Iodine deficiency is widely known to be the main cause of nodular goiter (NG). In iodine deficient areas subclinical and overt hyperthyroidism is the major cause of morbidity and it is mainly due to toxic NG rather than Graves' disease. Toxic NG, including toxic multinodular goiter and toxic thyroid adenoma is usually encountered in subjects with long-standing NG, in whom thyrotoxicosis is usually preceded by a long phase of euthyroidism and then subclinical hyperthyroidsm (abnormally low TSH with normal circulating thyroid hormones). Epidemiological studies indicate that, compared to Graves'

OBJECTIVES: Studies of thyroid cancer related to the Chernobyl accident have focused on children as they are the most vulnerable group with the highest risk of developing radiation-associated cancer. In contrast, our research aimed to look at the clinical and pathological features of patients with post-Chernobyl papillary thyroid carcinoma that were 2 years old or less at the time of the Chernobyl accident.
DESIGN: The study subjects were patients (n = 359) aged 0 to 2 at the time of the Chernobyl accident and aged ≥19 years at presentation/surgery who were treated in Belarus for papillary th

Thyrotropin receptor autoantibodies (TSHR-Abs) of the stimulating variety are the hallmark of Graves' disease. The presence of immune defects leading to synthesis of TSHR-Abs causes hyperthyroidism and is associated with other extrathyroidal manifestations. Further characterization of these antibodies has now been made possible by the generation of monoclonal antibodies with this unique stimulating capacity as well as similar TSHR-Abs not associated with hyperthyroidism. Their present classification divides TSHR-Abs into stimulating, blocking (competing with TSH binding) and neutral (no signal

The management of thyroid nodules in patients with Graves' disease remains an issue both of concern and controversy for those who care for these patients. At one time, thyroid cancer in patients with thyrotoxicosis was considered to be extremely rare, but this perception has proven to be incorrect. Several studies have demonstrated both an increased incidence of nodules and of thyroid cancer in patients with Graves' disease, with cancer rates varying from as low as 1% to as high as 9% of cases. These divergent estimates of malignancy rates in Graves' disease have predictably led to variability

The aim of the present work was to clarify whether the activities of selenoenzymes can serve as markers for different tumors or goiters, as classified by histological criteria. The following parameters were determined: 1) selenium content of plasma (Se), 2) activities of the selenoenzymes: plasma glutathione peroxidase (plGSHPx), cytosolic glutathione peroxidase (cGSHPx), type I and type II iodothyronine deiodinases (ID-I, ID-II), thioredoxin reductase (THRR) in human thyroid tissues. The material came from follicular neoplasm, papillary carcinoma, struma nodosa, struma lymphomatosis Hashimoto

BACKGROUND: In the works of various authors, performed with the help of morphometry, an assessment of cell changes was carried out, as a rule, by one sign of their atypia (e.g. area of cell nuclei). Moreover, the selective analysis of morphometric data for certain nosologic forms was performed. Such an approach allowed researchers to develop only additional diagnostic criteria of thyroid carcinoma. At the same time, the use of a set of quantitative signs of cell atypia as a criterion for tumor malignancy made it possible to improve oncologic diagnosis. In this study, which is a first step in t

OBJECTIVE: There is thought to be an association between hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and autoimmune diseases. This retrospective longitudinal cohort study looked to identify whether certain autoimmune diseases or autoantibody specificities are more closely associated with HS than others and whether such associations are related to the severity of HS.
METHODS: Patients were identified using the SlicerDicer search tool in Epic from 1 January 2010 to 15 August 2020. Search criteria included HS diagnosis by ICD-10 code (L73.2) and at least one visit to the dermatology department. Charts were re

In response to Huang et al., we clarify the take-home message of our study on autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome (APS) in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Existing guidelines recommend screening T1DM patients for thyroid and celiac diseases. When positive, there is a lack of guidance on how to proceed. Nevertheless, if T1DM patients do have AITD or celiac disease, they qualify for an APS diagnosis, which signals a high pretest probability for additional autoimmunity. Our data show that among 198 patients meeting APS criteria at baseline, only 17/198 (8.6%) had a formal APS diagnosis documented

Autoimmune diseases are frequently associated with neurological and cognitive dysfunction. Advances in neuroimaging and graph theory-based connectomics have enabled investigation of large-scale brain network alterations across autoimmune conditions. This review synthesizes structural and functional network studies in representative diseases, including multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, systemic lupus erythematosus, thyroid eye disease, type 1 diabetes mellitus, and inflammatory bowel disease. Across these disorders, studies commonly report reduced global and local effi

Patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, autoimmune thyroid disease, Addison's disease, and alopecia areata are at increased risk of celiac disease. We investigated whether patients with more than one autoimmune endocrinologic disorder are even more susceptible to celiac disease or have celiac-type mucosal inflammation. All 62 patients found to have such multiple diseases in 1994-1996 were investigated. Small bowel biopsy was performed on all voluntary nonceliac subjects. The villous structure and density of intraepithelial lymphocytes were examined, and HLA-DQ alleles were determine

We have investigated the presence and clinical implications of maternal vascular lesions and chronic villitis of unknown etiology (CVUE) in 18 placentas of 15 mothers with several autoimmune diseases (AD), including, for the first time, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, autoimmune thyroid diseases, and multiple sclerosis. The group with AD had significantly more maternal vascular lesions and CVUE than the control group. We did not find lesions that could be attributed to any of the diseases in particular. The histopathologic picture was similar in these diseases, although there appears to b

RATIONALE: ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV) is an autoimmune disease. Renal involvement in AAV can manifest as crescentic glomerulonephritis (CGN), which can lead to rapidly progressive renal failure. AAV with crescentic glomerulonephritis complicated and papillary thyroid carcinoma remains rare. The purpose of this report was to enhance the understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of AAV combined with crescentic glomerulonephritis and papillary thyroid carcinoma, reduce misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis, and for the patient with AAV, attention should be paid to screening for cancer, and m

BACKGROUND: Thyroid dysfunction is among the most common autoimmune diseases and immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-induced immune-related adverse events (irAE). We determined the association between longitudinal thyroid function and clinical outcomes in patients treated with ICI.
METHODS: We identified all patients treated with ICI at UT Southwestern Medical Center from January 1, 2011, through December 31, 2020. We defined normal thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (FT4) levels according to institutional reference range. We defined clinical thyroid dysfunction using establis

The evaluation of the prevalence of hypoaldosteronism and (autoimmune) hypothyroidism in dogs with hypoadrenocorticismLeft over serum samples from 29 dogs with confirmed hypoadrenocorticism were analyzed. Aldosterone concentrations were determined in 0 h- and 1 h samples of the ACTH-stimulation test. Total T4 concentration (TT4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroglobuline antibodies (TgAA) were determined at 0 h and 1 h following the administration of ACTH. Patient data base was searched retrospectively for data on neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio as well as sodium (Na), potassium (K),

BACKGROUND: Whether Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) affects the lymph node metastasis of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) remains uncertain. The diagnostic criteria for HT differed in previous studies. Our study focused on analysing the influence of HT on PTC lymph node metastasis (LNM) with stringent diagnostic criteria for HT.
METHODS: A total of 444 patients diagnosed with PTC from 2019 to 2020 were enrolled and divided into two groups: HT group and non-HT group. Diagnostic criteria of HT were as follows: thyroid peroxidase antibody (+) and postoperative histopathology of Hashimoto's disease

We present the case of a 24-year-old male, who received a minor ABO-incompatible allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT, blood group O+ ⟶ A+) from an HLA-matched unrelated female donor, as consolidation therapy for relapsed precursor-B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The donor had a known history of Hashimoto's thyroiditis before HSCT. At day +10 posttransplant, the patient developed severe hemolysis, which required emergent red blood cell exchange. Additionally, about a year posttransplant, he had circulating antithyroglobulin antibodies, decreased free-T4 (fT4) and increased

OBJECTIVE: To determine the circulatory miRNA expression levels in patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) at the time of diagnosis and follow-up period compared with healthy controls.
METHODS: We collected blood samples from 34 patients with HT (4 males and 30 females) at the time of first diagnosis (Group P) and euthyroid period (Group E). Thirty-three healthy controls (Group H) blood samples were also included in the study. Expression levels of five different circulating miRNAs (miR-22, miR-141, miR-155, miR-375, miR-451) were evaluated using real-time polymerase chain reaction.

CONTEXT: Alemtuzumab (ALZ), a CD52 monoclonal antibody, is highly efficacious in multiple sclerosis; however, side effects are common. Autoimmune thyroid disease (Graves' disease and Hashimoto thyroiditis) is a well-known complication of ALZ. Treatment of ALZ-induced Graves' disease can be challenging, and even more difficult during pregnancy.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case of severe ALZ-induced Graves' disease with a rapid increase in thyrotropin receptor antibodies (TRAb 240 IU/L) and thyrotoxicosis in early pregnancy. Treatment with high doses of antithyroid medication was needed. The

Hashimoto's encephalopathy is an encephalitis of presumed autoimmune origin characterized by the presence of autoantibodies against thyroid proteins. We present a case of a young patient with pre-existing Hashimoto's thyroiditis and progressive cognitive complaints, absence-like episodes, and sporadic bilateral epileptiform frontal and frontotemporal activity. No abnormalities were observed during the neurological examination and on MRI. Antibodies to thyroid peroxidase (TPO) were elevated and remained positive while the symptoms were present. Levothyroxine and methylprednisolone did not ameli
