Molecular screening of Amblyomma species (Acari: Ixodidae) imported from African countries to Egypt, with the first report of Amblyomma latum from the ball python, Python regius (Squamata: Pythonidae).

Amblyomma species are non-endemic ticks in Egypt, which have been recorded from imported animals. This study was carried out in 2022 to monitor Amblyomma spp. from dromedary camels, cattle, and snakes in Egypt. During this study, 400 camels, 200 cattle, and two snakes (Pythonidae) were inspected for tick infestation. Collected specimens were identified based on morphological characters and confirmed by phylogenetic analysis of the 12S rRNA gene. Camels were infested by adult specimens of Amblyomma variegatum and Amblyomma lepidum, but no Amblyomma spp. were collected from cattle. Amblyomma var

Complementary description of three species of Steneotarsonemus (Acari: Tarsonemidae) from rice agroecosystems of Eastern India with notes on their taxonomic status, spatial distribution, intraspecific variation and species composition.

Rice agroecosystems are inhabited by a number of Steneotarsonemus species worldwide with various host plant relationships and taxonomic identities. To clarify this situation, a large-scale survey was initiated in rice growing belts of eastern India and this revealed the presence of four species of Steneotarsonemus viz. S. furcatus, S. konoi, S. spinki and S. subfurcatus. However, only S. spinki and S. subfurcatus were found infesting rice while the other species were found associated with a number of graminaceous weeds. We found three intraspecific variants within the population of S. spinki w

Vector competence of Ixodes pacificus and I. spinipalpis (Acari: Ixodidae), and reservoir competence of the dusky-footed woodrat (Neotoma fuscipes) and the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), for Borrelia bissettii.

We investigated the experimental vector competence of Ixodes pacificus Cooley and Kohls and Ixodes spinipalpis Hadwen and Nuttall, and the reservoir competence of the dusky-footed woodrat (Neotoma fuscipes Baird) and the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus [Wagner]), for Borrelia bissettii Postic, Marti Ras, Lane, Hendson, and Baranton. Both rodent species are capable reservoirs for B. bissettii; infection rates for I. pacificus or I. spinipalpis nymphs fed as larvae on infected animals ranged from 50 to 57%. Moreover, both I. pacificus and I. spinipalpis are efficient vectors of B. bissettii.

Retrospective molecular analyses of hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) from patients admitted to the Centre for Tick-Borne Diseases in Central Europe, Hungary (1999-2021), in relation to clinical symptoms.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed at investigating the diversity of pathogens in human-biting ixodid ticks, in relation to their seasonality and associated clinical symptoms. METHODS: Hard ticks, collected from humans in the course of 23 years, were identified to the species level on a morphological basis. This was followed by DNA extraction and molecular analyses. The latter served to confirm tick species, and to detect important tick-borne pathogens, in particular rickettsiae, Anaplasmataceae, borreliae, and piroplasms. RESULTS: Among 502 ticks, six species were identified, with the predominanc

Developmental stages and molecular phylogeny of Hepatozoon fitzsimonsi (Dias 1953) (Adeleorina: Hepatozoidae) in tortoises Stigmochelys pardalis (Cryptodira: Testudinidae) and ticks of the genus Amblyomma (Acari: Ixodidae) from South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Hepatozoon fitzsimonsi (Dias, 1953) is a frequently found haemogregarine of southern African tortoises. At the time of this species' reassignment from the genus Haemogregarina to Hepatozoon, developmental stages such as sporocysts and sporozoites were observed in ticks associated with H. fitzsimonsi parasitised and non-parasitised tortoises. It was thus suggested that ticks may act as the potential vectors for this parasite. However, this earlier research was unable to confirm the identity of these sporogonic stages using molecular markers. In a separate study aimed at identifying

Evaluation of the SELECT Tick Control System (TCS), a Host-Targeted Bait Box, to Reduce Exposure to Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) in a Lyme Disease Endemic Area of New Jersey.

We describe a 2-yr trial to evaluate the ability of SELECT Tick Control System (TCS) host-targeted bait boxes to reduce numbers of host-seeking Ixodes scapularis nymphs in a residential neighborhood. After four successive 9-wk deployments, nymphal and larval I. scapularis infestation prevalence and intensity were significantly reduced on target small mammals. In addition, these deployments resulted in 87.9% and 97.3% control of host-seeking nymphs in treatment sites at 1 yr and 2 yr postintervention, respectively. Installation of a protective metal cover around the SELECT TCS bait boxes elimin

Geographic variation in the distribution of hard tick relapsing fever spirochete (Borrelia miyamotoi) (Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae) genotypes in host-seeking Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) nymphs and adults in the eastern United States.

Borrelia miyamotoi Fukunaga (Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae), the etiological agent of hard tick relapsing fever, has been detected at low prevalence in Ixodes spp. (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks from the Northern Hemisphere. Genetically distinct populations of B. miyamotoi have been described across continents and among Ixodes tick species distributed within continents. Within the eastern United States, a previous study identified two B. miyamotoi genotypes infecting Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae). Here, we expand upon that work by developing a new multiplex PCR amplicon sequencing assay t

Louse Flies (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) and Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) in Sympatric Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) and European Mouflon (Ovis gmelini musimon) in Germany: A Study Based on Samples Collected by Hunters.

PURPOSE: Although usually of minor importance for their wild ungulate hosts, ticks and more recently also louse flies are receiving considerable attention, mainly because of the multitude of pathogens associated with them. Knowledge about the occurrence of these ectoparasites in wild ungulates in Germany is limited, as access to study material is often difficult. METHODS: Hunters who contributed tissue samples for a study into vector-borne infections in mouflon and roe deer were asked to also grossly examine the carcasses of these animals and collect ectoparasites, which were then identified

The Ability of the Invasive Asian Longhorned Tick Haemaphysalis longicornis (Acari: Ixodidae) to Acquire and Transmit Rickettsia rickettsii (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae), the Agent of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Under Laboratory Conditions.

The invasive Asian longhorned tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann, was first detected in the United States in 2017. It has since been found in 12 states, and there is concern that the tick's parthenogenetic ability and wide variety of host species may allow for broader dissemination. Of the tick-borne diseases endemic to the United States, Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), a rapidly progressive and potentially fatal disease caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, is the most severe. There is considerable geographical overlap between spotted fever rickettsioses cases, which include RMSF, and th

Geographic trends in acarological risk reporting for Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae)-borne infections across the eastern United States based on data submissions to the ArboNET Tick Module, 2004 to 2023.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention introduced the National Tick Surveillance Program in 2018 to better define areas of acarologic risk in response to the increasing burden of blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis, Acari: Ixodidae)-associated infections. The program coordinates surveillance efforts conducted by state and local public health programs and collates acarological data in the ArboNET Tick Module national database. Among the metrics collected, the density of infected host-seeking nymphs (DIN) is believed to be most closely correlated with the reported occurrenc

Minimal Duration of Tick Attachment Sufficient for Transmission of Infectious Rickettsia rickettsii (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae) by Its Primary Vector Dermacentor variabilis (Acari: Ixodidae): Duration of Rickettsial Reactivation in the Vector Revisited.

It has been reported that starving ticks do not transmit spotted fever group Rickettsia immediately upon attachment because pathogenic bacteria exist in a dormant, uninfectious state and require time for 'reactivation' before transmission to a susceptible host. To clarify the length of reactivation period, we exposed guinea pigs to bites of Rickettsia rickettsii-infected Dermacentor variabilis (Say) and allowed ticks to remain attached for predetermined time periods from 0 to 48 h. Following removal of attached ticks, salivary glands were immediately tested by PCR, while guinea pigs were obser

Genetic characterization of Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) in Africa reveals the presence of diverse haplotypes within a single clade: Implications for pathogens transmission and tick control in a predominantly pastoral production system.

The Asian blue tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (Canestrini, 1888) is renowned as a notorious pest of veterinary importance globally. Its recent introduction to West Africa and subsequent eastward invasion and displacement of native tick fauna in many African countries is alarming, considering the prevalent unrestricted livestock migration in these regions. This study determined the genetic diversity of R. microplus in Africa based on the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit one (cox1) gene sequences in comparison with global sequences. Phylogenetic and genetic diversity analyses
