Robotic totally endoscopic coronary artery bypass grafting (TECAB) was introduced in 1998 and has over a period of two decades gradually emerged from single-vessel revascularization to multivessel bypass grafting. Dedicated centers have continuously evolved and further developed this minimally invasive method of coronary bypass surgery. A literature review was conducted to assess intra- and postoperative outcomes of TECAB. PubMed returned 19 comprehensive articles on TECAB. Investigation was focused on perioperative outcome parameters, i.e.: operative time, conversion to larger incision, revis

OBJECTIVES: Indigenous people in Canada continue to suffer from higher rates of opioid overdose death than non-Indigenous groups. Although substance use treatment remains a key strategy in the context of the overdose crisis, the barriers to timely substance use treatment access among Indigenous people have not been well-characterized. This study aims to identify factors affecting treatment access for Indigenous residents in Vancouver, BC.
METHODS: Data was derived from three prospective cohort studies of people who use drugs in Vancouver. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to id

Despite the numerous studies over the past 30 years that have clarified the devastating effects of child maltreatment on mental and physical health, the role of trauma within the caregiving system remains unrecognized both in our diagnostic systems and in our dominant treatment paradigms. Research of people with histories of caregiver abuse and neglect consistently demonstrates problems with concentration, anger, panic, depression, food intake, drugs, and sleep, as well as decreased Heart RateVariability, higher levels of stress hormones, and reduced or impaired immune response. Their relation

BACKGROUND: Prescription drug misuse (PDM) is highly prevalent among youth in the U.S., and can have serious health consequences. Homeless youth are a particularly vulnerable population with high rates of substance use. However, PDM has not been studied in a sample comprised exclusively of homeless youth.
METHODS: A sample of 451 homeless youth recruited from drop-in centers in Los Angeles, CA, provided information on substance use, mental health, service utilization, trauma, and sexual risk behavior. Multivariable logistic regression assessed correlates of past month PDM.
RESULTS: Nearly 50

Craniofacial penetrating injuries caused by foreign bodies other than bullets or glass from traffic crashes are quite rare. Hence, there is a lack of knowledge regarding systematic management strategies or analysis of complications for craniomaxillofacial surgeons. Between 2002 and 2010, 82 patients underwent surgery for penetrating craniofacial injuries in 2 craniomaxillofacial trauma centers. Among these patients, we included patients who had retained foreign metallic bodies. Data regarding age, sex, injury materials, entrance, injured structures, operative records, and complications were re

Thrombophlebitis is an inflammatory process in the superficial veins with coexistent vein thrombosis, usually occurring in patients with specific preconditions (trauma, surgery or inactivity, signs of venous insufficiency, malignancies). The concept of thrombophlebitis has evolved over time, and also its definition has changed from thrombophlebitis to superficial vein thrombosis (SVT). SVT course is usually benign, if appropriate and prompt treatment is undertaken. Pharmacologic treatment includes anticoagulation with low‑molecular‑weight heparin, fondaparinux and, more recently, rivaroxaban.

The facial phenotype of psychogenic movement disorders has not been fully characterized. Seven tertiary-referral movement disorders centers using a standardized data collection on a computerized database performed a retrospective chart review of psychogenic movement disorders involving the face. Patients with organic forms of facial dystonia or any medical or neurological disorder known to affect facial muscles were excluded. Sixty-one patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria for psychogenic facial movement disorders (91.8% females; age: 37.0 ± 11.3 years). Phasic or tonic muscular spasms res

BACKGROUND: Management of intra-abdominal hypertension with an open abdomen and planned ventral hernia results in decreased mortality. But, delayed abdominal wall reconstruction (DAWR) is necessary. Results after DAWR demonstrate acceptable recurrence, morbidity, and mortality rates. However, little is known about quality of life (QOL) after DAWR. The purpose of this study was to analyze QOL after DAWR.
METHODS: Patients who had DAWR>15 years were identified from operative logs of a trauma center. Patients were contacted, and a QOL assessment was administered in person or via telephone. The Q

Osteochondrosis is a term used to describe a group of disorders that affect the growing skeleton. These disorders result from abnormal growth, injury, or overuse of the developing growth plate and surrounding ossification centers. The exact etiology of these disorders is unknown, but genetic causes, repetitive trauma, vascular abnormalities, mechanical factors, and hormonal imbalances may all play a role. Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease is a hip disorder that causes hip pain, an atraumatic limp, and knee pain. Osgood-Schlatter and Sinding-Larsen-Johannson diseases are common causes of anterior knee

OBJECTIVES: Biliary injuries are frequently accompanied by vascular injuries, which may worsen the bile duct injury and cause liver ischemia. We performed an analytical review with the aim of defining vasculobiliary injury and setting out the important issues in this area.
METHODS: A literature search of relevant terms was performed using OvidSP. Bibliographies of papers were also searched to obtain older literature.
RESULTS: Vasculobiliary injury was defined as: an injury to both a bile duct and a hepatic artery and/or portal vein; the bile duct injury may be caused by operative trauma, be

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk of a first venous thromboembolism (VTE), yet their risk of recurrent VTE is unknown. We performed a cohort study to determine the risk for recurrent VTE among patients with IBD compared with subjects without IBD.
METHODS: We assessed 2811 patients with IBD for a history of VTE, recruited from outpatient clinics at 14 referral centers (June 2006-December 2008). Patients with VTE before a diagnosis of IBD or those not confirmed to have VTE, cancer, or a VTE other than deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary emboli

Emotional trauma and psychological stress can precipitate cardiac arrhythmia and sudden death through arrhythmogenic effects of efferent sympathetic drive. Patients with preexisting heart disease are particularly at risk. Moreover, generation of proarrhythmic activity patterns within cerebral autonomic centers may be amplified by afferent feedback from a dysfunctional myocardium. An electrocortical potential reflecting afferent cardiac information has been described, reflecting individual differences in interoceptive sensitivity (awareness of one's own heartbeats). To inform our understanding
