CONTEXT: Understanding tooth biomechanics is essential for creating effective and durable dental restorations. While intact teeth are inherently resilient, cavity preparation compromises structural integrity, increasing fracture risk.
AIMS: This study utilized finite element analysis (FEA), the dominant in silico method for biomechanical investigation, to evaluate how cavity size influences stress and strain distribution in a three-dimensional mandibular molar model derived from micro-computed tomography.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: An FEA simulation was conducted on three tooth models (intact too

INTRODUCTION: Prevention of tooth loss contributes to an extended life expectancy, namely longevity. Aging-related oral hypofunction, including tooth loss, markedly increases the risks of functional disorder and mortality. Dysbiosis of the oral microbiome has recently been associated with various diseases, such as liver cirrhosis, pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease. Therefore, the relationship between the oral microbiome and systemic health has been attracting increasing attention. In the present study, we examined oral function and the oral microbiome in the

INTRODUCTION: In many cases, the replanted teeth may undergo resorption or ankyloses. Recent studies show that autologous platelet concentrates (APCs) may improve the outcomes of tooth replantation. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize and critically appraise the currently available literature on the use of APCs before tooth replantation.
METHODOLOGY: An electronic search was conducted on the following research databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, ISI Web of Science, EMBASE and Scopus. The following medical subject heading (MeSH) keywords used were: ((tooth replantation) OR (replanted too

BACKGROUND: An extra tooth in the normal tooth sequence in any region of the dental arch is regarded as a supernumerary tooth (SNT). Due to the large variation in location and morphology, the extraction of impacted SNTs is an extensive and complex procedure with high risks of several complications. This report presents a rare case of seven impacted SNTs in the bilateral upper and lower arch that were successfully extracted with the use of digital positioning guide plates.
CASE SUMMARY: In January 2022, a 21-year-old male was referred to our department with a chief complaint of pain in relatio

Pushing a tooth results in movement of the tooth and reflex inhibition of activity in jaw-closing muscles. The aims of this study were to determine how much tooth movement is required to elicit such reflexes and whether this is dependent on the point of force application to the tooth. Eight experiments were performed on six volunteer subjects. Electromyograms (EMGs) were recorded from a masseter muscle while the subjects produced approximately 12.5 % of the EMG associated with maximal clenching. Reflexes were evoked by pushing at two positions (incisal and cervical) on an upper central incisor

Intrusive luxation is an injury involving the axial displacement of a tooth into the alveolar socket. This paper describes apexification using calcium hydroxide medicaments of an immature permanent central incisor in which spontaneous re-eruption as well as severe inflammatory external root resorption was observed following traumatic intrusion. A 10-year-old boy was referred to the Department of Pediatric Dentistry 3 days after having fallen at school. Intraoral examination revealed intrusive luxation and an enamel-dentin crown fracture of the maxillary left central incisor (Tooth 21). The too

The paper presents the results on hereditary and environmental dental findings in identification of human remains exhumed from mass graves in the Republic of Croatia. The total of 17,880 teeth from all the categories (incisors, canines, premolars and molars) was examined. Hereditary findings of the teeth such as shape, size, position, as well as age were used in all of the cases confirming and completing the identification. In only 15% of the cases they were the starting points for the identification that would be later confirmed with another 3-5 traditional identification procedures. Disturba

The influence of occlusal loading on periodontal fibroblasts was investigated in hypoloaded (shortened out of occlusion), functionally loaded and hyperloaded (constant linguointrusive mechanical loads of 9.4 +/- 0.06 g) lower left rat incisors. One hour following injection of 3H-thymidine, half of the animals in each group were killed, while the remaining rats were killed 2 weeks later. The decalcified incisors were embedded in glycolmethacrylate and sectioned (2 microns) serially, perpendicularly to the long tooth axis. Labeled and unlabeled fibroblasts in the tooth-related periodontal ligame

Tipping movement in orthodontic therapy, which is often performed even in the absence of the adjacent tooth, is represented by the movement following tooth extraction. Such tipping movement in the absence of the adjacent tooth depends not only upon the magnitude of orthodontic force as classified into Stoner 4D, but also upon the condition of the extracted wounds. To evaluate the clinical applicability of HAp-packing used in combination with tipping movement, histopathological investigation was performed in the periodontal tissue with tipping movement toward the adjacent to HAp-packed socket.

It is well documented that uptake of various trace elements take place during tooth development. The purpose of this experiment was to analyze the uptake amount of these various trace elements, in particular Cd, Zn, Pb and Cu throughout the tooth germ formation all the way up to the eruption stage. Bovine permanent tooth germs were used in this experiment. Instead of the conventional morphologic stages, further subdivision into eight groups were employed. The resultant findings were as follows: 1) Uptake of Cd and Zn were verified during the root development to early tooth eruption stage in en

Dental fluorosis occurs from overingestion of fluoride during tooth formation. However, there is little evidence in the literature on whether or how fluorosis prevalence and severity change over time after tooth eruption. Permanent dentition dental examinations were conducted at ages 9, 13, 17, and 23 as part of the Iowa Fluoride Study, which has followed a cohort from birth. Fluorosis was assessed using the Fluorosis Risk Index (FRI) and Russell's criteria for differential diagnosis. Measures of fluorosis severity at the person and tooth level were calculated: second highest FRI score at the

Teeth develop in the mammalian embryo via a series of interactions between odontogenic epithelium and neural crest-derived ectomesenchyme of the early jaw primordia. The molecular interactions required to generate a tooth are mediated by families of signalling molecules, which often act reiteratively in both a temporal and spatial manner. Whilst considerable information is now available on how these molecules interact to produce an individual tooth, much less is known about the processes that control overall tooth number within the dentition. However, a number of mouse models are now starting

The purpose of this study is to observe and compare growth and development in the dental arch, the alveolar process, and the palate in reference to dental age, which is based on tooth emergence, and chronological age. Subjects consisted of serial dental casts taken at two-month intervals from 40 children (20 males and 20 females) with normal occlusion in permanent dentition. In terms of dental age, observations were made for a total of two years, one year before and one year after the tooth emergence of first premolar and second premolar. In terms of chronological age, observations were made f

This case report describes the successful autotransplantation of a mandibular left third molar (tooth 38) to replace a non-restorable mandibular left first molar (tooth 36) in a 38-year-old female patient who presented with severe pain due to extensive caries and periapical pathology. Preoperative intraoral periapical radiographs via radiovisiography (RVG) confirmed the suitability of tooth 38 as a donor owing to its vitality and compatible root morphology. The procedure involved atraumatic extraction of tooth 36, precise socket preparation using a 3D-printed replica, and immediate transplanta

BACKGROUND: A traumatic injury to the primary dentition can cause damage to the germ of the permanent successor. As a clinical consequence a dilaceration with root deformation, malpositioning and disturbances of eruption can occur. Surgical repositioning of such a dislocated crown of a developing tooth can be a treatment option.
CASE REPORT: A four year old patient was referred to our clinic because of a mobile upper primary central incisor and a radiographically visible displaced dental crown. Her history revealed a traumatic dental injury one year ago. Radiologic examination confirmed an in

The orthodontic tooth movement produces physical and biochemical reactions in the periodontium. Tooth movements can be expressed by cell activation inducing bone resorption and remodelling. Substances as cAMP, cGMP, neuropeptides, prostaglandins and ormons play a basic role in this mechanism as mediators and modulators of the cellular responses. The Authors review the possibility to control the degree of the tooth movement acting on this biochemical process.

A case of trigeminal zoster in a patient with disseminated Hodgkin's disease is described. Although one case of maxillary tooth loss in a comparable patient has previously been recorded, this is the first report of mandibular tooth loss. The aetiological significance of Beomycin and I-(2-chloroethyl)-3-cyclohexyl-I-nitrosourea (C.C.N.U.) is discussed and an hypothesis for post-zoster tooth exfoliation is suggested.
