Do arthropods feel anxious during molts?

The molting process of arthropods, chiefly controlled by ecdysteroids, is generally considered very stressful. Our previous investigations have shown that crayfish, after having experienced stressful situations, display anxiety-like behavior (ALB), characterized by aversion to light in a dark/light plus-maze (DLPM). In the present experiments, the spontaneous exploratory behavior of isolated crayfish was analyzed in a DLPM at different stages of their molt cycle. All tested animals displayed transitory aversion to light similar to ALB, before and, mostly, after molting, but not during inter-mo

Web-Based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Mental Health Problems in College Students: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

There are significant challenges in addressing the mental health needs of college students. The current study tested an acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), web-based self-help program to treat a broad range of psychological problems students struggle with. A sample of 79 college students was randomized to web-based ACT or a waitlist condition, with assessments at baseline and posttreatment. Results indicated adequate acceptability and program engagement for the ACT website. Relative to waitlist, participants receiving ACT improved on overall distress, general anxiety, social anxiety, depr

Reduced fear memory and anxiety-like behavior in mice lacking formylpeptide receptor 1.

N-formylpeptide receptor 1 (FPR1) is a G protein-coupled receptor that mediates pro-inflammatory chemotactic responses by phagocytic leukocytes to N-formylpeptides produced by bacteria or mitochondria. Mice lacking Fpr1 (Fpr1 (-/-) mice) have increased susceptibility to challenge with certain bacteria. FPR1 is also a receptor for annexin-1, which mediates the anti-inflammatory effects of glucocorticoids as well as negative feedback by glucocorticoids of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis. However, homeostatic functions of FPR1 in the neuroendocrine system have not previously been d

Visual working memory and threat monitoring: Spider fearfuls show disorder-specific change detection.

Previous studies of biased information processing in anxiety addressed biases of attention and memory, but little is known about the processes taking place between them: visual working memory (VWM) and monitoring of threat. We investigated these processes with a change detection paradigm. In Experiment 1, spider fearfuls (SF) and non-anxious controls (NAC) judged two subsequently presented displays as same or different. The displays consisted of several pictures, one of which could depict a spider. In Experiment 2, SF and NAC, both without snake fear, were tested with displays including either

Social anxiety across ethnicity: a confirmatory factor analysis of the FNE and SAD.

Previous research has established that social anxiety occurs at different rates in African American and European American populations (Grant et al., 2005), while psychometric investigations of widely used measures of psychopathology show differences in factor structure based on ethnic background (Carter, Miller, Sbrocco, Suchday, & Lewis, 1999; Chapman, Williams, Mast, & Woodruff-Borden, 2009). The current study examined response characteristics of 1276 African American and European American undergraduates completing the Fear of Negative Evaluation and Social Avoidance and Distress Scales (Wat

Factors related to quality-of-life pattern changes in recipients of implantable defibrillators.

PURPOSE: The implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) has proven life-saving, yet it is important to understand its psychological effects on recipients. This study examined longitudinal changes in patterns of quality-of-life (QOL) scores in the first 3 months after an implant, and determined what variables tested as predictors of patterns. METHODS: This longitudinal, prospective, descriptive, correlational survey study followed 80 ICD patients, with data collection at a baseline preinsertion, and 1 and 3 months after implant. RESULTS: Findings revealed eight patterns of QOL change that w

Event-level associations between affect, alcohol intoxication, and acute dependence symptoms: Effects of urgency, self-control, and drinking experience.

This study used experience sampling to examine within-person associations between positive affect, anxiety, sadness, and hostility and two outcomes: alcohol intoxication and acute dependence symptoms. We examined the role of urgency, premeditation, and perseverance in predicting the alcohol outcomes and tested whether the affective associations varied as a function of urgency. Participants completed baseline assessments and 21 days of experience sampling on PDAs. Hypotheses were partially confirmed. Positive affect was positively, and sadness inversely, associated with intoxication. Hostility

A comparative clinical study of the effects of the traditional Chinese medicine Jinniu capsules and lofexidine on acute heroin withdrawal symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Jinniu capsules, comprised of herbs and marine product extracts, are traditionally used in Chinese medicine. In this randomized multicenter clinical trial we evaluated the efficacy and safety of Jinniu capsules used to treat the symptoms of heroin withdrawal, as compared with lofexidine. METHODS: Two hundred and twelve patients with heroin dependence were randomly assigned to the Jinniu capsule or lofexidine treatment groups during a 10-day double-blind clinical trial. The severity of their opiate withdrawal symptoms was measured daily for 10 days. Anxiety was measured on days 0, 5

Long-lasting effects of neonatal ionizing radiation exposure on spatial memory and anxiety-like behavior.

Neonatal ionizing radiation exposure has been shown to induce a cerebellar cytoarchitecture disarrangement. Since cerebellar abnormalities have been linked to an impairment of behavioral functions, the aim of the present work was to investigate whether exposure of developing rats to ionizing radiations can produce behavioral deficits in the adult. Male Wistar rats were X-irradiated with 5Gy within 48h after birth and were tested in a radial maze and in an open field at 30 and 90 days post irradiation. Irradiated rats showed significative changes in spatial, exploratory, and procedural paramete

Pindolol potentiation of paroxetine for generalized social phobia: a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study.

OBJECTIVE: The effectiveness of pindolol as an adjunctive treatment to boost response to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in patients with generalized social phobia was tested. METHOD: A double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design was used to compare addition of 5 mg of pindolol t.i.d. or placebo for 4 weeks to a steady paroxetine dose. Subjects were 14 patients with generalized social phobia who were less than "very much improved" on the Clinical Global Impression scale after at least 10 weeks of treatment with a maximally tolerated dose of paroxetine. Concurrent treatment with verapamil prevents diazepam withdrawal-induced anxiety, in the absence of altered calcium flux in cortical synaptosomes.

Rats, chronically treated with diazepam (4 mg/kg/day) for 28 days, displayed increased anxiety when tested in the elevated plus-maze, 42 hr after the last dose. This anxiogenic withdrawal response was entirely prevented by the concurrent administration of the calcium channel antagonist, verapamil. No anxiolytic effect of chronic administration of verapamil was observed in vehicle-treated rats. To investigate the possibility that increased calcium function in nerve terminals might underlie diazepam withdrawal-induced anxiety, the uptake by cortical synaptosomes of 45Ca2+ was studied. Dyspnea, anxiety, and depression in chronic respiratory impairment.

In order to examine the relationship of dyspnea to anxiety and depression, the authors rated dyspnea using several methods in 50 patients with chronic respiratory impairment. Anxiety and depression were measured by the Symptom Checklist-90 and the Symptom Questionnaire. Results varied with the method of assessing dyspnea. Physician-rated dyspnea was significantly associated with patients' self-ratings of breathlessness as well as with pulmonary function tests, but not with any of the self-rating scales of emotions. Self-rated breathlessness was significantly associated with self-rated depressi

Pain, anxiety, and contingent negative variation: a clinical and pharmacological study.

Contingent negative variation (CNV) behavior was studied in 16 volunteers who were suffering from spontaneous recurrent pain syndromes (idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, classic migraine). The subjects were divided into two groups, "more anxious" and "less anxious," based on psychometric tests (MMPI and STAI X2). The CNV recordings were carried out, respectively, in basal resting state, during an episode of pain, while under anxiolytic treatment, and lastly, during an episode of pain while under anxiolytic therapy. CNV voltage decrease and frequent appearance of postimperative negative variatio

The prevalence of psychiatric disorders among cancer patients.

Two hundred fifteen randomly accessed cancer patients who were new admissions to three collaborating cancer centers were examined for the presence of formal psychiatric disorder. Each patient was assessed in a common protocol via a psychiatric interview and standardized psychological tests. The American Psychiatric Association's DSM-III diagnostic system was used in making the diagnoses. Results indicated that 47% of the patients received a DSM-III diagnosis, with 44% being diagnosed as manifesting a clinical syndrome and 3% with personality disorders. Approximately 68% of the psychiatric diag

Emotion Regulation Processes Related to Emotional Symptoms and Their Severity in a Clinical Primary Care Sample.

Emotion regulation (ER) processes have been studied as factors for the development and treatment of emotional disorders (EDs). The aim of this descriptive study was to determine how worry, rumination, negative metacognition, cognitive biases, and adaptive ER strategies contribute to the change in specific ED symptoms and their severity in a sample of adult primary care patients (N = 139). Different self-reported instruments were applied to assess symptoms and the use of the aforementioned ER processes. To analyse the data, Spearman correlations and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to examine rel

Screening for anxiety and depression: validation of the Patient Health Questionnaire for Depression and Anxiety (PHQ-4) in a large sample of rehabilitation patients.

PURPOSE: Anxiety and depression are the most prevalent mental disorders in rehabilitation populations and negatively impact rehabilitation outcomes. The Patient Health Questionnaire for Depression and Anxiety (PHQ-4) is an ultra-brief screening instrument validated for general and primary care populations. We validated the PHQ-4 for the first time for the rehabilitation setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study sample consisted of 66,412 patients attending multimodal inpatient rehabilitation, covering various medical indications. To validate the PHQ-4's factorial validity, we conducted confir

Juvenile influenza can impair myelin development and adult behavior through chemokine signaling in mice.

Brain development, especially developmental myelination, continues through young adulthood. Concordantly, children may be particularly vulnerable to neural-immune challenges. To investigate the consequences of major childhood immune challenges, juvenile mice were exposed to respiratory influenza (H1N1) infection. White matter-specific microglial reactivity accompanied by oligodendrocyte loss was evident until two months following infection. Mice exhibited hyperlocomotion and impaired attention, but not anxiety-like behavior, at one month following infection. Linking the oligodendroglial and be

Peer victimization and adjustment: Moderation by perceptions of same-race and other-race classmates' behavior.

Drawing on the "social misfit" hypothesis, this study tested whether peer victimization is more predictive of maladjustment when children have many same-race classmates who they view as low in aggression. Also accounted for were children's race, the racial composition of the classroom, and children's perceptions of other-race peers. Data were collected in the fall, winter, and spring of a school year from 1,424 4th and 5th grade children (Mage = 10.06; SDage = 0.67; Rangeage = 8.43-13.03; 683 girls; 741 boys; 39.61% Black; 60.39% White) in the Southeastern United States. Emotional and Cognitive Effects of Simulated Temporary Hearing Deficit with Healthy Adults.

Background/Objectives: Accumulation of cerumen (earwax) in the auditory canal is a common condition, particularly in children and older adults, and often causes temporary hearing loss. While chronic hearing loss is known to affect mood and cognition, little is known about the psychological impact of short-term auditory deprivation. This pilot study aimed to examine the emotional and cognitive effects of simulated temporary hearing loss. Methods: Thirty healthy adults (16 females, aged 18-60) participated. Temporary hearing loss was simulated by placing earplugs in both ears for two hours. Part

Pragmatic measurement of mechanisms: Does use of coping strategies mediate the effects of a teacher stress intervention?

Supporting teachers to cope with occupational stress is an important area of research. Many studies have examined the initial efficacy of teacher stress interventions; however, none have tested potential causal mechanisms. A previous study of a bibliotherapy teacher stress intervention based in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) revealed positive effects on stress, coping, depression, and anxiety (n = 52, Eddy et al., 2022). The purpose of the present study was to examine the use of coping strategies as a mediator of treatment effects in the previously reported randomized control trial study.
