Applying surrogates and indicators to assess removal efficiency of trace organic chemicals during chemical oxidation of wastewaters.

To respond to concerns associated with wastewater-derived contaminants water utilities are looking for new approaches for monitoring trace organic chemicals in conventional and advanced water treatment processes. This study examines the use of a combination of surrogate parameters and indicator compounds tailored to monitor the removal efficiency of advanced oxidation processes employed by treatment plants engaged in indirect potable water reuse programs. Potential surrogate parameters and indicator compounds, identified by reviewing previous publications and classified by their structural pro

Diagenesis and bioavailability of mercury in the contaminated sediments of Ulhas Estuary, India.

Sequential extraction of Hg was performed in a core collected from intertidal area in Ulhas Estuary in order to characterize the downward distribution and diagenetic behavior of Hg in a polluted estuary. Concentration of total Hg ranged between 0.46 and 6.40 microg g(-1) with significant decrease in surficial sediment as a result of closing of two Hg-cell based chlor-alkali plants. Results of sequential extraction showed that>65% Hg was strongly bound to organo-sulphur and inorganic sulphide species that are not bioavailable. Flux of only 18.8% of Hg was found compared to its value deposited o

Modelling the long-term fate of mercury in a lowland tidal river. I. Description of two finite segment models.

Crucial determinants of the potential effects of mercury in aquatic ecosystems are the speciation, partitioning, and cycling of its various species. These processes are affected by site-specific factors, such as water chemistry, sediment transport, and hydrodynamics. This study presents two different approaches to the development of one-dimensional/dynamic-deterministic models for the evaluation and prediction of mercury contamination in a lowland tidal river, the River Yare (Norfolk, UK). The models described here were developed to encompass the entire river system and address the mass balanc

Selective chemosensor for Hg(II) ions based on tris[2-(4-phenyldiazenyl)phenylaminoethoxy]cyclotriveratrylene in aqueous samples.

A novel chemosensor, based on tris[2-(4-phenyldiazenyl)phenylaminoethoxy]cyclotriveratrylene (TPPECTV) as chromophore, has been developed for the colorimetric determination and visual detection of Hg(II) ions. TPPECTV exhibits a pronounced chromogenic behavior toward Hg(II) ions by changing the color of the solution from yellow to red-orange upon its addition, which can be easily detected with the naked-eye. Based on this sensing scheme a colorimetric method was developed, where the absorbance linearly increases as a function of the Hg(II) concentration up to 2.0x10(-4) M, with a detection lim

Use of dewatered alum sludge as a substrate in reed bed treatment systems for wastewater treatment.

In this paper, two laboratory-scale simulated reed beds were investigated for the purpose of assessing the feasibility and effectiveness of using dewatered alum sludge as a possible substrate for wastewater treatment reed bed systems. One horizontal subsurface flow setup and one vertical flow setup were used. The horizontal flow system was planted with Phragmites australis while the vertical flow system was left unplanted. Thus, the latter was more akin to a sand filter system, but was examined with the potential use as a planted vertical reed bed system. The influent source used was farmyard

Wetland influence on mercury fate and transport in a temperate forested watershed.

The transport and fate of mercury (Hg) was studied in two forest wetlands; a riparian peatland and an abandoned beaver meadow. The proportion of total mercury (THg) that was methyl mercury (% MeHg) increased from 2% to 6% from the upland inlets to the outlet of the wetlands. During the growing season, MeHg concentrations were approximately three times higher (0.27ng/L) than values during the non-growing season (0.10ng/L). Transport of Hg species was facilitated by DOC production as indicated by significant positive relations with THg and MeHg. Elevated concentrations of MeHg and % MeHg (as hig

In situ long-term reductive bioimmobilization of Cr(VI) in groundwater using hydrogen release compound.

The results of a field experiment designed to test the effectiveness of a novel approach for long-term, in situ bioimmobilization of toxic and soluble Cr(VI) in groundwater using a hydrogen release compound (HRC)--a slow release glycerol polylactate--are described. The field experiment was conducted at the Hanford Site (Washington), a U.S. Department of Energy nuclear production facility, using a combination of hydrogeological, geophysical, geochemical, and microbiological measurements and analyses of water samples and sediments. The results of this experiment show that a single HRC injection

Cyanide uptake from wastewater by modified natrolite zeolite-iron oxyhydroxide system: application of isotherm and kinetic models.

A method for the removal of cyanides from wastewater is described. The method involves the adsorption of cyanides by a modified natural zeolite (natrolite) using batch technique. A new iron oxyhydroxide-natrolite system was used in this study. A combination of XRD, XRF and FTIR spectroscopies, as well as TG/DSC thermal analyses was used for characterization of zeolitic materials. Effects of parameters such as pH, amount of adsorbent and contact time on the cyanide removing yield are studied. It was observed that the yield increases by increasing dosage of adsorbent and contact time at a fixed

Application of surfactant enhanced permanganate oxidation and bidegradation of trichloroethylene in groundwater.

The industrial solvent trichloroethylene (TCE) is among the most ubiquitous chlorinated solvents found in groundwater contamination. The main objectives of this study were to evaluate the feasibility of using non-ionic surfactant Simple Green (SG) to enhance the oxidative dechlorination of TCE by potassium permanganate (KMnO4) employing a continuous stir batch reactor system (CSBR) and column experiments. The effect of using surfactant SG to enhance the biodegradation of TCE via aerobic cometabolism was also examined. Results from CSBR experiments revealed that combination of KMnO4 with surfac

The occurrence of glyphosate, atrazine, and other pesticides in vernal pools and adjacent streams in Washington, DC, Maryland, Iowa, and Wyoming, 2005-2006.

Vernal pools are sensitive environments that provide critical habitat for many species, including amphibians. These small water bodies are not always protected by pesticide label requirements for no-spray buffer zones, and the occurrence of pesticides in them is poorly documented. In this study, we investigated the occurrence of glyphosate, its primary degradation product aminomethylphosphonic acid, and additional pesticides in vernal pools and adjacent flowing waters. Most sampling sites were chosen to be in areas where glyphosate was being used either in production agriculture or for nonindi

Removal of cadmium using MnO2 loaded D301 resin.

MnO2 loaded weak basic anion exchange resin D301 (Anion exchange resin, macroreticular weak basic styrene) as adsorbent has been prepared and applied to the removal of cadmium. The adsorption characteristics have been investigated with respect to effect of pH, equilibrium isotherms, removal kinetic data, and interference of the coexisting ions. The results indicated that the Cd2+ could be efficiently removed using MnO2 loaded D301 resin in the pH range of 3-8 from aqueous solutions with the co-existence of high concentration of alkali and alkaline-earth metals ions. Bioremediation of tetrachloroethylene-contaminated groundwater in a model aquifer: effects on green frogs (Rana clamitans) and Xenopus laevis as potential wetland receptors.

Recent regulations require that the ecological effects of microorganisms introduced into the environment, such as for groundwater bioremediation, be assessed prior to their utilization. A native anuran (Rana clamitans) and a model anuran (Xenopus laevis) were used as potential wetland receptors of tetrachloroethylene (PCE)-contaminated groundwater, undergoing three bioremediation treatments: natural attenuation (NA), biostimulation (ST), and bioaugmentation (AU). Eggs of both species were exposed acutely (96 h) to remediated effluents. Xenopus tadpoles were chronically exposed to the effluents

[Drinking water data collection and information system in North Rhine-Westphalia. Integration of water supply zones].

To comply with the drinking water regulation act of 2001 and as basis for reports to the European Community, North Rhine-Westphalia has defined water supply zones and collected the necessary data from local health authorities. The software used for drinking water surveillance by the local health authorities and on state level has been adapted to the new requirements. In principle, a supply zone in NRW means a region where the water comes from one water-works. Under certain conditions exceptions are possible. 53 out of 54 local health authorities supplied data about water supply zones up to sum

Wollastonite as reactive filter medium for sorption of wastewater ammonium and phosphorus.

The utilisation of reactive filter media to remove ammonium and phosphorus can improve the effluent water quality of wastewater treatment systems. The objective of this study was to estimate the ammonium and phosphorus sorption capacity of wollastonite, a calcium meta silicate (CaSiO3) that is distributed worldwide. Phosphorus sorption mechanisms were also investigated. Batch sorption experiments with agitating bottles were carried out and both phosphate and ammonium solutions as well as wastewater were used. The results showed minor ammonium adsorption, with only 3-15% of the ammonium in the

Kinetics of the reduction of hexavalent chromium with the brown seaweed Ecklonia biomass.

The dead biomass of the brown seaweed, Ecklonia sp., is capable of reducing toxic Cr(VI) into less toxic or nontoxic Cr(III). However, little is known about the mechanism of Cr(VI) reduction by the biomass. The objective of this work was to develop a kinetic model for Cr(VI) biosorption, for supporting our mechanism. The reduction rate of Cr(VI) increased with increasing total chromate concentration, [Cr(VI)], and equivalent concentration of organic compounds, [OCs], and decreasing solution pH. It was found that the reduction rate of Cr(VI) was proportional to [Cr(VI)] and [OCs], suggesting th

A multi-objective optimization framework for surfactant-enhanced remediation of DNAPL contaminations.

The occurrence of Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (DNAPL) contaminations in the subsurface is a threat for drinkwater resources in the western world. Surfactant-Enhanced Aquifer Remediation (SEAR) is widely considered as one of the most promising techniques to remediate DNAPL contaminations in-situ, be it with considerable additional costs compared to classical pump-and-treat remediations. A cost-effective design of the remediation set-up is therefore essential. In this work, a pilot SEAR test is executed at a DNAPL contaminated site in Belgium in order to collect data for the calibration of a

Natural analcime zeolite modified with 5-Br-PADAP for the preconcentration and anodic stripping voltammetric determination of trace amount of cadmium.

A procedure for separation and preconcentration of trace amounts of cadmium has been proposed. A column of analcime zeolite modified with benzyldimethyltetradecylammonium chloride and loaded with 2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol (5-Br-PADAP) was used for retention of cadmium. The cadmium was quantitatively retained on the column at pH approximately 9 and was recovered from column with 5 ml of 2 M nitric acid with a preconcentration factor of 140. Anodic stripping differential pulse voltammetry was used for determination of cadmium. A 0.05 ng/ml detection limit for the preconcentra

The risk of MTBE relative to other VOCs in public drinking water in California.

Ongoing publicity about methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) suggests that this chemical is of greater concern than other contaminants commonly found in drinking water. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the available MTBE data in context with other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are detected in public drinking water sources in California. We find that of the 28 VOCs with a primary maximum contaminant level (MCL) in California, 21 were found in 50 or more drinking water sources from 1985 to 2002. Over the last 10 years, the most frequently detected VOCs were chloroform, tetrachlo

Optimal methods for quenching H2O2 residuals prior to UFC testing.

In this paper, the quenching of hydrogen peroxide by catalase, sodium hypochlorite, sodium thiosulfate and sodium sulfite, prior to UFC testing, was investigated. Sodium hypochlorite, sodium thiosulfate and sodium sulfite were found to be unsuitable for quenching H2O2 residuals because the procedures are time-consuming and complicated in that they require potentially multiple measurements of the peroxide and chlorine residuals. In contrast, quenching of peroxide with catalase is a simple procedure. Catalase doses of less than 0.2 mg/L were found to have no impact on DBP (TTHM, HAA and aldehyde
