Prognostic risk factors for apical root resorption in orthodontic patients - Are the Kjær's morphologic characteristics of clinical relevance?

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing orthodontic treatment (OT) face an increased risk of developing external apical root resorption (EARR). A prognostic risk assessment prior to OT can potentially be conducted through anatomical features in panoramic radiography. This retrospective study aimed to assess the significance of Kjær's morphological characteristics in analyzing the risk of EARR. METHODS: Panoramic radiographs of 1,156 patients (624 females, 532 males) were retrospectively analyzed. Anamnestic and treatment-related data were extracted from patient records. The mean age at the start of O

Non-syndromic occurrence of true generalized microdontia with hypodontia: A case report.

RATIONAL: Dental abnormalities can occur at any stage of tooth development. Of these abnormalities, true generalized microdontia is a rare condition in which all teeth are smaller than normal, while hypodontia is defined as the absence of 1 to 5 teeth. As far as we are aware, no article has reported a case of the non-syndromic occurrence of true generalized microdontia with hypodontia. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 9-year-old girl who had no systemic diseases presented with congenital absence of maxillary lateral incisors bilaterally and small teeth involving the whole dentition. DIAGNOSES: Based on i

Allogeneic Transplantation of Periodontal Ligament-Derived Multipotent Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Sheets in Canine Critical-Size Supra-Alveolar Periodontal Defect Model.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that induces the destruction of tooth-supporting tissues, followed by tooth loss. Although several approaches have been applied to periodontal regeneration, complete periodontal regeneration has not been accomplished. Tissue engineering using a combination of cells and scaffolds is considered to be a viable alternative strategy. We have shown that autologous transplantation of periodontal ligament-derived multipotent mesenchymal stromal cell (PDL-MSC) sheets regenerates periodontal tissue in canine models. However, the indications for autologous

Intracanal bisphosphonate does not inhibit replacement resorption associated with delayed replantation of monkey incisors.

Progressive replacement resorption following delayed replantation of avulsed teeth has proved to be an intractable clinical problem. A wide variety of therapeutic approaches have failed to result in the predictable arrest of resorption, with a good long-term prognosis for tooth survival. Bisphosphonates are used in the medical management of a range of bone disorders and topically applied bisphosphonate has been reported to inhibit root resorption in dogs. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a bisphosphonate (etidronate disodium) as an intracanal medicament in the root canals of avulsed m

Immediate implant placement, reconstruction of compromised sockets, and repair of gingival recession with a triple graft from the maxillary tuberosity: a variation of the immediate dentoalveolar restoration technique.

Immediate implant placement into compromised sockets is challenging for clinicians. The 3-dimensional implant position, status of the buccal bone wall, and regeneration of the soft tissue contours all affect adequate esthetic and functional results. This clinical report presents a treatment protocol (a variation of the immediate dentoalveolar restoration concept) consisting of immediate implantation and the reconstruction of the buccal bone wall and gingival recession in a single procedure with a triple graft (cancellous and cortical bone and soft tissue graft).

5-year longitudinal study of survival rate and periodontal parameter changes at sites of maxillary canine autotransplantation.

BACKGROUND: Although dental transplantation is an accepted treatment modality, few studies have evaluated the prognosis for autotransplantation of maxillary canines, and changes in clinical periodontal parameters still need to be demonstrated. The objectives of this long-term study were to evaluate the prognosis and changes in clinical attachment level (CAL), probing depth (PD), soft tissue recession (REC), and radiographic bone level changes between years 1 and 5 for autotransplanted maxillary canines. METHODS: Thirty subjects with 32 impacted canines were scheduled for transplantation. Tran

Fibroblast growth factor-2 with beta-tricalcium phosphate for the deep and wide intrabony defect reaching the apex and Class II furcation involvement of a mandibular molar.

BACKGROUND: The basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) drug formulation, human recombinant FGF-2 and hydroxypropylcellulose, developed in Japan, has been confirmed to induce effective periodontal regeneration. However, in cases with minimal residual bone walls or vertical bone defects fused with furcation involvement, FGF-2 alone does not achieve ideal periodontal regeneration. Therefore, it is necessary to attempt to use FGF-2 in combination with bone grafting materials. Beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) has been developed as a bone graft material and has a long history of use. Its advantage

Comparative evaluation of effect of silver diamine fluoride with different anti-staining agents on shear bond strength of universal adhesive to dentin: An in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is one of the most widespread chronic diseases, impacting over 2.4 billion people globally. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a minimally invasive treatment known for its strong antimicrobial and remineralizing effects. However, the primary esthetic drawback of SDF is the black staining it causes on the treated tooth structure. To address this issue, adjunctive anti-staining agents such as potassium iodide (KI), glutathione (GSH), and tannic acid (TA) have been explored. These agents may not only mitigate discoloration but also affect the bonding efficiency of restorat
