Gastric anisakiasis suspected by point-of-care ultrasound finding in the emergency department.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of gastric anisakiasis is typically confirmed by detecting larvae during upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Therefore, it is important to raise clinical suspicion to prompt this procedure. While abdominal computed tomography is often performed for this purpose, the utility of ultrasound as a workup for gastric anisakiasis is not well established. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old male with a past medical history significant for IgA vasculitis visited the emergency department with acute onset epigastric pain. The patient had sushi containing horse mackerel, mackerel, an

Ultrasonography in infectious and neoplastic diseases of the bowel and peritoneum.

Ultrasonography is not the most cited imaging technique for the evaluation of infectious and neoplastic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and the peritoneum, but it is often the initial technique used in the initial workup for nonspecific clinical syndromes. Despite its limitations, ultrasonography's strengths enable it to provide meaningful diagnostic information. To discuss the most important ultrasonographic, clinical, and epidemiological findings for infectious disease, we follow a topographical approach: stomach (Anisakis), proximal small bowel (Giardia lamblia, Strongyloides stercor

Solitary Hepatic Eosinophilic Granuloma Accompanied by Eosinophilia Without Parasitosis: Report of a Case.

A 43-year-old Japanese woman visited for a hepatic tumor incidentally found. We suspected eosinophilic granuloma of the liver (EGL) due to visceral larva migrans (VLM). However, neither past history nor medical interview indicated a risk of parasitosis. Blood testing revealed eosinophilia, serum examination showed normal results for immunoglobulin E, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay yielded negative for Toxocara and Anisakis. Gastric and colonic endoscopy revealed normal features. Several imagings showed central necrosis of the tumor. After informed consent, laparoscopic resection was per

Intestinal anisakidosis: histopathological findings and differential diagnosis.

Anisakidosis is a human zoonotic disease caused by the ingestion of raw or undercooked or not adequately salted, pickled, or smoked fish containing larval nematodes of the Anisakis species. The incidence of this infection is higher in geographical zones with traditional consumption of raw fish. However, in the last years, prevalence raised in low risk zones due to the increase popularity of Asian cuisine. According to where the larvae settle in the gastrointestinal tract, anisakidosis may have different clinical symptoms. In particular, intestinal anisakidosis may mimic several surgical condit

Airborne seafood allergens as a cause of occupational allergy and asthma.

Occupational allergy and asthma is a serious adverse health outcome affecting seafood-processing workers. Allergic reactions are directed to two major seafood groups: fish and shellfish, with the latter group comprising crustaceans and molluscs. Several allergenic proteins have been identified in these different groups, but few have been characterised on a molecular level. Parvalbumin appears to be the major fish allergen, while tropomyosin the major crustacean allergen. Other IgE-binding proteins have also been identified in molluscs and other seafood-associated agents (e.g. Anisakis sp), alt

Endohelminths of marine, anadromous, and freshwater three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus Linnaeus, 1758 (Perciformes: Gasterosteidae) in the White Sea.

This study investigates the endohelminth parasites of three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus, across marine, anadromous, and freshwater populations in the White Sea (Russia). A total of 241 sticklebacks were collected in Velikaya Salma Strait during 2022-2024. Thirteen helminth species were identified using morphological and molecular methods. Genetic analysis confirmed the presence of Anisakis simplex sensu stricto, Hysterothylacium aduncum, Phyllodistomum folium, Brachyphallus crenatus, and Alloopistholecithum cf. salmonis. We identified variability in parasite communities between

The mitochondrial genome of the sheep roundworm Ascaris ovis (Ascaridida: Nematoda) from Southwest China.

The Ascaris roundworms (Ascaridida: Nematoda), one of the commonest soil-transmitted helminths (STHs), can cause ascariasis with significant socioeconomic and public health impact. In this study, the mitochondrial genome of Ascaris ovis, a representative of this genus from the sheep in Southwest China was determined using Illumina sequencing technology. The assembled genome was 14,205 bp in size and encoded 36 genes, including 12 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and two ribosomal RNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis showed that A. ovis grouped with the congeneric Ascaris lumbricoides o

Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil and its monoterpene constituents in treating protozoan and helminthic infections.

Australian tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) oil (TTO) and its monoterpene constituents such as terpinen-4-ol (T4O), 1,8-cineole, limonene, p-cymene, and α-terpinene have been shown to be effective in controlling a wide range of parasitic infections. The anti-parasitic effects of these compounds are mainly due to their anti-histamine and anti-acetylcholinesterase activities as well as their ability to modulate host inflammatory responses. This review attempts to summarize recent advances in the uses of TTO and its 15 major monoterpene constituents in treating parasitic infections in both human

Cross-reactivity and masqueraders in seafood reactions.

Confounding variables play a significant role in many adverse seafood reactions and a clear understanding of these factors is important in properly characterizing reactions associated with potential masqueraders and mimics. Although the medical literature is replete with reviews of seafood hypersensitivity and reports of cross-reactive and newly characterized allergens, there has not been a recent effort to provide an updated overview of the several processes that may lead clinicians to draw incorrect conclusions in evaluating reported reactions to seafood. Ranging from seafood intoxications t

Fish-borne parasitic zoonoses: status and issues.

The fish-borne parasitic zoonoses have been limited for the most part to populations living in low- and middle-income countries, but the geographical limits and populations at risk are expanding because of growing international markets, improved transportation systems, and demographic changes such as population movements. While many in developed countries will recognize meat-borne zoonoses such as trichinellosis and cysticercosis, far fewer are acquainted with the fish-borne parasitic zoonoses which are mostly helminthic diseases caused by trematodes, cestodes and nematodes. Yet these zoonoses

Larval ascaridoid nematodes in horned and musky octopus (Eledone cirrhosa and E. moschata) and longfin inshore squid (Doryteuthis pealeii): Safety and quality implications for cephalopod products sold as fresh on the Italian market.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence, infection level and distribution of ascaridoid larvae in cephalopod products sold in Italy. Data on the species most commonly commercialized as whole and fresh on the Italian market were collected. After comparing commercial and literature data, Eledone spp., comprising E. cirrhosa and E. moschata (horned octopus and musky octopus, respectively) and Doryteuthis pealeii (longfin inshore squid) were selected, as they had been rarely investigated. Overall, 75 Eledone spp. caught in the Mediterranean Sea (FAO area 37) and 70 D. pealeii from the

A scoring system approach for the parasite predictive assessment of fish lots: a proof of concept with anisakids.

A total of 982 individuals distributed in 11 lots belonging to 10 fish species from three Atlantic FAO fishing areas were sampled and examined to detect the presence of anisakid larvae in fish muscle. After hazard identification by genetic sequencing and exposure assessment by anatomic extent and demographic characterization of infection, all data were fitted for each fish species to a new proposed scoring schema of parasite prediction. In the absence of a criterion standard method for inspection and precise definition of the quantum satis for parasites in contaminated fish lots, the inspectio

[Two cases of parasitic granuloma found incidentally in surgical specimens].

Occasionally, parasitosis demonstrates no clinical symptoms, and is found incidentally. We report 2 cases of parasitic granuloma found incidentally in surgical specimens in rare sites for parasitosis. Case 1 was a 40-year-old female. She was diagnosed with inguinal hernia, and operation was performed. A white nodule, measured 1.5 x 1 x 1 cm in size, was found in the hernia sac. The nodule was elastic hard and solid. Histologically, eosinophilic granuloma was demonstrated, and the parasite was characterized by renette cell and Y-shaped lateral cord, and suggesting extra-gastrointestinal anisaki

Anisakid parasite diversity in a pygmy sperm whale, Kogia breviceps (Cetacea: Kogiidae) stranded at the edge of its distribution range in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean.

Anisakid nematodes are a globally distributed group of marine mammal parasites. Kogiid whales, including the pygmy sperm whale Kogia breviceps, host an assemblage of specific anisakid species. Currently, three species are known to be specific to kogiid hosts, i.e., Skrjabinisakis paggiae, S. brevispiculata, and the less studied Pseudoterranova ceticola. The aim of this study was to investigate the species diversity of anisakid nematodes sampled from a pygmy sperm whale stranded in 2013 at the edge of its distribution range in the Northeast Atlantic, specifically in the North of Scotland. Nemat

[Anisakiasis Induced Segmental Jejunum Obstruction].

Human anisakiasis is a disease caused by an infestation of the third stage larvae of family anisakidae. The ingested larvae invade the gastrointestinal wall, causing clinical symptoms that include abdomen pain, nausea, and vomiting. Although enteric anisakiasis is extremely rare, it can induce intestinal obstruction. We report a case in which emergency surgery was needed due to intestinal obstruction that coincided with symptoms related to anisakiasis, along with a brief literature review.
