BACKGROUND: The aggressive biological behavior of odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs), unlike that of other odontogenic cysts, has argued for its recent re-classification as a neoplasm, 'keratocystic odontogenic tumor'. Identification of mutations in the PTCH gene in some of the OKCs that were expected to produce truncated proteins, resulting in loss of control of the cell cycle, provided additional support for OKCs having a neoplastic nature.
METHODS: We investigated the immunohistochemical expression of the sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathway-related proteins, PTCH, smoothened (SMO) and GLI-1

Immunocytochemical studies of the expression of PCNA, Ki67 and p53 protein have been done by different groups on sporadic keratocysts (OKCs) and OKCs associated with the naevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS). These 'markers' have in common that they are all expressed in actively proliferating cells, particularly in neoplasms. The findings were compared with their expression in dentigerous and radicular cysts. While there was some variability in the reported results, probably because of technical inconsistencies and the use of different antibodies, a definite trend emerged. In general P

PURPOSE: To determine the biological behaviour of common odontogenic cystic lesions by analysing and comparing bcl-2 expression amongst them.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study covered 90 formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissue samples: 26 primary cases each of radicular cysts (RC), dentigerous cysts (DC) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKC) and 12 of recurrent OKCs. Bcl-2 expression was analysed immunohistochemically and data analysis was accomplished using SPSS version 17.0. Means were taken for age while for gender and site of the lesions frequencies and percentages were determined. The Chi-squ

Glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans were analysed in keratinizing and nonkeratinizing odontogenic cyst fluids. Hyaluronic acid showed the highest incidence and abundance amongst the glycosaminoglycans detected. Appreciable amounts of chondroitin-4-sulphate were also observed, particularly in the dental cysts, with lesser amounts of the other glycosaminoglycans. Heparan sulphate showed a higher incidence and abundance in the keratocyst than the other cysts, whilst chondroitin-6-sulphate could not be detected in any of the cysts. A considerable proportion of the glycosaminoglycans of the fluids

Five intraoral presentations of actinomycetes are recorded, in three of which the infection was almost certainly specifically due to the microorganisms. The importance of careful histopathologic examination is underlined, and the failure in some cases to investigate apparently simple infections bacteriologically is highlighted.

The presence of mesiodens often results in complications including retention of primary teeth and delayed eruption of permanent teeth, closure of eruption path, rotations, retention, root resorption, pulp necrosis, and diastema as well as nasal eruption and formation of dentigerous and primordial cysts. Less common complications involving the permanent incisors include dilaceration of the developing roots and loss of tooth vitality. Therefore, early diagnosis of mesiodens has particular importance in terms of preventing such complications. However, with respect to surgical removal of mesiodens

A comparison is made between the resorption of bone and the resorption of the mineralized tissues of teeth. The structure and function of osteoclasts are described well as the factors that regulate their activity. The cells resorbing the dental mineralized tissues are of the same cell type as osteoclasts. The dental tissues are covered by cementoblasts or odontoblasts which differ from the osteoblasts in that they do not respond to hormones and cytokines that stimulate bone resorption. Root resorption therefore seem to require damage of the cementoblastic layer in combination with necrosis or

The development of radiological changes in two patients with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) Type I H/S is described. Radiological findings reveal enlargement of the sella in one patient, impression of the basilar skull in the other patient. Sclerosis and thickening of the base of skull was observed in both patients. The mandibular necks were short with striking flattening of the superior surfaces of the condyles, when the patients reached adult age. At the age of 12, hypertelorism and spaced teeth were already present in both patients. In addition, they showed early costal, clavicular and scapula

Four patients affected with the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome and recurrent seizures are described and the pertinent literature is reviewed. Three of the patients had multiple basal cell carcinomas and cutaneous nevi, dentigerous cysts, and skeletal anomalies characteristic of the syndrome. The seizures had their onset in childhood and were generalized tonic-clonic in three patients and both tonic-clonic and complex partial in the fourth. Focal neurological deficits were found in only one patient. Pneumoencephalography in two patients and head CT scan in a third were negative. Electroen

Eruption cysts are benign cysts that appear on the mucosa of a tooth shortly before its eruption. The majority disappear on their own. If they hurt, bleed or are infected they may require surgical treatment to expose the tooth and drain the content. Here we present a clinical case of a six-year-old child with an eruption cyst on the permanent maxillary central left incisor, which was handled using treatment with an Er,Cr-YSGG laser. It did not require suture, there was no haemorrhage, swelling, infection or postoperative pain. The treatment of eruption cysts with this technique facilitates obt

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study aims to evaluate the relative representation of individual types of developmental odontogenic cysts (DOCs), especially from the perspective of syndromic and non-syndromic multiple DOCs in the Czech population. In addition, we also summarize the previous studies on the occurrence of multiple DOCs and provide a literature review of case reports and case series on non-syndromic multiple DOCs, particularly dentigerous cysts (DCs) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs).
METHODS: The study included histologically confirmed DOCs retrieved between January 1, 2012, and

BACKGROUND: Despite the comprehensive classifications provided by the WHO, the most common lesions include radicular cysts, dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, ameloblastomas, and odontomas. The piezoelectric technique has shown effectiveness in removing intraosseous pathologies by relying on ultrasonic microvibrations, which help preserve soft and vascular tissues. Precision in manipulating intraosseous pathology can impact the prognosis and improve the surgical procedure by controlling hemorrhage and promoting microscopic benefits. While previous research has compared the advantages

PURPOSE: Pathologic fracture of the mandible after removal of a lesion historically has been a clinical problem. The present study aimed to evaluate mandibular strength after removal of a lesion and to illustrate the theoretical efficacy of preventive measures against pathologic fracture based on a 3-dimensional finite element (FE) analysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A computed tomographic (CT)-based FE model of the mandible of a patient with a dentigerous cyst including a third molar was constructed. Using this model, the decrease of mandibular strength after virtual removal of the lesion was a

INTRODUCTION: Cystic and pseudocystic masses of the equine maxilla and mandible are rare lesions that result in clinically significant morbidity and/or mortality for the patient. Previous literature consists of case reports or case series. Few studies have addressed the variety of cystic lesions and comparative features. The aim of this study was to retrospectively describe the clinical signs, imaging findings, histopathologic diagnoses, treatments, and clinical outcomes for cystic masses in the equine maxilla and mandible.
METHODS: Cases were recruited from six sources including a pathology

BACKGROUND: Dentigerous cysts are among the most common benign lesions encountered in oral and maxillofacial surgery. While these cysts typically develop in association with impacted mandibular third molars, their occurrence in relation to mandibular first molars represents an exceptionally rare clinical entity. This study aims to systematically describe the surgical management, standardized postoperative care protocols, and long-term follow-up strategies for this rare presentation.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old female patient presented to our institution with a 12-month history of persist
