BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is an optic neuropathy characterized by progressive retinal ganglion cells degeneration and associated visual field defects. Although elevated intraocular pressure is a major risk factor, glaucoma can also develop in individuals with statistically normal intraocular pressure, implying alternative mechanisms such as neurotrophins deprivation and primary lateral geniculate nucleus injury. These mechanisms may suggest a neurodegenerative aspect of the disease.
METHODS: In this study, we evaluated 15 patients with bilateral early-stage normal-tension glaucoma, 10 with bilater

UNLABELLED: Visual motion responses in the brain are shaped by two distinct sources: the physical movement of objects in the environment and motion resulting from one's own actions. The latter source, termed visual reafference, stems from movements of the head and body, and in primates from the frequent saccadic eye movements that mark natural vision. To study the relative contribution of reafferent and stimulus motion during natural vision, we measured fMRI activity in the brains of two macaques as they freely viewed >50 hours of naturalistic video footage depicting dynamic social interaction

Despite the growing recognition of the significance of cerebrovascular impairment in the etiology and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD), the early stage brain vascular dysfunction and its sensitivity to pharmacological interventions is still not fully characterized. Due to the early and aggressive treatment of probable AD with cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEI), which in and of themselves have direct effects on brain vasculature, the vast majority of hemodynamic measurements in early AD subjects reported hitherto have consequently been made only after the start of treatment, complicating t

IMPORTANCE: Schizophrenia (SZ) is characterized by deficits in visual-spatial working memory, a function dependent on a distributed cortical network that includes nodes in the primary visual (V1), posterior parietal (PPC), and dorsolateral prefrontal (DLPFC) cortices. The connections across these regions involve excitatory synapses on the dendritic spines of pyramidal neurons in layer 3 (L3).
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether SZ is associated with regional differences in the magnitude or nature of L3 spine alterations.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case-control study examined brain tiss

Working memory, the ability to maintain and transform information, is critical for cognition. Spatial working memory is particularly well studied. The premier model for spatial memory is the continuous attractor network, which posits that cells maintain constant activity over memory periods. Alternative models propose complex dynamics that result in a variety of cell activity time courses. We recorded from neurons in the frontal eye fields and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of 2 macaques during long (5-15 s) memory periods. We found that memory cells turn on early after stimulus presentation,

During postnatal life the cerebral cortex passes through critical periods of plasticity allowing its physiological adaptation to the environment. In the visual cortex, critical period onset and closure are influenced by the non-cell autonomous activity of the Otx2 homeoprotein transcription factor, which regulates the maturation of parvalbumin-expressing inhibitory interneurons (PV cells). In adult mice, the maintenance of a non-plastic adult state requires continuous Otx2 import by PV cells. An important source of extra-cortical Otx2 is the choroid plexus, which secretes Otx2 into the cerebro

PURPOSE: Phosphodiesterase 7 (PDE7) is an enzyme that selectively hydrolyses cyclic adenosine monophosphate, and its dysfunction is implicated in neuropsychiatric diseases. However, in vivo visualization of PDE7 in human brains has hitherto not been possible. Using the novel PET ligand 11C-MTP38, which we recently developed, we aimed to image and quantify PDE7 in living human brains.
METHODS: Seven healthy males underwent a 90-min PET scan after injection of 11C-MTP38. We performed arterial blood sampling and metabolite analysis of plasma in six subjects to obtain a metabolite-corrected input

The 2019 International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) Position Development Conference Task Force for monitoring with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) identified detection of atypical femur fractures (AFFs) as an important topic and established this working group to answer key questions in this area. The authors conducted a systematic review of the literature and deliberated on proposed ISCD positions, which were then reviewed by an external expert panel and vetted at the 2019 ISCD Position Development Conference in Kuala Lumpur on March 23, 2019. This paper summarizes the final

The projections from the lateral geniculate body of the rat were followed using the technique of autoradiography after injections of [3H] proline into the dorsal and/or ventral nuclei of this diencephalic structure. Autoradiographs were prepared from either frozen or paraffin coronal sections through the rat brain. The dorsal nucleus of the lateral geniculate projected via the optic radiation to area 17 of the cerebral cortex. There was also a slight extension of label into the zones of transition between areas 17, 18 and 18a. The distribution of silver grains in the various layers of the cere

Consensus opinion characterizes dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) as a progressive dementing illness, with significant fluctuations in cognition, visual hallucinations and/or parkinsonism. When parkinsonism is an early dominant feature, consensus opinion recommends that dementia within the first year is necessary for a diagnosis of DLB. If dementia occurs later, a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease with dementia (PDD) is recommended. While many previous studies have correlated the neuropathology in DLB with dementia and parkinsonism, few have analysed the relationship between fluctuating cognition

BACKGROUND: Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by developmental delay, intellectual disability, and autistic-like behaviors and is primarily caused by haploinsufficiency of SHANK3 gene. Currently, there is no specific treatment for PMS, highlighting the need for a better understanding of SHANK3 functions and the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms in the brain. We hypothesize that SHANK3 haploinsufficiency may lead to alterations in the inhibitory system, which could be linked to the excitatory/inhibitory imbalance observed in models of autism sp

Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies frequently use emotional face processing tasks to probe neural circuitry related to psychiatric disorders and treatments with an emphasis on regions within the salience network (e.g., amygdala). Findings across previous test-retest reliability studies of emotional face processing have shown high variability, potentially due to differences in data analytic approaches. The present study comprehensively examined the test-retest reliability of an emotional faces task utilizing multiple approaches to region of interest (ROI) analysis and by examining vo

INTRODUCTION: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is a chronic neuropathic pain disorder characterized by spontaneous or triggered electric shock-like facial pain. Microvascular decompression (MVD) is the most effective surgical intervention for classical TN that is refractory to medication. Recent advances in neuroimaging have enhanced visualization of the trigeminal nerve's vascular anatomy, deepening insights into TN pathophysiology and paving the way for improved diagnostics and therapies. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) has been extensively applied in studies of TN, un

Steady-state visually evoked potentials (SSVEP), owing to their high signal-to-noise ratio and low training cost, are widely regarded as an effective approach for constructing visually driven brain-computer interfaces (BCI), particularly in neurorehabilitation applications. However, the accommodation-vergence conflict (VAC) commonly present in mixed reality (MR) and virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays may attenuate neural responses in the visual cortex, thereby compromising the long-term usability of such systems. This study aims to systematically evaluate the effects of MR and VR envir

The organisation of the second visual area (V2) in marmoset monkeys was studied by means of extracellular recordings of responses to visual stimulation and examination of myelin- and cytochrome oxidase-stained sections. Area V2 forms a continuous cortical belt of variable width (1-2 mm adjacent to the foveal representation of V1, and 3-3.5 mm near the midline and on the tentorial surface) bordering V1 on the lateral, dorsal, medial, and tentorial surfaces of the occipital lobe. The total surface area of V2 is approximately 100 mm2, or about 50% of the surface area of V1 in the same individuals

Most single-unit studies of animate object processing in the primate ventral visual stream rely on passive fixation, leaving it unclear whether neuronal selectivity for socially relevant stimuli depends on behavioral context. Here, we tested whether task demands alter the selectivity of neurons in the ventral bank of the superior temporal sulcus (STS) for body pose or viewpoint. Male rhesus monkeys viewed identical body stimuli (monkey avatars) under two conditions: a task in which body pose was behaviorally relevant and a condition in which the same stimuli were irrelevant for obtaining a rew

Experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis (EAU) shows degeneration of retinal neurons, including retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), already in its early phase. Based on our previous study demonstrating the attenuation of EAU by brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), whose retinal levels were increased by visual stimulation (VS), this study evaluated the effect of VS on BDNF protein expression in brain visual centers, its retrograde transport to the retina, and RGC survival in healthy and EAU mice. 14-day VS increased BDNF expression in the superior colliculus (SC) but not in the lateral geniculate
