yet fully understood. Placental CRH stimulates the production of maternal adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) and cortisol, leading to substantial increases in maternal serum cortisol levels during th

Respiratory sinus arrhythmia and auditory processing in autism: modifiable deficits of an integrated social engagement system?

The current study evaluated processes underlying two common symptoms (i.e., state regulation problems and deficits in auditory processing) associated with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders. Although these symptoms have been treated in the literature as unrelated, when informed by the Polyvagal Theory, these symptoms may be viewed as the predictable consequences of depressed neural regulation of an integrated social engagement system, in which there is down regulation of neural influences to the heart (i.e., via the vagus) and to the middle ear muscles (i.e., via the facial and trigemina

Lack of correlation of overnight monitoring data and lumbar infusion data in iNPH patients.

OBJECTIVE: Hydrodynamic theories of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) favor a decrease in compliance as an important underlying principle of the disease's immanent pathophysiology. ICP overnight monitoring (ONM) and lumbar infusion study (LIS) are both established methods that aid as supplemental tests in the selection of shunt-responsive patients. Pulse wave amplitude (AMP) and RAP index are measures derived from ONM and are related to intracranial compliance. Elastance (E) and pressure volume index (PVI), parameters derived from LIS, also describe the compliance of the system.

Hidradenitis suppurativa: a review of cause and treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic or relapsing inflammatory cutaneous disorder manifested by recurrent formation of abscesses, fistulating sinus and scarring in the apocrine-gland-bearing skin. This review discusses the different aetiological theories and management opportunities. RECENT FINDINGS: Current understanding of the pathogenesis suggests that hyperkeratosis of the infundibulum, leading to follicular occlusion of the pilosebaceous unit plays a role. Bacterial infection with staphylococci, Escherichia coli and streptococcus is considered as a secondary event in

Epigenetics of chronic rhinosinusitis and the role of the eosinophil.

BACKGROUND: One theory for the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) involves aberration in the expression of genes that maintain the sinonasal innate immune system. We propose that the alteration in gene expression seen in CRSwNP is a result of oxidative byproducts of eosinophils. Activated eosinophils and neutrophils may lead to the production of hypobromous acid (HOBr) and hypochlorous acid (HOCL) and the posttranslational modification products 5-bromocytosine (5BrC) and 5-chlorocytosine (5ClC), respectively. 5BrC and 5ClC may cause aberrant methylation of cytosi

Anxiety, movement kinematics, and visual attention in elite-level performers.

We tested the predictions of Attentional Control Theory (ACT) by examining the effect of anxiety on attention control and the subsequent influence on both performance effectiveness and performance efficiency within a perceptual-motor context. A sample (N = 16) of elite shotgun shooters was tested under counterbalanced low (practice) and high (competition) anxiety conditions. A head-mounted, corneal reflection system allowed point of gaze to be calculated in relation to the scene, while motion of the gun was evaluated using markers placed on the barrel which were captured by two stationary came

The significant other history: an interpersonal-emotional history procedure used with the early-onset chronically depressed patient.

An interpersonal-emotional history procedure, the Significant Other History, is administered to the early-onset chronically depressed patient during the second therapy session in the Cognitive Behavioral Analysis System of Psychotherapy (CBASP). Patients are asked to name up to six significant others and answer two questions: (1) What was it like growing up with or being around this person? (2) What is the emotional "stamp" you take from this relationship that informs who you are today? An interpersonal-emotional theme reflecting the early learning history of the patient is derived from these

Barriers to and facilitators of adherence to pediatric antiretroviral therapy in a sub-Saharan setting: insights from a qualitative study.

Despite the need for HIV-positive children to adhere effectively to antiretroviral treatment (ART), a guiding theory for pediatric ART in resource-limited settings is still missing. Understanding factors that influence pediatric ART adherence is critical to developing adequate strategies. In-depth qualitative interviews were undertaken in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with 20 sets of HIV disclosed and nondisclosed children along with respective caregivers to better characterize barriers, facilitators, and adherence experiences in children taking ART. Commonly cited barriers inclu

Therapeutic potential of adipose tissue-derived stem cells for liver failure according to the transplantation routes.

PURPOSE: Even though adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs) have been spotlighted as a possible alternative for liver transplantation in an experimental setting, the mechanism by which ADSCs improve liver dysfunction remains poorly characterized. The objective of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic ability of undifferentiated ADSCs, and find a few clues on how ADSCs alleviate liver damage by comparing the transplantation routes. METHODS: In vitro generated human ADSCs were checked for surface markers and stage-specific genes for characterization. Afterwards, they were transplanted i

A case of simultaneous, biopsy-proven, classic, ANCA-positive Wegener's granulomatosis and anti-GBM disease, but without detectable circulating anti-GBM antibodies.

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a systemic, necrotizing, granulomatous vasculitis of unknown etiology. Approximately 75% of cases present as classic WG with both pulmonary and renal involvement, while the remaining 25% of patients present with a limited form with either predominantly upper or lower respiratory tract symptoms. Ninety percent of WG patients have circulating anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA), and approximately 10% have both circulating ANCA antibodies and concomitant anti-glomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) disease on renal biopsy. Virtually all of these patients

Correlations between auditory structures and hearing sensitivity in non-human primates.

Primates show distinctions in hearing sensitivity and auditory morphology that generally follow phylogenetic patterns. However, few previous studies have attempted to investigate how differences in primate hearing are directly related to differences in ear morphology. This research helps fill this void by exploring the form-to-function relationships of the auditory system in a phylogenetically broad sample of non-human primates. Numerous structures from the outer, middle, and inner ears were measured in taxa with known hearing capabilities. The structures investigated include the overall size
