Mechanisms and therapeutic advances of gut metabolites in the regulation of neuroimmune inflammatory diseases.

Gut-derived metabolites function as critical signaling intermediaries that translate environmental cues into central nervous system (CNS) responses, playing an indispensable role in the pathogenesis and trajectory of neuroimmune inflammatory disorders. Key metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and bile acids, either traverse the blood-brain barrier directly or orchestrate immune modulation peripherally, thereby fine-tuning the dynamic crosstalk between systemic immunity and neural homeostasis. SCFAs exert potent anti-inflammatory effects by promoting regulatory T-cell (Treg) d

Short-Chain Fatty Acids as a Therapeutic Strategy in Parkinson's Disease: Implications for Neurodegeneration.

Neurodegeneration involves the progressive deterioration of neuronal structure and function, leading to deficits in cognition, motor skills, and other neurological processes. Parkinson's disease (PD) is notably prevalent among neurodegenerative disorders, characterized by dopaminergic neurodegeneration, protein misfolding, and an inflammatory brain environment. Despite advancements in understanding its pathophysiology, PD and other neurodegenerative conditions still lack effective disease-modifying therapies. This shortfall highlights the need for novel, multifactorial approaches to treatment.

Improving quality of strawberry by novel essential oil nanoemulsions of Echinophora platyloba combined with Aloe vera gel and gum arabic.

Strawberry fruits are highly perishable and have a limited shelf life. Therefore, effective methods such as essential oils (EOs) and edible coatings are required to mitigate spoilage and maintain fruit quality during storage. In the current study, Echinophora platyloba EO was extracted and subsequently formulated into a nanoemulsion. The strawberries were then coated using an immersion method with the prepared nanoemulsions, gum Arabic (GA), and Aloe vera gel (AV). The coating treatments included: distilled water control, 5% GA, 20% AV, 0.5% E. platyloba essential oil, 5% GA + 0.5% E. platylob

Impact of particle structure on the storage stability and release kinetics of essential oil encapsulated in shellac particle for high-barrier paper coatings for food packaging applications.

Essential oil (EO) as an active component is a novel way to ensure food safety in packaging. Nevertheless, consistently retaining EO during package storage (SR) and release kinetics (RK) poses a major challenge. In this study, isotropic shellac: EO particles monophasic, biphasic (Bf), and core-shell were fabricated by loading EO into shellac-based electrosprayed microparticles. The particles were coated on paper, and SR (14 days at 40 °C), loading efficiency (LE), and RK were found to be 77.7 %, 86.3 %, and 76.5 %, respectively. Furthermore, by storing strawberries (SB) and shrimp for 28 days,

Enhanced Biohydrogen Production through Dark Fermentation by Humic Acid: Insights into Microbial Composition and Functional Genes.

Biohydrogen production from organic waste or wastewater by eco-friendly methods has attracted attention in recent years. However, the biohydrogen yield still far below the theoretical value. In this study, humic acid (HA), a solid redox mediator (RM), was used to enhance the biohydrogen production from glucose. The internal mechanism based on microbial community and functional genes were explored. The results showed that the optimal dosages of HA were 80 and 150 mg/l with the biohydrogen yield of 312.7 and 315.5 ml/g glucose, which was higher than that in control by above 26.6%. Impact of ethanol-gasoline implementation on regulated and unregulated emissions from Euro 3-5 standard vehicles over the WLTP driving cycle.

Tailpipe emissions are the primary contributors to unhealthy air quality worldwide. However, few studies have comprehensively investigated the VOC and regulated pollutant emissions from mobile sources. To address this, three in-use vehicles representing Euro 3 to 5 standards fueled by gasoline/bioethanol blends (E3 and E10) were tested. The vehicles operate under WLTP, which is considered closer to real-world driving. When ethanol was added to gasoline, the Euro 5 vehicle, as expected, exhibited the lowest emission levels, aligning with the more restrictive Euro 5 standard. It is noteworthy th

Benzoic Acid-Mediated Oxygen Activation for Efficient Toluene Removal on the Co-Vo-Cu Catalyst via In Situ Ligand Modulation.

Carboxylates are commonly formed as intermediates during the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and are often regarded as significant barriers to the complete mineralization of organic pollutants. In this study, we present a novel cobalt-doped copper-based catalyst that employs an in situ benzoic acid-mediated oxygen activation strategy for the photocatalytic degradation of toluene under visible-light irradiation. Unlike traditional systems in which carbonyl intermediates contribute to catalyst deactivation, we demonstrate that benzoic acid, generated during toluene oxidation, acts

Temporo-spatial Variations and Sector-Specific Analysis in the Emission Control of VOC and NOx, Two Important Precursors of Ozone Pollution, in China.

China faces escalating ozone pollution challenges, with O3 becoming the primary pollutant in summer since 2013 and exhibiting deteriorating compliance rates (Grade I attainment plummeted from 6.9 to 0.3% during 2015-2023). Critical hotspots include the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region (exceeding standards by 20 µg/m3), driven by inadequate coordinated control of VOC and NOx. Analysis of the ABaCAS-EI v2.0 dataset (2005-2021) reveals divergent precursor trends: VOC emissions shifted from residential to industrial dominance, with industrial solvents (PRSO) surging 389% during 2005-2013 and comprisin

The effects of microbiota-derived short-chain fatty acids on T lymphocytes: From autoimmune diseases to cancer.

Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), acetate, propionate, and butyrate, are the microbial metabolites that have significant functions in host immune modulation, especially T lymphocyte function. Implication by recent evidence indicates SCFAs regulate T-cell growth, differentiation, metabolism, effector function, and apoptosis through histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibition, G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling, and metabolic reprogramming processes. Butyrate, for example, enhances regulatory T cell (Treg) and Interleukin 10 (IL-10)-producing T helper 1 (Th1) cell differentiation as well as co
